Roger Mason: D-

Mason really should have been a big part of the Knicks this season and a signing that should have benefited a young Knick team. But Mason was terrible in his early season showcase and found himself riding the pine for the better part of the year. He did get a look down the stretch and in the playoffs, but couldn't find the shooting touch.

He's a good locker room guy, and one that CAN help if he can find his stroke.

With the Knicks in Denver, what else is there to talk about really?

Nothing has changed on that front in terms of deals, and please excuse me if I'm not affected one bit by the Knicks lack of poor play. From all information I've been gathering since the summer, Melo wants to come to the Big Apple and help his legacy by saving this franchise.

According to D?Antoni, shooting guard is one of the Knicks deepest positions. Wilson Chandler has started there the first three preseason games, but D?Antoni says there?s a chance Chandler could be the starting power forward on opening day, which would move Amar?e Stoudemire to center.

?Those are questions we?ll try to answer in the next three or four games,? D?Antoni said. ?But those are questions that can go into January.?

Among the others looking for minutes at the two spot are Toney Douglas, Landry Fields and Roger Mason, Jr. D?Antoni expects his shooting guard to be able to make the open perimeter jumper in order to spread the floor for Stoudemire to work the inside. Defensive ability also comes into consideration.

?We are trying to find the perfect combinations, the best defensive team and the best offensive team to open the floor up and give Amar?e the best possibility to run rampant,? D?Antoni said. ?Obviously, if you could spread the floor more it will lead to Amar?e getting to the rim or getting to the foul line.?

All things considered I'd start Chandler or Fields. Walker has excelled in his role thus far, especially from 3.? Unless Mason can prove that he is as pure a shooter as he once was. When Az returns that will change, but you can't expect someone coming off that injury to have an impact right away.

And I guess you can throw Roger Mason in there too at this point, but I'm curious as to what fans think about an apparent battle for minutes between Bill Walker and rookie Landry Fields.

I obviously like Fields, and have great respect for Walker who reported to summer league in the best shape of his life. Both had their moments yesterday, but to me Fields outplayed him in training camp. Enough so to get minutes yesterday when he was on the outside looking in.

Walker had 8 points in 18 minutes and was 2-3 from downtown. But he was a -11.

Here it is everyone. Your first open thread for the first preseason game of the season. I would venture to guess that Turiaf gets the start along side Stoudemire and the starters will play significant minutes.

There are potential issues, but the bottom line for me is can the team create second opportunities and can they limit the other team to a lot of one and done situations, and I don't mean makes.

It seems Wilson Chandler, who has always been very gracious to us here at TKB, is expendable. The Knicks have been shopping him, despite denying it, and with Landry Fields in the mix now, the heat is turned up even hotter on Chandler, one of the resident elder statesmen in terms of years of service with the Knicks.

But what is his value?

But my source says Walsh has now found another doable deal that would net him a No. 1, though the source would not disclose whether Chandler would be the piece the Knicks would give up (a package of Toney Douglas and Bill Walker, for instance, might be more enticing to some teams).
To me, he's still one of the team's top two-way players. Frankly, I don't know where he fits most comfortably. He often floats offensively and takes out of rhythm shots. And from what I've seen thusfar, he hasn't blended well with Ray Felton. But in fairness, it's going to take some time for the new Knicks QB to get on the same page with all of his teammates.

Chandler acknowledged he misses some of his former mates. While Knicks fans rejoiced at the club cleaning house, Chandler had grown close to several players who have come and gone. In fact, Chandler has played with so many teammates in his three seasons, he's lost count.

TKB friend Sebastian Pruiti has a great site that we've featured here before. In today's edition, he breaks down Roger Mason Jr...
Where He Struggled

Unlike post ?Can He Bounce Back?? posts, Roger Mason only really struggled in one area, three point shooting. ?However, that is much of Mason?s game. ?The bulk of Roger Mason?s shots always came from the three point line (over his career 51.4% of his shots came from behind the arc). ?Mason isn?t the most athletic guy, doesn?t have the best handle, and he isn?t the strongest so he turned himself into a three point shooter out of?necessity. ?Doing so is great when you are hitting 42.1% of your threes, not when you are shooting just 33% (which was below the NBA average of 35% last year). ?So why the sudden drop?
