9/17/17 - Alain Vigneault said on Saturday that he and Ryan McDonagh have discussed but have not yet decided on whether they will go back to four alternate captains.
Currently Rick Nash and Marc Staal are alternate captains but last season the Rangers also had Derek Stepan and Dan Girardi as alternate captains.
Vigneault said that he and McDonagh have talked about letting training camp and the preseason play out before they decide which route to take.
He added, "it's something that Ryan and I have discussed. I want to get Ryan's feedback and what he feels will be best for the team and go from there."
The Rangers and Vigneault have talked about leadership a lot at the start of training camp.
Adam Rotter: The idea at times has been to have two forwards with an "A" and two defensemen with an "A." The replacement for Stepan would be easy: Mats Zuccarello. The replacement for Girardi on defense is not as obvious. Kevin Shattenkirk, as a veteran and a player brought in to be in the core, would be a likely choice but, to me, there is no obvious candidate like they have up front.
