The Rangers bought out Dan Girardi's contract last year during the buyout period and will carry a cap charge of $3.6 million for this season and next season and then a cap hit of $1.1 million from the 2020-21 season through 22-23. (Cap Friendly)
The Rangers are expected to have more than $20 million in cap space this summer.
The Rangers slated to be UFA's on July 1 include Paul Carey, Cody McLeod, Ryan Sproul
The Rangers slated to be RFAs on July 1 include Ryan Spooner, Kevin Hayes, Jimmy Vesey, Vlad Namestnikov, Rob O'Gara, John Gilmour and Brady Skjei.
Adam Rotter: With the cap space the Rangers have, and with the cap going up, there isn't a huge need for the Rangers to buy anyone out. The only player I thought could be bought out would be Brendan Smith because the cap charge is only really a problem in 2020-21 when it's $3.26 million. The average cost against the cap for the Rangers to buy out Smith would be $1.26 million, which is not a ton, but the Rangers probably feel better, if they want to move him, about retaining salary for the remaining three-years than taking on any cap charge for six years. Marc Staal is always brought up, and he would have a similar kind of cap charge as Girardi does, but it seems as if he will be sticking around as one of the veteran leaders and as a mentor for the young defnsemen.
