The Giants decided to cut some fan favorites on Saturday as they trimmed their roster to the mandatory 53 players. Some cuts were difficult for head coach Tom Coughlin, but cap issues also had a hand in some of the moves.

The Devils have sent forward Mike Sislo back to Albany (AHL affiliate).

The Giants will only have to cut 20 players this Saturday to get down to the mandatory 53 since OL Eric Herman and CB Jayron Hosley will go on the suspended list.

A rule of thumb in the NFL is never cut anyone you don't have to. By Week 5, the Giants may need one or both of these players back. You never know.

There are some tennis players that cannot volley their way out of a paper bag, yet paired with another player go on to become a doubles champion.

The Giants have twelve impending unrestricted free agents on their defense, and they will undoubtedly be saying goodbye to some familiar faces.

S Ryan Mundy - The Giants brought Mundy in last year on a one-year deal in hopes that he could bring some physicality to their secondary. Depending on who you ask, Mundy did just that. He's not starting material, but he's certainly good enough to add back to the roster as depth. He had 77 total tackles with a sack and an INT. I can see him back in camp this summer on another veteran minimum (or close to it) deal - especially if Will Hill is in jeopardy of missing time again.

S Stevie Brown - The lost season due to the torn knee ligaments will hurt his market value. So will his public statements that he wishes to return to the Giants. Depending on how his physical and workouts go, the Giants will look to bring Brown back at a reasonable rate.

With Ryan Carter returning to the lineup against the Blackhawks following a knee injury, winger Mattias Tedenby was put on non-roster waivers by the team. The move allows for another team to claim him, but if he is not claimed, he can be sent down to Albany.

This move isn't very surprising, in fact it was a move that seemed like it was bound to happen. With Tedenby being put on non-roster waivers, it not only immediately cleared the roster space for Carter, but it does allow the Devils to stick him in Albany. At this point, it's just a matter of if he gets claimed by any team. If he is not claimed by noon on Saturday, he will be sent to the A-Devils.

At this juncture, it would be a better move for both parties if Tedenby is claimed by another team. The speedy, former first-round draft pick has shown some flashes of strong play, but has been plagued by inconsistency in his career. He never really seemed to fit into the Devils system, which requires both strong forechecking and backchecking.?

As it was widely expected in the days leading up to the selection, Cory Schneider was not selected to represent team USA at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi Russia. There were some interesting decisions for Team USA.

With the bigger ice surface in Russia, that sentiment definitely helped to shape the roster. Some notable omissions from the roster included Bobby Ryan and Keith Yandle.

Despite no Devils making the roster, the state of New Jersey will be represented by two players; John Carlson of the Capitals (Colonia, NJ) and James Van Riemsdyk of the Maple Leafs (Middletown, NJ)

Corey Webster has been placed on injured reserve, ending his season.

Julian Talley will be signed to the active roster (Orr).

This looks to be it for Webster, who had a horrible 2012, took a salary cut and needed a solid 2013 for the team to consider keeping him. Groin and ankle ailments restricted his season to four games. He will not be a UFA until 2015, but at this rate he would have to prove to be healthy for him to stick. He's no longer an automatic.

The Giants have a slew of questions to be answered this summer, and many of them will rely on health: JPP, Chris Snee, Henry Hynoski etc. Then there are smaller issues that we've been asked the past few weeks. Here are a few...

The Giants will carry three QBs on their roster this season. That's a fact. Eli Manning has started the team's last 146 games (incl. playoffs) and the Giants may feel their luck could be running thin with him. Let's not dwell on that, however. They traded up to draft Ryan Nassib, so he's a lock to make the team. The Giants can't afford to have him as the primary backup as a rookie, so David Carr will also be on the roster for now. He knows the offense, knows his place and has the temperament to show Nassib the ropes.

The Devils have made a few roster moves in the past two days, so I thought I would use this post to round them all up into one place.

  1. Ryan Carter will travel with the team to Winnipeg, but no decision has been made as to whether he'll be activated off injured reserve in time to play Thursday.
  2. The Devils sent Jacob Josefson back down to AHL Albany on Monday, although Lou Lamoriello said Tuesday the Devils will recall a center from their AHL affiliate in time for Thursday's game in Winnipeg. He wouldn't specify whether it would be Josefson.
  3. Goalie Keith Kinkaid was called up from Albany as a practice goalie but will be added to the active roster with Martin Brodeur being place on IR. He will serve as Johan Hedberg's backup on Thursday in Winnipeg.
Kinkaid will remain as long as Brodeur is sidelined, which still doesn't sound like it will be a long time. Meanwhile, Josefson looks to be the odd man out here. If Carter can't go Thursday, the Devils will need an additional center and Josefson makes the most sense. However, as soon as Carter is back, that center is likely Albany-bound once again. Josefson has no one to blame but himself for this situation. While he's been solid defensively and has made some plays on the penalty kill, he's been far too ineffective offensively give the ice time he was getting before shuffling between Albany and New Jersey. Unfortunately for Josefson, the Devils have three two-way centers better than him in Zajac, Henrique and Gionta/Carter and Andrei Loktionov has looked much better than Josefson in his brief time thus far. Wherever Josefson lands, he'll have to start scoring goals or else it's unlikely he'll find any sort of significant role with the Devils this season.

The selection is Manning?s third for his career, but he did not play in last year?s game since the Giants were preparing to play in the Super Bowl.

This season, Manning threw for 3,948 yards at a 60 percent completion rate, 26 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

The Giants began to hone their regular season roster today by bringing in some much-needed help at OT.

To make way for Jones, the Giants waived third-year OL Mitch Petrus, who had an uneven training camp this year.

The questions have all now been answered. The Giants will not apply the flexible IR rule to CB Terrell Thomas or DT Shaun Rogers. Both players have been placed on season-ending IR by the club and will not see action in the coming season.

Thomas missed all of 2011 with a torn ACL and had a recurrence of the injury in his return to the team last month. Rogers is suffering from a blood clot in his leg that has left him sidelined indefinitely.

The Giants will attempt to defend their Super Bowl title with a roster consisting of roughly two-thirds of the personnel that dressed for that game in February. Sixteen new players will be wearing the Blue this season.

By noon tomorrow we will know the answers to all of the questions. When it comes to the roster and practice squad, that is.

Yesterday, the NFLPA and the league did teams a solid by ratifying the revision to the injured reserve rule and extending the league trading deadline to the Tuesday after Week 8.

The new IR rule will allow teams to reactivate one player from the IR season. The player must be on the team's 53-man roster after all cuts are made. The player will not be eligible to practice with the team for six weeks and will be eligible to be activated to the roster after eight weeks.

NFL teams must get their rosters down to 53 players by tomorrow night at 9pm. They have until noon Saturday to claim/drop players and finalize those rosters.

Practice squads can be formed beginning Saturday at noon after the waiver period closes. Teams may sign any available player - not just players dropped form their rosters - as long as they are eligible (see below). Of the 75 players the Giants have on their roster, we see 22 eligible names.

All rookies are eligible for the practice squad. RB David Wilson, WR Rueben Randle and CB Jayron Mosely are assured roster spots, so forget them. DT Markus Kuhn, OT Matt McCants, TE Adrien Robinson, DE Matt Broha, OL Stephen Goodin, DE Adewale Ojomo, WR David Douglas, DB Laron Scott, LB Jake Muasau, DE Craig Marshall and TE Larry Donnell are all bubble players eligible for practice squad duty.

The Giants wasted no time getting down to 75 players today. The deadline is 4pm, but why wait? They have have a game Wednesday so no time like the present.

DT Chris Canty and TE Travis Beckum were placed on the regular-season PUP list. Neither is healthy enough to return at this juncture. These moves ensure that both will be out of action until the last week of October.

Fourth-round draft pick OL Brandon Mosley (ankle) was placed on season-ending IR. Good move. Mosley has the ability to develop into a solid pro but was not progressing quickly enough to help the OL this year, so this move will benefit him - and the Giants - for next season.

We have been getting quite a bit of mail asking who we see making the Giants' roster. After careful consideration, we have come up with the below. There are a few surprises, and we took the liberty of providing some insight on why we believe some players will stick and others will not. Feel free to agree or disagree...

Offense (25)

Quarterbacks (2) - The Giants have been keeping only two quarterbacks on the active roster of late, and this year should be no different. Since November of 2004, Eli Manning has started 119 consecutive regular season games for the Giants. He has also started all 11 of the team's postseason games since then. With this type of streak of durability, only one backup - veteran David Carr - will be kept. Ryan Perrilloux has improved greatly, but there is only so much room on the roster. They will probably re-sign him to the practice squad.

Pat Leonard of the NY Daily News tweets "Interested to see what happens on #NYR 4th line if Stepan works out up top. Wolski's injury may make decision easier short term, but Zuccarello once again has work cut out for him. We'll know much more after the Canada trip."

The lines at practice yesterday were:

  • Derek Steapan, Brad Richards, Marian Gaborik
  • The Pack Line
  • Ruslan Fedotenko, Brian Boyle, Brandon Prust
  • Mike Rupp, Erik Christensen, Mats Zuccarello
The mish-mosh that the fourth line will become is the biggest issue that I have seen to moving Derek Stepan to the LW spot on the top line. Mike Rupp is really the only integral part of that line and should see his minutes increase to about 10 a night starting on Saturday. Christensen and Zucc provide a potential offensive spark, but could just as easily be nothing but defensive liablities. The interesting thing is when Wojtek Wolski comes back, Erik Christensen likelu sits and there is no center on the fourth line.

While discussing certain lines and players playing together, John Tortorella said that he wants to have a balanced lineup.

He has said in the past that he likes the Pack Line and also understands the chemistry that Ruslan Fedotenko, Brian Boyle and Brandon Prust have together.

Balance is very important and the foundation that good teams are built on. The Rangers balance should be built around the Pack Line and at least the pair of Brian Boyle and Brandon Prust. Obviously Marian Gaborik and Brad Richards will be together, but no matter where everyone else slots in, especially if Derek Stepan stays in the middle, their will be balance. Each line will forecheck, play defense and have the ability to score. Some will do things better than others, but you won't have one bad line out there.

No leading the rush and getting caught up ice, while the opposition scored on the turnover. Tonight Del Zotto made some very solid passes and worked well at times along the defensive boards; he still needs work defensively but he was a lot better."

At Ranger Rants, Erik Christensen spoke with Andrew Gross about the differences between going from playing in juniors to playing professionally.

?When you go from the amateurs to the pro level, that?s a pretty big jump. When you go from the AHL to the NHL, that?s another big jump. The speed of play, the skill of play. It?s amazing what Step and Mac (McDonagh) did.?
Christensen scored 108 points in his third season in the WHL. He had 62 final season, 27 in his first season in the AHL and then 46 in 48 games in his second.

Some guys handle it better than others. I think that for a guy like Ryan Bourque, jumping straight to the NHL may be too much for him and he should cut his teeth playing against bigger and more mature players in the AHL first. Carl Hagelin has better size and excellent skating and could definitely be a factor in the bottom six. It's all about consistency though. Derek Stepan had his ups and downs last season after coming straight to the NHL. Matt Gilroy probably would have benefited from starting in the AHL like Ryan McDonagh did.
