3/15/17 | 2:41PM: Two sources tell Newsday that this is close to being finalized and that the Ragners and Sabres will play at Citi Field on 1/1/18 in the Winter Classic. (Newsday)
2/27/17 | 5:30PM: Could the Rangers be in the Winter Classic at Citi Field next year?
EJ Hradek of the NHL Network said on Don La Greca's podcast that he is hearing the Winter Classic next year will be played at Citi Field and that it will likely include the Rangers and possibly the Buffalo Sabres.
Hradek said that he wasn't reporting this as hard news but that he was hearing it would be Citi Field as the venue, feature the Rangers and possibly Buffalo as part of it being the 10th Anniversary of the first Winter Classic.
The Rangers would need to be the road team in the game due to Madison Square Garden having a tax exemption. (NY Times)
The Rangers previously played in the 2012 Winter Classic in Philadelphia and in two Stadium Series games at Yankee Stadium in 2014, one against the Devils and one against the Islanders.
Adam Rotter: The hard part about doing the Winter Classic in New York is that the Rangers can't technically be the hosts. The Yankee Stadium games worked because they were all local matchups and because they weren't the signature Winter Classic. I've always found it hard to see the NHL just doing a Rangers outdoor game at Citi Field and not involving the Islanders. If this comes to pass and it's Rangers/Sabres or something for the Winter Classic, I would expect a Stadium Series game to be held a few days later, that would involve the Islanders.
