The Devils have activated Taylor Hall from the IR, while Reid Boucher has been placed on waivers, the team announced Thursday evening

Hall suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee on Nov. 12, and had surgery to repair the injury two days later. While it was estimated he would be out for three-to-four weeks, Hall will return only 17 days after he underwent surgery. The Devils went 2-4-2 during Hall's absence.

In 14 games this season, Hall has five goals and seven assists.

The Devils defeated the Bruins 2-1 as they continue to fight for their playoff lives down the final stretch of the season.

Reid Boucher scored a tiebreaking power-play goal early in the third period, Keith Kinkaid made 39 saves and the New Jersey Devils kept their faint playoff hopes alive with a 2-1 victory over the struggling Boston Bruins on Tuesday night.

Boucher also set up a power-play goal by Travis Zajac, helping the Devils stop a two-game losing streak and hand the Bruins their sixth loss in seven games.

Brad Marchand scored for the first time in nine games for the Bruins, who outshot New Jersey 40-15 but made the mistake of giving the Devils five power plays, two of which they converted. >> Read more

Casey Cizikas scored a lucky early goal, Jaroslav Halak had 27 saves and the New York Islanders opened a season-long, seven-game trip with a 1-0 win over the New Jersey Devils on Friday night.

Halak was outstanding and had a little help from the post while getting his third shutout. Reid Boucher's 1-on-1 chance in the first period hit iron, but Halak also made great saves in close against Sergey KalininKyle Palmieri and Lee Stempniak, the last one a pad save early in the third period when the Devils' forward had a seemingly open net.

The Islanders are in third place in the Metropolitan Division, four points ahead of the fifth-place Devils with two games in hand.

Cory Schneider's high of being named to his first All-Star team this month has come with the low of a slump by New Jersey.

Schneider is doing his best to revive the injury-plagued Devils and can help them win consecutive games for the first time in more than two weeks while snapping a six-game losing streak against the visiting Calgary Flames on Tuesday night.

Despite Schneider's solid play in net, New Jersey (22-19-5) has taken a step back with losses in five of seven. The Devils sat within a point of the Metropolitan Division's third playoff spot before a cold stretch has dropped them four back with a week left before the All-Star break.

Reid Boucher scored early in the first period for the Devils, who won for just the second time in the past seven games.

Kyle Palmieri scored his team-leading 18th goal of the season 18 seconds into the third period. Joseph Blandisi was able to get a stick on the puck behind the net and tap it out to Palmieri, who stuffed a close-range shot past Coyotes goalie Anders Lindback. >> Read more...

In recent years, the New Jersey Devils have struggled to draft and cultivate talent. You have to scroll all the way back to the 2004 NHL Draft to see the last time the Devils drafted what turned out to be an impact player. ? That was Travis Zajac in the first round.

Since then, the Devils have essentially drafted no impact talents. Before freaking out, let's preface with this: some draftees of the last few years were flipped for guys like Ilya Kovalchuk and Marek Zidlicky. So, give props to GM Lou Lamoriello for turning marginal talent (at best) into a Top-5 player and the puck-moving defenseman Devils fans craved for the longest time.

However, in terms of drafting players that become core pieces of the franchise, it simply hasn't been there over the last decade.?As much as everyone loves Adam Henrique, he's only showed flashes of being consistently solid. Let's not forget he's a third-round pick, so he's certainly not a sure thing to be a top-flight player.

It might not count in the standings, but tonight we're finally treated to some Devils hockey for the first time since their April 27th loss at Madison Square Garden.

For some players, this is their first major chance to prove that they belong on the roster. For others, it's a chance to get some live game action and work towards being ready for the season.

As camp begins, the team is starting to take shape. Still, many questions remain about the roster and who will be a contributor this year. Here are five of the biggest questions coming into the season.

1. Can the defense begin to rebound?

This on the heels of Jon Merrill's ATO becoming official earlier Friday, meaning the Devils' farm system will have a pair of top prospects on their roster for the rest of the season. It should be a good test of what both can do against professional competition, although I wouldn't expect what happens over the final month to be anything other than a brief glimpse into the two players' talent. Boucher, in particular, will likely need some time to adjust from the pro game after spending his career in junior. While Merrill's college experience should help him transition better, Boucher could struggle at first when faced with a bigger, faster game. It'll be fascinating to see how his high-scoring potential translates to the AHL, though

In "news that will make everyone happy," the Devils signed high-scoring prospect Reid Boucher to an entry-level contract Wednesday.

Boucher, a member of the Sarnia Sting, broke Steven Stamkos' club record for most goals in a season this year. He cannot join the Devils or their AHL affiliate until his junior club's season is over. The Sting have three regular-season games left and then the OHL playoffs.

The Devils could use a goal scorer like Reid Boucher, especially the way he's playing right now.

The Sarnia Sting forward -- and Devils draft prospect -- scored six goals last week, four of which came in Sarnia's 13-3 victory over the Erie Otters last Thursday.

Boucher is up to 57 goals -- 15 better than Plymouth's Vincent Trocheck. The 19-year old's 85 points is good for fifth in the OHL. He's 13 points behind Nick Cousins.

The Hockey News released their future rankings and the Devils weren't ranked all that strongly, coming in at 20th overall and receiving a B- grade. Here are some of the prospects they listed:

  • Stefan Matteau (64th overall prospect in hockey)
  • Jon Merrill
  • Alexander Urbom
  • Keith Kinkaid
  • Eric Gelinas
  • Reid Boucher
  • Damon Severson
  • Scott Wedgewood
  • Harri Pesonen
  • David Wolhberg
Reid Boucher is putting in serious work in the OHL, something we'll talk about early next week and guys like Merrill and Matteau look like future cornerstones. The Devils have never really been an organization to draft the high-scoring flashy prospect, and seem to build more from the underrated group. What do you think of the rankings? Sound off below!

The Hockey Buzz has posted a good look at some Devils prospects. They go over the play of goaltender Scott Wedgewood and winger Reid Boucher. Wedgewood stopped 35 of 36 shots against the Barrie Colts of the OHL. Boucher has 21 goals this season in the OHL. In the article they compare him to Phil Kessel. So there is a lot of potential for the up and coming Devils. Give it a read.
