Rider will seek an NCAA waiver for St. John's transfer Nurideen Lindsey in hopes of getting him eligible for the first semester of next season.

"We will apply for a waiver so that he doesn't need to sit any games next season," Rider head coach Tommy Dempsey told SNY.tv. "Nuri has been through a lot and he is happy to be getting closer to home. Being at Rider will give him a chance to play Division 1 college basketball while being close to the family."

As reported last week, the Philly native opted to transfer to Rider instead of Arkansas.

Nurideen Lindsey is on the move. Again.

The former St. John's point guard will now transfer to Rider instead of Arkansas and hopes to obtain a waiver in order to suit up for the fall of the 2012-13 season.

"He's definitely coming," a source close to the Rider program told SNY.tv.

NEW YORK -- It won't be easy for Georgetown to replace Austin Freeman and Chris Wright.

But the Hoyas are getting a nice piece in 6-foot-5, 200-pound combo guard Jabril Trawick, who aggressively attacked the rim and put up 25 points and 8 rebounds Sunday when the Playaz beat the New York Panthers, 75-73, in the quarterfinals of the iS8/Nike Spring Classic.

"I think Jabril Trawick is one of the most underrated players in the country and I've been saying that to people for months," Playaz coach Jimmy Salmon said.

You could have a pretty interesting debate right about now as to which is the best Division 1 team in the state of New Jersey.

Ivy League favorite Princeton (1-1) beat Rutgers but got hammered by Duke.

Rutgers (1-1) rebounded from the OT loss to the Tigers by beating MAAC favorite Fairfield in Mike Rice's RAC debut. Next up is Sunday's tilt with Durand Scott and Miami in what should be a great test for Rice's undermanned crew.

In the last week both Seton Hall and Rider have taken verbal commitments from players out of the Canarias Basketball Academy in the Canary Islands.

Seton Hall got a pledge from 6-foot-6 shooting guard Haralds Karlis and Rider landed 7-1, 225-pound center Nerijus Anglickis (pictured).

Seton Hall already has two players on its roster -- Patrik Auda and Aaron Geramipoor -- from the CBA and Rider has one -- Tommy Pereira.

Darrun Hilliard, a 6-foot-5 2011 shooting guard from Liberty (Pa.) High, is expected to announce that he will attend Villanova during a press conference at his high school Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Hilliard also considered Notre Dame, Seton Hall, Iowa, Michigan and Boston College.

Hilliard averaged 18 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists last season while leading the Hurricanes to their first appearance in the Pennsylvania Class 4A semifinals.

Wagner athletic director Walt Hameline said the school is in the process of taking resumes for the men's basketball coaching vacancy created by Monday's firing of Mike Deane and that he hoped to have a decision made "toward the end of the month."

"We're taking resumes," Hameline said Wednesday morning by phone. "Obviously, we'll see who's applying and then there will be a committee put together on campus. Hopefully by the end of the month we'll get people on campus."

Asked when he hoped to make a decision, Hameline said, "I'm looking somewhere toward the end of the month."

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- With injured center Greg Echenique watching the game on the computer from his girlfriend's apartment on Tuesday night, Rutgers gutted out a tough 80-70 overtime win against Rider at the Rutgers Athletic Center.
?
Echenique has been told by his surgeon not to touch a basketball for at least eight weeks after undergoing successful surgery Wednesday for a retinal detachment. Rutgers expects to go without him at least until mid-February.
?
"The surgery was very successful. We've been monitoring it with the doctors and right now there's no timeline," Rutgers coach Fred Hill said. "He'll continue to get monitored and when he's 100 percent fully healed and cleared to play, that's when we'll start to talk about getting him back, so we're just very pleased that the surgery was very, very successful."

When I caught up with Rider coach Tommy Dempsey Saturday morning, he was enjoying a celebratory breakfast at Memphis International Airport.

Dempsey and the Rider Broncs pulled off the biggest win in program history Friday night when they went into Starkville and beat defending Southeastern Conference champion Mississippi State, 88-74.

The win happened on the same night the No. 18 Bulldogs raised the banner from their 2008-09 SEC championship.

NEWARK -- Seton Hall was 3.6 seconds away from adding insult to an already injurious week. Then Eugene Harvey saved them the trouble.

After Wesley Jenkins hit an elbow jump shot to put St. Peter's up 51-50 with the few remaining seconds left, the Pirates ran their desperation play. Jeremy Hazell inbounded to Herb Pope, who found Harvey on the left sideline just prior to halfcourt.

Marvell Waithe and Rutgers flirted with each other over the period of several years, but in the end the 6-foot-8, 200-pound Canadian forward will play in the SEC.

Waithe on Thursday committed to Arkansas over Rutgers after visiting both schools.

"Yes, he let [Arkansas head coach John] Pelphrey know yesterday about 3 o'clock," Tallahassee Community College coach Eddie Barnes said by phone.

A couple of prized big men are making recruiting news.

Jarrid Famous, the 6-foot-11 center out of Westchester (N.Y.) Community College, said he enjoyed his recent visit to Missouri and plans to visit Xavier next.

"Xavier is next, I don't know when yet," said Famous, the Mid-Hudson Conference and Region XV Player of the Year. "I promised Xavier a visit. Once I get done with them then I'll take the next step."

A year ago, Ryan Thompson scored 19 points and grabbed 9 rebounds to lift Rider to a 61-57 victory over Rutgers at the Rutgers Athletic Center.

His older brother, Jason, managed just 12 points and 7 rebounds because of foul trouble.

With Jason in the NBA, Ryan is now the man for the Broncs and they are looking for that same kind of result when Rider (3-1) hosts Rutgers (4-2) on Wednesday night at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton. It is Rider's only game against a Big East opponent all season.
