The Rangers and Chris Kreider are reportedly in "ongoing negotiations" regarding a 4 or 5 year deal that would avoid arbitration. (NY Post)

The Rangers are believed to be offering "in the neighborhood" of $4.75 million per season while Kreider is asking for $5.25 million per season. (NY Post)

A four-year deal would buy out Kreider's first two-years as a UFA while a five-year deal would buy out his first three-years as a UFA. (NY Post)

Adam Rotter: I think that anything at $5 million or under is fair for Kreider if the Rangers are buying out UFA years. Presumably he will continue to improve in the way that Derick Brassard did after he signed his five-year deal worth $25 million. I still think that it's either long-term deal or trade for Kreider as a one-year deal doesn't entirely make sense as it just leads to doing this whole thing again next summer.

  • NYR: $3.2 million

Elliotte Friedman was on a USA Today Podcast and spoke about how if the Rangers do keep Keith Yandle they wouldn't get "nothing" if they let him go on July 1.

Friedman said, "cap space is something now. Especially with how the cap is leveling off and it looks like we are going to be in the mid to low 70s now. If a player leaves and Yandle, because AZ has half of his money, I think is $2.65 million, sometimes that $2.65 million allows you to do things." (USA Today)

He added, "I don't think it's the end of the world to say that we are going to take a shot with this guy and then see what we do with the cap money later. Cap money is a big commodity if you know how to use it properly and I don't have a problem with what the Rangers are doing." (USA Today)

Adam Rotter: At this point with how Yandle has been playing, the Rangers can't afford to move him. Had Ryan McDonagh not gotten hurt it's possible Yandle would be on the move, but with how he stepped up and how he has helped the PP lately, the Rangers it doesn't make sense to move Yandle to try and recoup future assets. The Rangers went after Yandle to "go for it" last year and it just makes sense to keep him while they "go for it" again.

On TSN1040 earlier today, Pierre LeBrun was asked about the slide the Rangers are currently on. (TSN1040, via Nichols)

LeBrun said, "I'm surprised, I gotta be honest. They have never really shown these types of cracks. I didn't think they would struggle to this degree at any point this year."

He added, "in particular, and it's the easy thing to look at, but Henrik Lundqvist has struggled. It's surprising and it underlines the fact that I think they are going to have to look at their team and see if there is something they can do before the trade deadline."

Matthew Cerrone: According to multiple reports, acquiring A's RH reliever Tyler Clippard?will not keep the Mets from also trying to trade for a hitter.

I've been hearing all day that, while the price for Justin Upton is sky high, it will likely drop as the week goes on. The kicker is that I think he could get moved through waivers in August, so it will not shock me to see San Diego keep him through Friday, despite everyone in baseball saying they're desperate to unload. I'd love to see the Mets get him or bring home Brewers OF Carlos Gomez, who can be had for a similar price. Of course, I'm still holding out hope for Rockies SS Troy Tulowitzki, but if Colorado is smart they will do nothing and wait to create a larger?market this winter.
