Pavel Buchnevich scored the winning goal for the Rangers last night off of an attempted cross-ice pass that Kris Letang deflected into the net.
Letang said after the game that he was playing the pass with Brendan Smith streaking to the far post behind and that the puck could have gone either way but that it deflected and went "right top shelf." (The Athletic)
Ondrej Pavelec, who made 41 saves, noted that the Penguins hit four posts last night and that "you don't see that much often."
In assessing the game, Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said that his team hit the post four times and were the better team in the third period. (The Athletic)
Letang added that the Rangers got two goals off of Penguin sticks and that "it's just one of those nights that went their way and could have gone the other way too." (The Athletic)
Alain Vigneault said that the Rangers did what they needed to do to win the game.
Adam Rotter: The bounces certainly helped last night as did the posts, though I think the Rangers would have challenged that potential Malking tying goal for goalie interference, but all in all the Rangers did enough to pick up the two points. I don't think either team played their best brand of hockey but the Rangers converted on a couple of more opportunities and picked up a big road victory. This was a game that could have and maybe should have turned ugly in the second period but the Rangers managed to end the period with the lead and then found a way to get it back after the Pens tied it. It's a good win for the Rangers but not their best performance and they can't count on finding a way with some breaks in games against good teams.
