Henrik Lundqvist said after the loss to the Pens that Rangers have been dealing with this issues for the last month or so and that their battle level hasn't been high enough.
He said that he thought the Rangers had a better battle level against the Pens than the Islanders but that it needs to be "extremely high every night."
Lundqvist said that the Rangers keep talking about what they need to do but that there has been enough talk and they "just need to do it."
Alain Vigneault said that the Rangers "definitely need to play better, there is no doubt."
He said that they need to sustain how they played in the first period against the Penguins, where they had good energy and some offensive looks.
Vigneault added,"I liked our first period, there is no doubt after that we couldn't sustain it. I will put my focus on trying to be able to sustain that for 60 minutes."
The Rangers, according to Sports Club Stats, only have a 54.4% chance of making the playoffs.
Adam Rotter: There is a high level of concern around the Rangers right now for multiple reasons. Injuries are certainly part but even when the Rangers were healthy they were struggling to defend, struggling to limit shots against and struggling in nearly every area but goaltending. This is a team full of players not playing up to their potential and whether that is Alain Vigneault's fault or something else, the Rangers will not go anywhere until top players start performing like they should. There are so many lapses in coverage, so many turnovers and ineffectiveness with the puck that it's hard to see this getting fixed overnight. It was a process the first time for the Rangers to dig out and if they are going to do it again it will happen over time, though time now is getting shorter and with the deadline on the horizon, the Rangers will have to make a decision which way they want to go.
