The stalwart of the Giants defense for recent memory has been the defensive line -- while the pass rush garners the most attention, it's the tackles who allow it to come to fruition.

During the first day of organized team activities Wednesday, the team revealed a new defensive tackle rotation amid off-season signing and draft picks.

With Chris Canty now a member of the defending Super Bowl champion Ravens and Rocky Bernard gone, Linval Joseph is one of only a few veterans who remain on the roster from last season.

Aiming to add depth to their defensive line, defensive tackle Mike Patterson is paying a visit to the New York Giants.

Patterson, the longtime Philadelphia Eagle, was released in late February. The 29-year-old former first-round draft pick visited with the Detroit Lions shortly after, but no deal was reached.

Patterson's visit included a physical, according to reports, as Patterson's seizure during training camp in 2011 nearly ended his career. In January 2012, he underwent surgery to remove an arteriovenous malformation from his brain.

This version of the 9-7 Giants didn't translate into a Super Bowl-bound time.

As the media gathers in New Orleans, New York Giants players are watching from their couches as a new king of the football world is crowned on Sunday.

Owner John Mara and GM Jerry Reese expressed their dismay with the team missing out on the playoffs this season. Obviously, change is on the horizon.

This season, the Giants lacked their signature pass rush, which had lifted them over the Patriots in Super Bowls twice and had set the tone for the rest of their defense.

Whether it's via free agency, the draft or trades, the Giants need to upgrade their pass rush, which will allow their linebackers to focus more on stopping the revent and their defensive backs on generating turnovers.

The heart and soul of the Giants D: the defensive line. Let's begin there.

The Giants released their injury report for Sunday's tilt with Washington. Defensive tackle Rocky Bernard will miss his second consecutive game with a quadriceps injury, and safety Kenny Phillips will be out for a third game due to a torn MCL.

In addition, linebacker?Jacquian Williams will be out as he nurses a knee injury.

Running back?Ahmad Bradshaw is listed as questionable with his foot injury. Bradshaw did not participate in practice Friday, though head coach Tom Coughlin said his back was just too sore.

Records aside, there is a clear difference between the New York Giants and the other three teams in the NFC East.

The Giants (4-2) just knocked off arguably the top team in the conference, and did so by a convincing margin.

Meanwhile, the Dallas Cowboys (2-3) rallied with a chance to beat the Baltimore Ravens, but fell apart with the game on the line.

The Giants welcomed wide receiver?Hakeem Nicks (foot, knee) and tight end?Martellus Bennett?(knee) back to practice Thursday afternoon.

Nicks, who has missed each of the team's last three games, took part in individual drills and a jog-through.

Many of the injured Giants missed practice Wednesday. Of course, it's still very early in the week and veterans don't?need to practice Wednesday in order to suit up on Sunday.

Here's who did not participate in practice:

Martellus Bennett?(knee),?Rocky Bernard?(quadriceps),?Chase Blackburn?(hip),?Andre Brown?(concussion), Hakeem Nicks?(foot, knee),?Kenny Phillips (knee),?Corey Webster?(hand, hamstring).

Ramses Barden, Hakeem Nicks, Rocky Bernard, Jayron Hosley and Kenny Phillips have all been ruled out of Sunday's game v. the Cleveland Browns.

None of the?aforementioned?five participated in Thursday's practice, so it's not a surprise they won't suit up on game day.

It's a crushing loss to the Giants' secondary, which is now without its starting safety and nickel cornerback. Stevie Brown and Tyler Sash are both candidates to fill in for Phillips.

After sitting out of Wednesday's practice, wide receivers Hakeem Nicks and Ramses Barden missed Thursday's session.

Nicks (knee, ankle) rode the exercise bike during practice, which leads us to believe his availability for Sunday's game v. Cleveland is in serious doubt.

Barden (concussion) has not been cleared to resume practicing yet.

TE Jake Ballard, the UDFA who came out of nowhere last year and became a reliable starter for the Giants, was waived by the Giants today after failing a physical.

DL Rocky Bernard, the 11-year veteran who played the past three seasons for the Blue, was re-signed to take Ballard's roster spot.

Ballard was not expected to play for the Giants this season after tearing his ACL in the Super Bowl. The move does not necessarily mean that his Giants career is over. The team saw no benefit of keeping him right now. He cannot be placed on IR at this point of the season and the Giants gain nothing by keeping him on the 90-man preseason roster.

I would like to sincerely thank Mr. Kevin Gilbride. You sir have risen from the ashes of my defeat and given me immeasurable hope. Because of you Giants Nation can rejoice in the knowledge that I, Mr. Bad Guy am not in fact dead.

You may have thought I was getting weak. I wouldn?t blame you. The last post I wrote while watching QVC and hemming your sister?s skirt. I was overflowing with joy; straight up giddy in fact. Sue me.

But I took a long look in the mirror this morning. I wiped the smile from my face. No points allowed on defense? Great, that?s their job isn?t it? Eli throws 3 TDs and the rushing attack combines for over 100 yards? Good to know. But those first couple drives? C?mon KillDrive are you serious?

The Giants have brought back former-Giant defensive tackle Rocky Bernard, according to Ohm Youngmisuk's twitter.

Bernard and the Giants were unable to agree to a contract restructure last week, but the two sides have come to an agreement today. It's possible that Bernard wasn't getting any interest elsewhere and decided to return to New York.?

Bernard may not be able to beat out Linval Joseph, who has been practicing with the ones, for a starting spot, but he is solid depth. He could end up in a battle with newly signed Gabe Watson for a roster spot.

The Giants are bringing back Rocky Bernard after reaching agreement with the defensive tackle?on a restructured deal. Bernard had been making $2.95 million before he was cut by the team six days ago. Terms of the new deal are not yet available.

According to Ohm Youngmisuk's twitter account, the Giants plan to release Rocky Bernard. It had previously been reported that Bernard had agreed to restructure his contract, but the two sides could not come to an agreement.

The purge continues...

Although Bernard was not a player of huge impact, this is still disappointing. With Cofield gone, the Giants now have some question marks at defensive tackle. I would expect them to bring in another veteran DT, but this could mean a huge opportunity for Linval Joseph and rookie Marvin Austin.

NY Giants cornerback, Corey Webster is very good cornerback. In fact, since 2007 he has been one of the more productive corners in the NFC.? However, I guess I missed the story written by Matt Mosley regarding a challenge from NY Giants G.M. Jerry Reese toward Giants cornerback, Corey Webster.

"He?s got to be the guy we paid,? said Reese. ?He?s got some play-making ability. He?s got to keep it between his ears, keep it right in his head."

"He?s got all the tools to be a really great corner. But he?s got to get it in his head, ?I?m a great corner and I can play against anybody.? When he falls short sometimes, I think he has a mental lapse in his head about something.?

A 7 point loss?...we'll take it. ?This was no ordinary game for the Giants. ?No the game didn't count. ?However, meaningless or not, the Giants found themselves with their back to the wall in the early month of August.

A 24-17 defeat is not exactly disappointing when you consider the circumstances.? New York played the entire game with a third string QB.? How many times have you witnessed a third string QB even play a series at the pro level, let alone an entire game?

That said, here's what we learned:

DT Rocky Bernard is in a much different place today than he was a year ago at this time.

He had been brought in as a free agent to help the interior D-line rotation.? Instead, he ended up being practically useless due to injury.? The 31-year-old former Seattle Seahawk spent most of the 2009 season trying to tackle people with one arm.

You see, Bernard entered the season with a torn rotator cuff in his shoulder and tried to play through it.? His 22 tackles and one QB sack over 15 games should have been an indication that something was wrong with this player, who had made quite a reputation for himself as a run-stopper.

So how good is the Giants second round draft pick,? Linval "The Anvil" Joseph?? The Giants must have thought pretty highly of the young defensive tackle from East Carolina if veteran DT, Barry Cofield became trade worthy.

Similar to the safety situation of 2009, The Giants are very thin at Defensive Tackle and putting Barry Cofield out there to the point where the New Orleans Saints and the Giants agreed to send Cofield to "The Big Easy" in exchange for the Saints' second-round pick in 2010 has me scrathing my head.

The talks only fell apart because the Saints' contract offer to Cofield wasn't even close to what he wanted otherwise Mr. Cofield would have been wearing black & gold this season.? Loosing Fred Robbins was disappointing because he was a fan favorite; however, understandable because of his age and his recent knee surgery, but loosing Cofield just doesn't make sense.

This week, I chatted with Danny O'Neil of the Seattle Times about new free agent acquisition Rocky Bernard. Here's what he had to say:

Schneider: After watching Bernard play for the Seahawks for numerous seasons, are there any clear-cut weaknesses you noticed in his game?

O'Neil: Rocky is better getting up the field as opposed to those instances in which he is asked to occupy multiple blockers, keeping the linebackers clean so to speak.

Here's a clip from last night's Wheelhouse where they discuss the Giants defense. BT comes out and says the Giants are the "Best defense in the NFL." Take a look:

The Giants defensive line (if it stays healthy) has the potential to easily be the best in football. Their front four from last year is intact, while adding Osi Umenyiora back in the mix plus free agents Chris Canty and Rocky Bernard coming in as rotational lineman. Both these guys are proven starters so to have them coming in to spell the other guys is a huge bonus.

The Giants have signed nearly every player they've been reported to meet with since the trade season began. The signing of LB Mike Boley, DT Rocky Bernard, and DL Chris Canty added $14.5mm to their cap. That leaves them with only $500,000 left to spend on free agency unless they restructure or make cuts.

One of the free agents the Giants are looking at is safety C.C. Brown, who came in to visit yesterday and according to his agent, is expected to discuss a contract today. Former Giants safety James Butler is reportedly close to a deal with the St. Louis Rams.

In signing Michael Boley, Rocky Bernard, and Chris Canty, GM Jerry Reese added three impact defenders while filling more holes for less guaranteed money than the Redskins gave Albert Haynesworth. One could even argue that the Giants now have the best offensive and defensive lines in the NFL.

But how do Falcons, Seahawks and Cowboys fans feel about the Giants signing away their former players? I did my best Harriet the Spy/ Nancy Drew/ Veronica Mars impression (who among us has never dreamed of being an adolescent female sleuth?), and went undercover, mingling amongst these rival fans on web-based communication forums in order to gauge their reactions to the Giants? signings.

The results were both humorous and eye opening.

Mike Garafolo of The Star Ledger reports that the Giants have signed defensive tackle Rocky Bernard to a deal worth $16 million over 4 years.? In 103 total games, Bernard has 281 tackles and 29 sacks.

Bernard will be 30 this season.? He is a solid player, but he is a step down from Chris Canty in terms of age and talent.? Canty could still sign with the team, but he may be too pricey for a position that is already 4-men deep.

Like new Giant Michael Boley, Bernard has also been arrested on charges of domestic violence...
