Rookie mini-camp

On Friday, the Giants will open their rookie minicamp at TPC. All seven draft picks from last weekend's NFL Draft will be in attendance, plus seven more UDFAs signed after the draft. The Giants will also host nine unsigned players who will be "trying out" for the team as well as other players who still qualify as rookies.

The Giants currently have 84 of the 90 roster spots spoken for. They had 77 players already under contract before the draft and seven more slots are being reserved for the UDFAs they signed afterward. They will obviously have to make room on the roster for one of those in order to stay under 90.

Then, they will have to release a player each time they come to a contract agreement with a draftee.

The NFL?s three most prolific passing offenses last season belonged to the New Orleans Saints (334.2 ypg), New England Patriots (317.8 ypg) and Green Bay Packers (307.8 ypg). There are a number of reasons why these offenses were so good last season, chief among them sound offensive line play, explosive receivers, schematic superiority and quarterback mastery.

It also helps when you have tight ends who?to put it rather bluntly but completely accurately?are dominant in every sense of the word.

Day One of Giants Rookie Minicamp is in the books and the early returns are rolling in. Although it's too soon to make a determination, the Giants could actually be better than they were last season when they won, uh, the Super Bowl. RB David Wilson flashed his speed, WR Rueben Randle showed some polish and TE Adrien Robinson opened some eyes with his athleticism....our insider Mike Garafolo was over at TIMEX yesterday....

OC Kevin Gilbride on Wilson: "He looks very fast, which we knew going in. But to actually see it on the field, it was - I?m trying to think of the right word - encouraging, exciting. Both of those things seem to come to mind. He looks like if he has a hole, he?ll hit it and has a chance to do some damage...."

2-Day Camp Gives Little Indication of What Lies Ahead

There has been quite a bit bit of grumbling on the net about the Giants' latest draft class being a weak group.

Some say GM Jerry Reese is leaving too much to chance by taking players with so little football experience.

Others believe the Giants will pay a steep price for passing on such linebackers as Sean Weatherspoon, Sean Lee, Daryl Washington and Donald Butler in favor of defensive lineman they don't need.? Now, there are the rumors of how badly the team's rookie camp went, as few players distinguished themselves.

Rookies Get Good Taste of What It's Like to Be a Giant

Yesterday I was privileged with the opportunity to attend Day Two of the Giants'? annual Rookie Mini Camp.

I joined a small group of media people that included the local beat reporters in observing the latest crop of youngsters chosen to don the vaunted Giant blue.

The morning session contained two influential outside forces that made everyone a bit uncomfortable.? The temperature, which rose to the mid-80's by 11am, and a ridiculously loud rock music festival being held in the parking lot.

Greetings from your newest Giants football blogger! I?m Patricia Traina, Editor of Inside Football, an accredited, independent publication that covers the New York Giants. From time to time, I?ll pop in to share tidbits, observations, quotes, and other goodies that I collect from my visits to Giants central. I hope you enjoy what I have to offer in the way of information!

For my?first blog, here is a quick snapshot of how I thought the Giants? 2009 draft class looked during this past weekend?s rookie mini camp.

WR Hakeem Nicks: The first rounder came as advertised ? very polished. He?s not very tall, but he plays ?big.? He?s not afraid to go into traffic and he has good concentration, especially in traffic where he successfully used his body to shield the ball from the defender.
