Staple writes that the Rangers are looking for a defenseman in return for Del Zotto, something that the Islanders don't have, and wonders if the Ranger would take one of the Islanders forwards and try to find a defenseman somewhere else.
From an Islanders perspective, Staple writes that Del Zotto would fit in with his old junior hockey teammate John Tavares and help the Islanders run the puck possession system that they want.
The last trade between the Islanders and Rangers occurred on May 25, 2010 when the Islanders sent defensemen Jyri Niemi to the Rangers for a sixth round pick.
Prior to that trade the Islanders and Rangers had not made a trade since 1972.

Adam Rotter: I don't see the fit with the Islanders, nor do I think that Glen Sather would want to trade Del Zotto to a place where he would have to see him so often. Unless the Islanders were willing to trade one of their higher-end prospects, very unlikely, I don't think there is much of a package that they could put together to entice the Rangers to send Del Zotto to the Islanders.
