Larry Brooks writes in the NY Post that for the first time since 2005-06, the Rangers may enter and play a season without a captain.
The Rangers have been without a captain since Ryan McDonagh was traded last year at the deadline.
Brooks notes that players like Mats Zuccarello, Chris Kreider, Kevin Shattenkirk, Marc Staal and Jesper Fast could be options but he notes that none may be with the Rangers past their current contracts. (NY Post)
In 2005-06 the Rangers used Jaromir Jagr, Steve Rucchin and Darius Kasparaitis as alternate captains.
At the end of last season the Rangers had Marc Staal, Mats Zuccarello keep their "A"s and rotated the third one between Chris Kreider, Jesper Fast, and Mika Zibanejad.
Adam Rotter: Henrik Lundqvist is the leader of the Rangers and the one that sets the tone with his work ethic, practice habits and play. He won't get the "C" though and there is really no obvious choice to replace Ryan McDonagh. There are choices, like the players listed above, but I think the Rangers want the next person to wear the "C" to be someone they intend to have around for a long-time. At this point they don't really know who will be with the team in the long-term, let alone past the trade deadline and draft next July. If Lias Andersson develops into the player the Rangers think, and hope he can be, he will likely be the next captain, but that may not be for another year or two at the earliest. I'm guessing that the Rangers go with Zuccarello, Kreider and Staal as players that will wear an "A" with Jesper Fast definitely in the mix after being awarded the Players' Player Award the last three years.
