There's an interesting degree of double-talk from the Mets about the shift back and forth. In June, with three AAA starts to his credit, when he was moved from the Bisons rotation to the bullpen, the idea was that he would be ready to help the big league team in 2012. Now, he's going to start for a month as the team's slide has lessened the demand for immediate bullpen help.
Pelfrey was scheduled to start Friday in Colorado, so the Mets will likely need to add a starter then. That puts Carson on the roster for three days .
In five appearances in double-A this season, Carson has given up eight hits, including two home runs, and two runs overall while striking out six and walking one. Carson was a starter during his minor league career until 2012 when he was moved to the AA bullpen. He's a big-bodied left-hander (6'4", 230 lbs) who throws hard. His fastball is regularly 93-95 mph and he mixes in a slider and a changeup. He has had consistent control problems throughout his minor league tenure.

- McHugh: 1 GS, 3.1 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K. ?McHugh started on eight days rest Saturday. ?More importantly, he was our guest on the Mostly Mets Podcast last week.
- Carson: 1 G, 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K. Juan Lagares committed an error in right that led to both runs being unearned. ?However, Carson invited trouble by issuing a leadoff walk and then a one-out double.
- Whitenton: 1 G, 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
- Turgeon: 2 G, 2.2 IP, 3 solo homeruns, 0 BB, 0 K
Anyway, this one comes has pitch-fx with velocity readings for pitchers.
The pitch-fx star of the day was Robert Carson who sat 92-95 with his fastball and hit 96 once. He threw 63% of his pitches for strikes (22 of 34). The velocity readings on his change-up (82-86) and slider (81-91) seem a little inconsistent, so I wonder if 1. he really was that erratic, or 2. pitch-fx was misclassifying his pitches. Carson: 1.1, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
Note that Marte and Whitenton are already on the official Peoria Javelinas roster. Centeno and Carson are not, but Adam Rubin reported that they will both head to the desert.
CarsonMichael covered Carson at some length earlier this week. He's a hard-throwing lefty for whom the results do not yet match the good fastball. He'll need to tighten up his slider, which in Mike's opinion was his best breaking ball. Getting him more innings, and more at-bats against high-level competition is a good thing.
Wednesday night?s battle between the Binghamton Mets and the Erie Sea Wolves paired two hard throwing left handed prospects.? Robert Carson faced off against Tigers prospect, Casey Crosby, but it was the B-Mets offense who stole the show.
Matt Den Dekker (2-4, 2 HR(11), 4 RBI) homered twice and drove in four runs to lead the B-Mets to the 10-2 victory.? The win pushes the B-Mets winning streak to a season high of seven.? Den Dekker smacked the second pitch he saw from Crosby over the left-field wall to tie the game up at 1-1 in the bottom of the first.? In his second at-bat, Den Dekker hit yet another opposite field home run, this one a three-run shot.
The B-Mets scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth with the following rally: C Kai Gronauer walked, Matt den Dekker bunted pinch-runner Michael Fisher to second, Fisher advanced to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on a Jon Malo sac fly.
1B Allan Dykstra's grand slam highlighted a 5-run B-Mets third that put Binghamton up 6-3. ?The 24-year old is hitting .260/.386/.457 with 19 doubles and 16 homers in his first crack at AA.
With the game tied at two heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Binghamton Mets decided it was time to turn on the afterburners. The B-Mets used a six-run sixth and a five-run seventh to run away from Portland 13-2.
Brahiam Maldonado (2-5, 3B, HR(19), RBI) lead-off the sixth with his team leading 19th home run. Maldonado (pictured) was named Eastern League Player of the Week on Monday. For the week, Maldonado batted .450 (9-for-20), including a double, a triple, three home runs, five runs scored, and nine RBIs.

It's time for part three of my review of my pre-season Top 41 prospect rankings.
Robert Carson (2-7, 4.25):?3.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K... For the year, Carson's walked 28 and fanned 53 in 65.2 innings. ?By the way, Carson's given up two extra-base hits in 65 AB against lefties this year. ?After the game, Carson tweeted: "#Honestyhour I have lost that killer instict I use to have.. But tonight I got a #rudeawakenthat put it back in me..#startsnow"

Tomlin summarizes the new pitching philosophy as emphasizing:
The good: Fernando Martinez was 2-4, HR (2), RBI. He raises hit season totals to .283/.358/.433.
The bad: Newly signed starting pitcher Brian Sweeney gave up three home runs in his six innings of work.? He gave up 7 hits, 5 runs, 4 er, walking none and striking out 8.
Josh Stinson had his best start for Buffalo thus far.? He pitched 5 innings, giving up only 2 hits, 1 earned run, walked only one, and struck out two.? Stinson induced eight groundball outs and only two flyball outs.
Kirk Nieuwenhuis (1-2, 2 runs, 2B, 3 bb, K)? continues to get on base. He reached safely four times with a hit and three walks, extending his season long on base streak to 16 games.? Nieuwenhuis raised his triple slash line to .346/.460/.558.? He is top 10 in the INT in all three categories. What's more encouraging is that Nieuwenhuis is tied for 6th in the INT with 11 walks.? Yes that's both exciting and encouraging.
Quick Overview: The B-Mets are hitting an anemic .189/.261/.302.? They're last in the 12-team league in runs scored, batting average, 11th in OBP and 8th in slugging.? The team hit three home runs Sunday, and is now tied for second in the league in the category.? By the way, the Eastern League as a whole is hitting .238/.306/.350.
The pitching staff, led by Brad Holt and Mark Cohoon is third in the League in ERA (2.91) but 10th in strikeouts (60 in 77.1 IP), which isn't totally fair because the B-Mets have thrown the fewest innings of any team in the league.? The B-Mets have issued the fourth-fewest walks (25).
The Bisons won despite picking up just three hits, a triple from Justin Turner, and a pair of singles from Nick Evans (who it seems, does indeed exist after all).? Evans was 2-4.
Perhaps my favorite line of the day belonged to Kirk Nieuwenhuis, batting from the seventh spot: 0-0, 3 BB.

Holt, the former 2008 1st round pick (33rd overall), finished his season 3-14 with a 8.34 ERA between AA Binghamton and A+ St. Lucie.? The most puzzling stat was he walked (79) nearly as many batters as he struck out (87).? His?BB/9 was a whopping 7.48!!!? After bursting on the scene in 2008, Holt's stock has fallen faster than an Aroldis Chapman fastball.? With all that being said, with a solid AFL campaign in front of numerous scouts and baseball front office personel, Holt has a chance to redeem himself and springboard into 2011.
Wishful thinking? Lets hope not.

I expected the 20-year old Carson to have trouble initially at AA.? I just didn't see the numerical indicators (K/9>1, K/B >2/5) at advanced-A that suggested he was ready for AA.? I didn't think that he was going to get abused all summer long.? Check his July/August splits.? Do you see anything to get excited about?? His home run has dropped from obscene to "high."? Nope, that's not it.

Josh Reddick's grand slam in the top of the tenth, his fourth home run in the last three games, finished off the Bisons in this one.? The good news for the Bisons is that Columbus lost as well, so Buffalo remains two games out of a playoff spot.
Nick Evans (.308/.388/.582) was 3-4 with a triple and a walk.
The 24-year old Niesen had a 3.63 ERA as a starter, which masked his 41 walks against 38 strikeouts, which simply isn't good enough.? In his short professional career, Niesen has had trouble throwing enough strikes.? It appeared that Niesen had figured something out in St. Lucie last year when he walked just 6.7% of opposing batters, but he's gone backwards this year, with a walk rate of 17.3%, his highest since 2007! The chart below shows Niesen's walk and strikeout rates in his career.

What Happened: The Mets skipped the 21-year old Lucas, coming off a good year in Kingsport, and a so-so few weeks in the NYP, over Savannah (where Jefry Marte was holding down the hot corner) to St. Lucie, where's he's struggled.? He just hasn't made enough contact in the FSL.? However, his ten home runs are good enough for fifth in the League, so he?s hit for some power.? Now, can he make more contact in the second half?

Fernando Martinez has returned to active duty for the Buffalo Bisons, sending Connor Robertson (0-3, 5.46) down to AA.? Robertson had 23 K and 10 BB in 28 innings while giving up 32 hits. The Mets also claimed LHP Arturo Lopez from the San Diego Padres.? Lopez had a 2.77 ERA in 20 games with the Portland Beavers.

After seven shutout innings for Kingsport Tuesday, Robert Carson (2-1, 0.41) boasts a microscopic 0.41 ERA. He?s allowed six runs overall, which means his total runs/game is 2.45. However, those impressive numbers are supported by unimpressive peripherals of 15 walks and 13 strikeouts in 22 IP. On the other hand, he coaxed the Danville Braves into an awesome 14 ground balls Tuesday. His extreme groundball tendency is not new. In the GCL he had a gb/fb ratio of 6.00.
Carson, a big lefty throws 90-93, and uses a slider and changeup.
Remember, ground ball rates are better predictors of future home run rates than home run rates themselves.
