Rangers defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk will be out two to four weeks after separating his shoulder during Monday's loss to the Lightning, the team announced.
The 29-year-old Shattenkirk suffered the injury after a hard hit from former Rangers teammate J.T. Miller during the second period.
Shattenkirk has struggled in the second year of his four-year contract with New York, failing to emerge as a dependable offensive blueliner. He has tallied just one goal and seven assists in 29 games this season.
The Rangers could choose to call up Ryan Lindgren or Libor Hajek from AHL Hartford, but it's more likely that Brendan Smith will return to the ice after being a healthy scratch the last two games.
Shattenkirk had his debut Rangers season cut short last January with a knee injury that required surgery.
