NEW YORK - Naz Reid was among the biggest people - and names - on hand Wednesday night at the Entertainers Basketball Classic at the famed Rucker Park.

The 6-foot-11, 220-pound Class of 2018 big man arrived with his Sports U teammates Jahvon Quinerly and Louis King. Reid will be back in New York City on Saturday for the Big Strick Classic at Gauchos Gym.

That Reid is healthy and on the court at all now is good news. He displaced his left kneecap during an Elevate Hoops event in Philadelphia in July.

Khalif Battle, a 6-foot-4 Class of 2019 shooting guard who picked up a scholarship offer from Rutgers this week, has transferred to New Jersey power Roselle Catholic from St. Joe's Metuchen.

Khalif and his older brother, Tyus Battle, spent last year together at St. Joe's. Tyus is now a freshman on the Syracuse basketball team.

"For us it really came down to convience and some other factors that we will not go into," Gary Battle, the player's father, told SNY.tv. "In addition, since I will be traveling out of town quite a bit due to a new project my business has acquired, Khalif will be spending most of his days and nights at his mom's and RC is more convenient for her. We also have guardianship over an African young man who went to RC last year and plans on returning. His name is Boko Mupungu and he is from the Congo. Khalif loved his time at St. Joe's and he did not want to leave. However, family is first. Our kids understand that."

Andre Rafus, the 6-foot-8 wing from Roselle (N.J.) Catholic, announced he has cut his list to seven schools.

The list includes Kentucky, Kansas, N.C. State, Georgetown, Butler, TCU and Seton Hall. It remains unclear how many of these schools are actively recruiting Rafus at this time.

GARDEN GROVE, Ca. - Nate Pierre-Louis, a three-star point guard from Roselle (N.J.) Catholic High School, says that six schools are talking to him the most.

The 6-foot-3 guard, playing with Sports U, lists Temple, Purdue, Vanderbilt, Seton Hall, SMU and UConn as the schools that are in contact with him most.

Pierre-Louis holds offers from nearly 30 schools and has taken unofficial visits to UConn and Rutgers. Back in February, he received a visit from Kansas assistant Norm Roberts.

One day after meeting new Rutgers coach Steve Pikiell and visiting the Big Ten school, Roselle Catholic guard Matt Bullock committed to the program on Saturday.

The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Bullock was offered by previous Rutgers coach Eddie Jordan, but met with Pikiell for the first time Friday. He is Pikiell's first commit since being introduced as the school's new head coach on Tuesday, and the first New Jersey player to commit to Rutgers since Myles Mack in 2011.

"I made a verbal commitment to Coach Pikiell and I'm excited to stay in Jersey," Bullock, who runs with the Sports U AAU program, told SNY.tv.

When he was home in New Jersey last spring and summer, Stony Brook's Jameel Warney would stop by his old school, Roselle Catholic, and play pickup basketball games in the school's spacious gym.

There he sometimes met up with Isaiah Briscoe, the 6-foot-3 guard who led Roselle Catholic to the New Jersey Tournament of Champions title last year and is now a freshman guard at Kentucky.

"[We were on] different teams," the 6-8 265-pound Warney told me by phone on Monday. "I probably won, I don't even remember."

TOMS RIVER, N.J. -- Jagan Mosely didn't want his lasting legacy at St. Anthony's to be the leader of the first senior class under Bob Hurley never to win a state title.

So the Georgetown-bound guard, who sports "0" on his jersey as a constant self-reminder that he has no rings, took matters into his own hands on Saturday at the Pine Belt Arena.

Facing the same Roselle Catholic program that had deprived St. Anthony's of a Non-Public B championship each of the last three seasons, Mosely dropped a game-high 16 points, 9 of which came in the fourth quarter, leading the Friars to a 53-37 win for their 28th state title all-time-and their first since 2012.

Jameel Warney didn't want to live through Groundhog Day again.

For more than a half, it appeared that he and his Stony Brook teammates might, though. They had lost in the America East championship game four times in the last five years -- each time by a close margin -- and now trailed Vermont by as many as 15 points in yet another America East title game.

But the 6-foot-9 Plainfield, N.J., native took the game over in the paint and went off for a career-high 43 points and 10 rebounds as he willed his team to an 80-74 victory that secured Stony Brook's first automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Warney's 43 points on 18-for-22 shooting tied Vermont's Taylor Coppenrath for the most ever scored in an America East title game.

Bob Hurley has won more than 1,000 games and 12 New Jersey Tournament of Champions titles in his Hall of Fame coaching career at St. Anthony's High School in Jersey City, N.J.

Yet in the past few years, one school and one coach have been a real thorn in his side.

Roselle Catholic and coach Dave Boff have ended St. Anthony's season three years in a row in the Non-Public B State title game, and the Lions have won four of their last five games with St. Anthony's.

Bob Hurley says he hasn't yet spoken with his son, Rhode Island coach Dan Hurley, about the Rutgers basketball opening, but believes that the school needs to hire a young, hungry coach who can get after it on the recruiting trail.

Rutgers on Thursday fired 61-year-old Eddie Jordan after three years and Dan Hurley, 43, is considered the No. 1 option to replace him.

"Well, there's work to be done so the person that comes in I think needs to be a younger guy on the way up who is prepared to put the time in to just outwork people," the legendary St. Anthony's coach told me Friday morning by phone as he prepared for Saturday night's Non-Public B state championship game against Roselle Catholic.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- When St. Anthony's takes the floor on Saturday night in search of its first Non-Public B title in four years, it will be doing so against a very familiar opponent, particularly for senior point guard Asante Gist.

Behind Gist's 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting (including 4-of-5 from behind the arc), St. Anthony's cruised to a 64-29 victory over Dwight-Englewood Thursday night at the Rutgers Athletic Center. The win ensured the Friars (29-0, ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 4 by USA Today) another North Non-Public B crown and a shot at redemption against Roselle Catholic in Toms River.

Ranked No. 2 in New Jersey, Roselle Catholic is responsible for singlehandedly ending St. Anthony's season each of the last three years. It also happens to be where Gist spent his first two seasons and part of his junior campaign, playing a role in the Lions' Tournament of Champions title in 2013. (RC also won in 2015 after he transferred out to Marist High School.)

RAHWAY, N.J. -- Eight days ago, Nate Pierre-Louis and his Roselle Catholic teammates lost a brutal double-overtime matchup to St. Patrick's in the Union County championship game at Kean University.

But Pierre-Louis said the Lions came out of that game feeling positive about the future -- not full of dread at the heartbreaking defeat that dropped Roselle Catholic to 0-4 in Union County title games.

"We were proud," said Pierre Louis, a 6-foot-3 junior guard. "It wasn't like one of those losses that we were mad about because we really played our hearts out that game."

Coached by former Rutgers coach Mike Rice, St. Pat's has won two of the three meetings this season, including last Saturday's thrilling 58-54 double-overtime victory in the Union County championship game.

UNION, N.J. -- Many high-majors have already reached out to Roselle Catholic's Nate Pierre-Louis, with his list of suitors only growing larger as the Class of 2017, 6-foot-3 point guard continues to play like he did Wednesday night in the Union County Tournament semifinals.

Pierre-Louis, who said postgame that Kansas is the latest to express interest, scored 10 of his team-high 13 points after halftime in Roselle Catholic's 56-46 win over Linden, advancing the Lions to the Union County final against The Patrick School on Saturday night back at Kean University.

It will be the third meeting this season between the two Non-Public B powerhouses, who have already split a pair of games and could meet a fourth time in the South Non-Public B semifinals in March. The Patrick School is ranked No. 2 in New Jersey by NJ.com, while Roselle Catholic is No. 4.

ROSELLE, N.J. -- While Montverde (FL) Academy's Bruno Fernando remains one of the top uncommitted frontcourt players in the Class of 2016, the 6-foot-10, 225-pound forward hinted on Sunday that a decision will be made in the very near future.

"It's coming up," said Fernando, who one Division-1 coach recently compared to Serge Ibaka of the Oklahoma City Thunder due to his knack for rebounding and game-changing presence on the defensive end of the floor. "I'm really looking forward to making my commitment soon."

Where Fernando will land is a mystery, though the frontrunners appear to be SMU, Alabama, LSU, Marquette, N.C. State, and Florida State. He has a trip planned to Alabama in the coming weeks.

There are three heavy favorites to win the New Jersey Tournament of Champions title in March: St. Anthony's, St. Patrick's and Roselle Catholic.

Roselle Catholic coach Dave Boff was chatting with his team at practice on Wednesday about their collective goal of winning another New Jersey Tournament of Champions title.

The Lions are the defending TOC champs and have won two of the last three, thanks largely to players like current Kentucky freshman guard Isaiah Briscoe and current Syracuse junior forward Tyler Roberson.

With the high school season in New Jersey set to begin on Friday, the new-look Lions are once again among the favorites to capture the TOC title after adding transfers Leondre Washington (Teaneck), Nate Pierre-Louis (St. Benedict's Prep) and Andre Rafus (Baltimore St. Frances) to a core that included guard Matt Bullock and power forward Naz Reid.
