On November 10, 2013, the Mayor of Montreal, Denis Coderre, sent out a tweet in French that translated to sending David Desharnais to Hamilton of the AHL.
At that, Deharnais had 1 assist in the first 17 games of the season.
Max Pacioretty said that he was "very, very upset" about the comments from the Mayor, adding that Desharnais is a great person, hard worker and great teammate. (SI)
Habs coach Michel Therrien said that it was an inappropriate comment for the Mayor to make. (SI)
The Mayor defended his comments by saying that he is a long-time fan of the Habs and "I have the right to express my opinion and I've always done it. Good thing I wasn't mayor when the Kostitsyn brothers were here!" (Edmonton Sun)
Following that tweet Desharnais had 16 goals and 35 assists in 62 games en route to helping Montreal to the Eastern Conference Final...where they would lose in six games to the Rangers.
Desharnais said in January of 2014 that it was a tough situation to be "embarrassed by the Mayor" but that it helped him build character. (The Hockey News)
Before the start of the next season, former Ranger Brandon Prust connected the two on twitter to make up. (Gazette)
