SNY.tv's Red Bulls writers Aaron Bauer and Brendan Joseph discuss why last year's two best regular season teams are in different places in 2016.

Aaron Bauer: So the Red Bulls play FC Dallas this Friday. This is a funny game because of how similar these teams were in 2015. They were both at the top of the league at the end of last year's regular season, tied on points, and showed a commitment to playing young players from their respective academies. They were both expected to compete for MLS Cup regularly for the next few years. Now, only Dallas has held up its end of the bargain, and the Red Bulls are trying to get on solid footing this year. What the heck happened?

Brendan Joseph: First, as must be stated with everything related to the Red Bulls right now, they were and continue to be devastated by injuries. Losing Gideon Baah and Gonzalo Veron, two players who were acquired with relatively large transfer fees and were expected to be starters, created gaps in the squad. The team trained for most of the preseason expecting to make the jump from the 4-2-3-1 to the 4-2-2-2 using Veron as a striker and Baah as a center back. Combine the injury issues and early-season rust with opposing teams parking the bus, and they are a team with two wins in eight matches.

Gonzalo Veron, Gideon Baah and Ronald Zubar will not play on Friday against New England, head coach Jesse Marsch said on Tuesday.

All three are working back from hamstring injuries suffered in the game against Houston on March 19.

Marsch said last week that he considers the injuries to be "significant," but for the players not to miss a long stretch of time.

  • It will be a "challenge" to work through injuries and roster crunch due to national team callups.
  • Marsch thought the team played "tentative" during the first half against Houston.
  • The team will use the bye week to rest players and rehab from injuries.
  • The Red Bulls have "room to improve" on the roster, but the team will be cautious on what the team needs because "it's still so early in the season." He identified center back as a need.

Gonzalo Veron, Gideon Baah and Ronald Zubar are all listed as week-to-week, according to Red Bulls' Communications Specialist Eric Giacometti (March 23). Their injuries are "significant," according to head coach Jesse Marsch (March 23).

All three left New York's game against Houston with hamstring injuries. None would be able to play this week, if the Red Bulls did not have a bye, Giacometti said (March 23).

According to Giacometti, midfielder/defender Amobi Okugo is in camp with the team.

Sacha Kljestan played 56 minutes before taking a knock. He was replaced by Homegrown signingAlex Muyl.

Gideon Baah and Ronald Zubar started for New York at center back, shutting down the first-choice Union attack and limiting the chances on Luis Robles.
