Dreger said, "It's a little far-fetched. The inexperience of Wayne Gretzky puts you in a state of disbelief that he would be seriously considered by the NY Rangers but there is that historical component that needs to be attached. He retired from the NHL as a Ranger. There is a long standing connection to Glen Sather."
Dreger said that he reached out to Gretzky twice about joining the Rangers, "All I know is what Wayne Gretzky himself told me last week when the rumblings started, first I added if I should put him on a candidate list and he said "no, I don't think so." A day or two later I circled back because the rumor was starting to spin, and I asked if coaching the New York Rangers was out of the question and he said highly, highly unlikely."
