Rangers left wing Chris Kreider was fined $5,000 for elbowing Vancouver's Elias Pettersson during Wednesday's game, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced Thursday. The fine is the maximum allowable under the collective bargaining agreement.
Kreider smashed Pettersson in the face with a spinning elbow at 4:18 of the second period. He was assessed a major penalty and a game misconduct.

Pettersson is the favorite for the Calder Trophy, given to the player voted Rookie of the Year, with 58 points in 59 games.
Kreider is second on the Rangers with 49 points and is one of two players to have played in all 70 games this season, though he has no goals and two assists in his last eight appearances.
The Rangers, who have lost eight of their last nine games, continue their four-game road trip Friday night in Calgary.
