Adam Rotter: Since the Rangers last played on 5/9 they have moved on from two of their longest tenured players, added a lifelong Ranger fan on a great deal, made not one, but TWO picks in the first round of the draft, lost a player to Las Vegas, invested in a new number one center and admitted that they are trying to retool the team on the fly.
They enter training camp with questions about center depth and who will fill out the bottom pair on defense. They have options internally at center for the fourth line and on defense there is a log-jam of players who seem like they could be ready, but Nick Holden likely has a lock on that spot unless there are injuries or someone forces their way onto the team.
There are other questions regarding whether Mika Zibanejad can step into a bigger role as a number one center, if Pavel Buchnevich and Jimmy Vesey can take the next steps and where certain players may fit best. Some people are wondering about the goaltending but until Benoit Allaire fails, I will believe he can work with Ondrej Pavelec to be a reliable back up goalie. As for the starting goalie, I still have tremendous confidence in Henrik Lundqvist being able to lead the Rangers to the playoffs. Will some version of his struggles last year return? Probably, but a hopefully more mobile defense will get the puck out of the zone and limit opportunities against. Henrik will have a down streak and drop a few games in a row but he always finds a way to right the ship and correct things. He's still the Rangers most important player and will be the one of the key players who help carry them into the playoffs again.
