6:09PM: Alain Vigneault said on Thursday:
- On claiming Cody McLeod, "as you know, our depth has been tested lately. He brings a dimension that is different from what we have. In talking with Gorts yesterday, he felt that it was a possibility and we talked again this morning and decided to make the call."
- On his game, "I remember last year when we were in Colorado he stood in front of my bench he said, hey coach are you looking for a tough fourth liner. Took me a year to sort it out, everything I know about him, he's got a role and an identity and good team player and considering our depth situation right now it was the right thing to do."
12:05PM: The Rangers have announced that they have claimed Cody McLeod off waivers from the Predators.
McLeod, 33, has been a healthy scratch for Nashville since 1/2 and has only played 6 games since 11/22.
On the season, McLeod has one goal and one assist with 72 penalty minutes in 23 games.
He has had 6 fights this season.
Adam Rotter: I'm not entirely sure why the Rangers picked up McLeod but it's their second waiver claim of the season where they have tried to add some toughness and grit. While McLeod doesn't exactly fit with the Rangers style of play, he fills the role that Tanner Glass had. If McLeod is going to play he has to be able to take a regular shift and create energy when he is out there. He does nothing for the Rangers if he is just going to play 6 minutes a night and force the Rangers to mostly go with 11 forwards in a game. At worst, McLeod could be sent to Hartford and play bodyguard to some degree for Filip Chytil and Lias Andersson but, for right now, it seems like he was picked up to play with the Rangers.
He is in the last year of his contract and has a cap hit of $1.3 million.
