7/3/17 | "Playing with Ryan McDonagh" was a main reason that Kevin Shattenkirk mentioned multiple times on his conference call and in TV interviews on Saturday as a main reason why he signed with the Rangers.
Shattenkirk said that McDonagh is an "elite defenseman" and plays that a style that will mesh well with how he plays.
He said that McDonagh's skating ability should "drive" his game and that his goal is to "come in here and be a phenomenal defenseman for this team and I think Ryan McDonagh will help me achieve that."
Shattenkirk said later, "term and money are big but the opportunity to play with a World Class defenseman like Ryan McDonagh and the opportunity to play at MSG, live in NYC, and obviously play for a team that I think is very close to winning a Stanley Cup. Those are factors that ultimately won out in the end."
McDonagh and Shattenkirk have been teammates many times before with Team USA, at the 2014 Olympics, 2007 Under 18s, 2009 World Juniors and 2011 World Championships.
Prior to the 2007 draft, 2007 Under 18 coach Ron Rolston said of Shattenkirk, "in terms of offensive upside and ability to change the game and be a big influence offensively, Kevin Shattenkirk, with his vision, is probably the cream of the crop."
Rolston said of McDonagh, "what I enjoyed about him was his competitive nature, and he was extremely tough to play against in the defensive end."
