This season for the Rangers, Marc Staal has 1 goal, 5 assists, a plus 8 rating and an average ice time of 18:03.
17:59 is the lowest average ice time of Staal's career, down from 19:11 last season.
Staal said that he came to training camp wanting to show that he was still a good player and can play at a "high level consistently." (The Athletic)
Asked about Staal after the Rangers win over the Capitals recently, Alain Vigneault said "Marc's been playing some good hockey for us. Again tonight against a real skilled team he was able to not only give us his consistent defensive game, but with the puck he's been making some good outlet passes." (NYR Game Notes)
Prior to the game against the Red Wings, Vigneault said that Staal has been one of the Rangers most "consistent defensemen" this season and been more effective with the puck.
Vigneault said that Staal has worked on the areas of his game that the two talked about after last season and that his improvements with the puck have been a big bonus for us.
Lindy Ruff said that Staal has been one of the Rangers leading penalty killers and that Staal has had no issues keeping up with the pace and speed of the game. (The Athletic)
When Staal is on the ice at 5 on 5, the Rangers have been generating 46% of the shot attempts, 47% of the shots on goal but 54% of the goals scored. (Natural Stat Trick)
Staal will have three years remaining on his contract after this season, with a full no-move clause and a cap hit of $5.7 million.
Adam Rotter: Staal will never be the player he was on pace to being before his concussion in 2011. At the time he looked like he was going to be the star on defense for the Rangers but concussions, injuries and that eye injury prevented it from happening. It's hard to think that Staal will ever be able to live up to his cap hit but he's had a pretty good year for the Rangers and effective in a different role. I don't know what Staal's future with the team will be beyond this season, but I think he's behind Brendan Smith in terms of contracts for defensemen they may want to move on from.
