On the first day of training camp, Alain Vigneault said that he spoke with Henrik Lundqvist and Rangers goalie coach Benoit Allaire about consistency.
Vigneault said that last season the Rangers got a "tremendous" amount of "A" games last season but the Rangers need "a bit more consistency."
He added, "in my mind he is still an elite, top-five goalie."
Last season, by month, Lundqvist was:
- October: 4-3-0, .901 save percentage, 2.45 GAA
- November: 7-3-1, .925 save percentage, 2.37 GAA
- December: 5-2-0, .915 save percentage, 2.56 GAA
- January: 5-5-0, .879 save percentage, 3.61 GAA
- February: 7-3-1, .928 save percentage, 2.32 GAA
- March: 2-2-2, .907 save percentage, 3.29 GAA
- April: 1-2-0, .901 save percentage, 2.69 GAA
- Playoffs: 6-6-0, .927 save percentage, 2.25 GAA
Jeff Gorton said at the start of training camp, "I still think that Henrik is one of the top goalies in the league, I think his teammates and coaches think that way. We haven't seen anything to tell us different. Henrik is a great goalie, a real driven player, motivated and I think he will have a great season."
Lundqvist said that staying consistent means focusing on the "here and now" and that last season featured "lots of good moments" but also "stretches where I had to be better." (NYR)
He said that he was happy with the amount of work he got in the preseason and likes that the Rangers have not come out and set a limit on how many game he will play.
Adam Rotter: There has been a lot written and said about Lundqvist heading into the season after his career low .910 save percentage last year. There is no doubt that the regular season was trying at times for Lundqvist but that he was strong at times, was excellent against Montreal and then helped Sweden win Gold.
Last year was some version of what the new normal will be for Lundqvist. He will still mostly be really good but also probably have 1-2 stretches where he struggles and it looks over for him. Ultimately, he should end up around 30 wins again, the Rangers will be in the playoffs and the Rangers will make another run at the Cup with Henrik in goal.
