Proteau says that the Rangers seem to be a better fit for Gretzky than just about any other NHL destination.
He says that while Gretzky has never been an NHL GM, he was the director for Team Canada in 2002 and won Gold.
Proteau adds that being in charge of the Rangers would present Gretzky with something he didn't have when he was coach of the Coyotes which is an unlimited checkbook to spend on players.
Adam Rotter: The Rangers, the Leafs and the Kings are the teams most often linked with Gretzky. He did some stuff with the NHL and the Kings around the Dodger Stadium game and he continues to make his home in Southern California. Every few months there are rumblings about Gretzky and the Maple Leafs and some sort of big role there. If Gretzky were to return to the Rangers I think it would be in some sort of role as President or as an ambassador. I think Jeff Gorton is the next GM of the Rangers but if Gretzky wants to return to the Rangers in some capacity the team can make it work.
