When the NCAA Tournament began, Rice High School had four players representing the Harlem school that closed its doors for financial reasons in 2011.

Now there is just one.

PHILADELPHIA -- It has been two years since the doors closed for good at storied Rice High School in Harlem.

The Catholic school that produced Kemba Walker,?Andre Barrett,?Felipe Lopez?and?Kenny Satterfield?shut down in 2011 for financial reasons, but several Rice players hope to represent the school in this NCAA Tournament.

"It's really weird being that the school is closed and no more players can come out of there, but it's great to be one of the last guys to do it," Cincinnati sophomore forward?Jermaine Sanders told SNY.tv in advance of today's second-round game with Creighton here.

Edgar Sosa, the former Rice High School and Louisville standout, suffered a gruesome leg injury Monday while playing for the Dominican Republic against Panama in the?2011 FIBA Americas Championship.

According to John Calipari's official website, Sosa drove to the basket with 37.9 seconds remaining in the DR's 92-68 victory and sustained a compound fracture of his right fibula and tibia.

?From what they?re seeing right now, they?ve just got to place it,? Calipari said on his website. ?It?s crazy, nobody fell on him or anything.?It?s sad because this kid just had a heck of a game. He had 13 points, eight rebounds and was playing a lot better.?

In his effort to rebuild the program at St. Benedict's Prep, new coach Mark Taylor is reaching into New York City.

Kevin Mickle, a 6-foot-7, 191-pound sophomore wing from Adelphi Academy, will attend the Newark school next season, and Melvin Johnson, a 6-3, 185-pound two guard out of Rice High is considering attending.

"I think it's a great coaching staff over there that can help me get to a certain point that I want to play," Mickle said by phone.

Rice High School, the storied home of former stars like?Kemba Walker,?Andre Barrett,?Felipe Lopez and?Kenny Satterfield, is on the brink of closing.

"The school is in legitimate jeopardy of closing," Rice assistant coach Kimani Young told SNY.tv Monday. "The school is exploring options to stay open."

Young said officials were looking into moving the school to All Saints Middle School or Charles Middle School in Harlem.

Former N.C. State point guard Ryan Harrow will make a decision on his new destination by the end of the month.

"After this visit I have to sit down and evaluate all schools and make an informative decision," Harrow Tweeted Tuesday. "Place where I can [im]prove and will be happy."

He and his mother, Fern Matthews, are winding up a 10-day, five-school trip that will culminate at St. John's Wednesday.

HOUSTON ? Two players and a coach engaged in a heartfelt embrace last Saturday after UConn beat Arizona to win the West Regional in Anaheim, Calif.

One player, Kemba Walker, was overwhelmed by the moment. He and the Huskies were moving on to the Final Four for the second time in three years.

The other, Lamont ?Momo? Jones, and the Arizona assistant, Book Richardson, were crestfallen. Their season, which included a beatdown of defending national champion Duke in the regional semifinal, was suddenly over.

Kemba Walker wasn't sure his old coach would ever leave Rice High School.

After all, Moe Hicks had been at the Catholic powerhouse in Harlem since 1994 and was one of the most respected and accomplished prep coaches in the tri-state area.

"It?s about time he jumped into college coaching," Walker said Wednesday. "I honestly didn?t think he would ever do it, but I?m happy for him. He had so many great accomplishments on the high school level, I think it?s time for him to excel on the college level.?

Kadeem Jack practiced with the Rutgers basketball team for the first time Sunday afternoon, but head coach Mike Rice says Jack will definitely redshirt this season.

"He's not going to play," Rice, whose team takes a six-game winning streak into Tuesday's tilt with North Carolina at Madison Square Garden,? said by phone.? "He's going to redshirt."

Memphis coach Josh Pastner was forced to take the redshirt off freshman Hippolyte Tsafack this season after Angel Garcia opted to go pro in the second semester.

The Scarlet Knights hosted Rakeem Christmas, a 6-8 center ranked No. 1 in the Class of 2011 at his position; Jermaine Sanders,? a 6-5 wing from Manhattan Rice; Greg Lewis, a 6-9 center from Baltimore St. Frances ranked No. 10 at his position; Kevin Smith, a 6-1 point guard from Baltimore Huntington Prep; and Aaron Brown, a 6-5 wing from Penn Wood (Pa.) High.

Christmas, out of Academy of the New Church in Bryn Athyn, Pa., visited with his aunt, Amira Hamid, from 11-2 p.m, but did not run with the team.

In what may prove a precursor to his college career, Jermaine Sanders lit it up this weekend on the Villanova campus.

The 6-foot-4, 205-pound rising senior wing from Rice High School averaged 18 points and 8 rebounds and hit two game-winning shots to lead Rice to a perfect 5-0 mark at Villanova's team camp.

"Jermaine has a high basketball IQ," said New Heights AD and Rice assistant Kimani Young.? "Once he increases his strength and conditioning, the sky's the limit for him.

The Huskies were bounced out of the Big East tournament in March when St. John's hammered them by 22 points.

After reaching the Final Four in 2009, UConn didn't even qualify for the Big Dance in 2010.

Dwayne Mitchell, the new head coach at Manhattan Rice High School, confirms that 6-foot-9 senior forward Kadeem Jack will head to? South Kent (Conn.) next year and not college.

"Right now, I just know Kadeem is committed to going to South Kent," Mitchell said Thursday night. "Until he's there and he's going to class, he could change his mind. But right now that's where he said he's going, South Kent."

Reached earlier this week by text, Jack confirmed that he would indeed spend a year at prep school.

The Kadeem Jack Sweepstakes now includes two of the most storied programs in the history of college basketball.

The 6-foot-9 Jack plans to visit North Carolina and Kentucky sometime in the coming weeks, although no dates have been set.

"According to him, he said that he's going to set up visits with North Carolina and Kentucky," said South Kent (Conn.) coach Kelvin Jefferson. "He said, 'Yeah, I'm going to visit Kentucky and North Carolina.'"

Kadeem Jack is a hot commodity right now, so hot that the North Carolina Tar Heels have come calling and Jack is interested.

The 6-foot-9 senior forward out of Manhattan Rice High School is planning a visit to North Carolina sometime soon although no date has been set.

"They called me a few times," said Rice High School coach Maurice Hicks, who will soon become the Director of Basketball Operations at St. John's. "[Assistant] coach [Steve] Robinson has called.

Rice High School coach Moe Hicks has agreed to become the Director of Basketball Operations at St. John's under head coach Steve Lavin, multiple sources with knowledge confirmed.

Hicks was not immediately available for comment, but the news should be made official within a week or so.

"The offer is there," Hicks said last week. "I'm just trying to see if everything is going to be fine on this end if I do make that decision.

Kadeem Jack is headed to South Kent, a prep school in Connecticut, for a year before going on to college.

"I spoke to Kadeem Jack last [Monday] night and he gave me every indication that he will be attending South Kent next year," South Kent coach Kelvin Jefferson said Tuesday.

Jack himself texted various Arizona media outlets with the same news.

Seton Hall junior shooting guard Jeremy Hazell could miss up to a week after sustaining??a deep cut on his right [shooting]?hand during the Pirates' 59-50 win Wednesday at St. John's.

After Jack returned Friday night from an official trip to Arizona, he proceeded to lead Rice to the title at the 3rd annual SNY Invitational with back-to-back wins over Boys & Girls and Cardozo at LIU-Brooklyn.

Over the two games, Miami assistant Jorge Fernandez, Seton Hall assistant Scott Adubato, St. John's assistant Fred Quartlebaum and Providence assistant Rodell? Davis were all on hand to watch Jack.

NEW YORK -- When Jermaine Sanders hit a difficult turnaround jump shot over a defender during overtime of the SNY Invitational title game on Saturday, he felt the spirit of cousin Ronald Washington Jr. surge through him.

"I think that fade-away shot, it must have been him because that was a tough shot that I made," Sanders said after scoring 12 points to help Rice beat Cardozo, 63-58, to win the SNY Invitational championship.

A 6-foot-5, 210-pound junior wing player with interest from numerous Big East and Atlantic Coast Conference teams, Sanders has played with a heavy heart since his cousin was shot seven times in the back in Far Rockaway, Queens Sept. 14. He died a week later at Jamaica Hospital.

NEW YORK - After a whirlwind trip to Arizona earlier this week, Kadeem Jack finally got enough rest Friday night.

He slept until 1 on Saturday afternoon and then came to play in the SNY Invitational championship game.

The 6-foot-9 Jack capped a comeback from 19 points down in the third quarter by draining two clutch foul shots in the final seconds of overtime and then blocking a shot on the defensive end to lead Rice to a thrilling 63-58 victory over Cardozo at Long Island University-Brooklyn.

NEW YORK -- Kadeem Jack woke up at 5 a.m. Arizona time, boarded a 7 o'clock flight and landed at Kennedy International Airport at 5 p.m.

After taking a two-day official visit to the Arizona campus, the 6-foot-9, 210-pound senior was on the basketball court at Long Island University-Brooklyn by 8 p.m.

He still had enough energy to throw down a monstrous two-handed dunk in the final minutes as Rice, the top Catholic League team in New York City, beat Boys & Girls, the top public school program, 56-44, in the 3rd Annual SNY Invitational.

Kadeem Jack enjoyed his Arizona visit and is flying back to New York Friday afternoon to compete in the SNY Invitational at LIU-Brooklyn.

"It was great," the 6-foot-9 Rice High School senior said by phone from the airport. "We saw the campus. We went to the [Stanford] game [won by Arizona, 76-68, on Thursday].?I stayed in the locker room with the players."

NEWARK -- Seton Hall had three of the top juniors in the New York metropolitan area on hand Saturday when it beat Cincinnati, 83-76, for its first Big East win of the season.

Sterling Gibbs, a point guard out of Seton Hall Prep pictured at left, Myles Mack of Paterson (N.J.) Catholic and Tyler Harris of Half Hollow (N.Y.) Hills West were all behind the Pirates bench at the Prudential Center.

"It was a good game," Mack said. "Seton Hall pulled it out. I love the atmosphere but when the student body gets back it's going to be better."

Fordham interim coach Jared Grasso continues to reel in recruits.

Grasso landed a double-dip of guards Monday night when Jayon James, a?6-foot-5 guard?from Paterson (N.J.) Catholic, and 6-2 guard Sean Armand, a Brooklyn native spending a postgrad year at Central Jersey Each One Teach One (CJEOTO) in Jersey, both orally committed to the Rams.

"I feel?I had the best relationship wth Coach Grasso and the players that's already there," said James, who comes off the bench for the No. 9 team in the PrepNation.com poll. "I've been keeping in contact with them the most out of any other schools that?I had."

Lance Stephenson is expected to name Kansas as his college destination when he makes his announcement Tuesday at the McDonald?s All-American Game in Miami.

?My guess is Kansas based on his cancelling of the [college] announcement at [Madison Square] Garden and the fact that he wants to be able to have a chance to win a national championship,? a source close to the Stephenson family said.

Miami-bound guard Durand Scott scored 27 points on 10-of-15 shooting to lead Rice to a 67-58 victory over Christ the King in the CHSAA Class AA intersectional championship Sunday at Fordham's Rose Hill Gym.

Jermaine Sanders added 11 points, James Stukes scored eight and Scott Arias had seven.

Ihsaan Davis led Christ the King with 16 points and Sean Johnson tallied 15.

My colleague Gary Parrish of CBSSports.com reports that Miami coach Frank Haith is likely on his way out and could get the Alabama job.

Haith would ?absolutely leave Miami if presented with a respectable offer,? Parrish reported an industry source as saying.

If Haith were to leave, it would have an impact on Manhattan Rice High star Durand Scott, who chose Miami earlier this year over Pitt and UConn. Scott made his announcement on SNY.tv.

UConn coach Jim Calhoun said tonight that the Minneapolis home of former Huskies star Khalid El-Amin was attacked Dec. 27 with three Molotov cocktails.

Calhoun said no one was hurt but that El Amin's father, Charles, was in the house at the time of the incident.

"I heard the window break. Something crashed to the floor. When I looked up another one came through and it said 'Boom!'" Charles El-Amin told WCCO of Minnesota.

Before Kemba Walker ever played a game at UConn, he met with Huskies coach Jim Calhoun and made a unique request.

"He said he didn't want to just be good, he wanted to be great," Calhoun said recently.

"When any kid tells you that, it's a big price tag," Calhoun added. "It means I can get on you every day at practice. It gives me license because you say you want to be great, and I wouldn't want you to lie to yourself, and therefore we're going to try to get you to where you can because he does have great physical attributes."
