With a win tonight the Rangers can clinch a spot in the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Rangers need two points either gained or not gained by the Islanders to clinch a playoff spot.

The Rangers are on the verge of clinching a playoff spot for the 7th straight season and for the 11th time in the past 12 seasons.

The only season the Rangers didn't make the playoffs, 2009-10, they finished one point out after losing in a shootout on the last day of the season.

Alain Vigneault met with the media after last night's win over LA and said (NYR):

  • On Raanta, "he no doubt made all the timely saves tonight. We had a few turnovers and they got some Grade A looks and he made the saves. The difference is obviously from that end and we are able to score a timely PP goal. We needed to work on our PK, Kreids took a few penalties 200ft from our net and we worked on our PK."
  • On the playoff style of the game, "there were some areas of our game that I liked and some areas where we need to be better. We knew that type of game, heavy forechecking and puck possession game that they play. In the first half of the game we did alright and in the second half it slipped a bit but that was when our goalie came in and our PP got us a timely goal."

Vigneault said the decision to start Lundqvist tomorrow was made after chatting with goalie coach Benoit Allaire, who felt that Sunday's 6PM start would be a "better fit."

Starting with tomorrow's game it is likely that Lundqvist will play in at least 5 straight games (ANA, SJ, PIT, PHI, WSH) before the Rangers end the season with a back to back in Ottawa and then at home against Pittsburgh.

In the 14 starts before his injury Lundqvist was 9-4-1 with a save percentage of .931.

3/20/17 | 4:06PM: Alain Vigneault said today:

  • On Hank, "I know he has been following the medical protocol and going through the different stages with Benny on the ice. Talked to him briefly before practice and said he was feeling much better, he looked alright and did most of the practice today and will skate again tomorrow and go from there."
  • More on Hank, "I think the logical thing to say is that we are on the same protocol before and that I would expect him at some point on the California trip."

3:05PM: Lundqvist spoke today and said (NYR):

  • "I felt pretty good. The toughest part for me is being patient and not trying to do too much. We have a plan and trying to stick to that. The last couple of days have been really good, I think, on the ice and now it's about getting my speed and timing back. I can feel that I have been away for a little bit but a couple of good days of practice and get back to it."

Larry Brooks writes that the Rangers best lineup is one that includes JT Miller playing on the third line with Kevin Hayes and Michael Grabner. (NY Post)

Brooks writes that Alain Vigneault needs to have confidence in Jimmy Vesey and boost him back into the top-six which can allow Miller to slide down to the third line. (NY Post)

Miller has skated with Rick Nash in the past few games and while Brooks says that Miller and Nash play well together and are the team's "two best forwards by a considerable margin," taking Miller away from Hayes hurts the Rangers chemistry and "dilutes" their depth. (NY Post)

Brooks writes that the Rangers need to rely on their depth to win and that they are a much deeper team with Vesey in the top-six and Miller playing with Hayes. (NY Post)

He played 21:06 and told Brooks that he didn't know he was playing on the right side until he saw it on the board. He said that Vigneault didn't give him a reason for the switch and that he just "went out and played." (NY Post)

Alain Vigneault met with the media on MSG following the Rangers win over Minnesota and said:

  • On the game, "there is no doubt that we played a good game in a real tough building. We got in late last night and I thought that it was a real gutsy performance by our group here. They started real hard and we were able to get by that first hard wave but after that we played solid both offensively and defensively and we had some good looks and when we had breakdowns Antti made some good saves."
  • On battle level, "to come into play this team, you just look at their lineup and to get two points you need a solid effort from the whole group. We got that tonight, our kids line was real good and got us that big goal in the second period and we did what we had to do to get the two points."
  • On the line switch, "it happened early on, we took those penalties and I wanted to get Nasher and Step back together on one of the units and by doing that, we killed the second penalty and we had a faceoff in their end, Step was a little tired and I put Mika out there and they scored. I just figured that I would go with that. (Laugh) Wasn't a lot of thinking on that one."
