8/20/17 | Last season the Rangers had a group of four alternate captains including Marc Staal, Rick Nash, Derek Stepan and Dan Girardi.
After moving Stepan and Girardi the Rangers could have two potential openings for players to wear letters on the front of their jerseys.
Since Ryan McDonagh became captain in 2014-15, the Rangers alternate captains have been:
- 14-15: Stepan, Marty St. Louis, Staal and Girardi
- 15-16: Stepan, Staal and Girardi
- 16-17: Stepan, Staal, Girardi and Rick Nash
Alain Vigneault told Dan Rosen of NHL.com that he and his staff will see who wants to do more on the ice and off the ice, "who wants to expand his role as far as leadership and example and influence?" (NHL.com)
Adam Rotter: The choice to replace Derek Stepan's "A" is as easy: Mats Zuccarello. Zuccarello is the heart and soul of this team, plays way bigger than his size and is also, at this point, one of the longest tenured Rangers. He is very deserving of having a letter on his jersey.
As for Girardi's "A", I wonder if the Rangers will do what they did after Marty St. Louis retired and hold it vacant for a time before eventually naming someone to that spot. They don't need to replace either Girardi or Stepan's "A" but Zuccarello is a very good option up front. Options for Girardi's "A" would probably start with Kevin Shattenkirk or maybe Brady Skjei, though that is something that will likely work itself out.
