Robert Bortuzzo

The NHL has suspended Penguins defenseman Robert Bortuzzo two games without pay for a second-period hit on the Devils' Jaromir Jagr in New Jersey's 1-0 loss in Pittsburgh Tuesday (NHL, Dec. 3).

The NHL's video press release showed the hit and described it as "predatory", citing its lateness and the hit's direction at Jagr's head. It's the first NHL suspension for Bortuzzo (6 foot 4, 215 pounds). Jagr (6-3, 230), who did not return to the game, is not expected to miss any games as a result of the hit.

After the game, Devils coach Peter DeBoer told the AP the hit was "totally unneccessary", and that if the Pens' Sidney Crosby was hit in a similar fashion it would have resulted in "World War Four" (AP, Dec. 2).
