Jeff Gorton said recently that the Rangers plan to start Filip Chytil, Lias Andersson and Brett Howden at their natural position of center. (NY Post)
Gorton said that the trio will be evaluated as they go but there are no plans to move any of them to the wing, adding "we think of them as centers." (NY Post)
Gorton added that neither Mika Zibanejad or Kevin Hayes are likely to move to the wing, adding that there is mutual interest in Hayes staying with the Rangers long-term. (NY Post)
Boo Nieves, Peter Holland, Ryan Spooner and Vlad Namestnikov are all possible centers for the Rangers as well.
Adam Rotter: Hayes was the obvious one to move to wing because of the uncertainty about his future as well as his success in college on the wing. If the Rangers aren't going to move Hayes to the wing then he and Zibanejad will likely be the top two-centers and the group of Andersson, Chytil, Howden, Nieves and Holland will likely battle for the final two spots. Spooner and Namestnikov will probably be in the mix, but their versatility and ability to play on the wing is a big part of their appeal. Ultimately there aren't enough spots and at least one of the young prospects will be playing center in Hartford. Starting in Hartford for one or two of the young players wouldn't be the worst thing, but it's up to many different people in the organization to make sure that when everyone slots in they are in the best position for their development.
