After opening the Big Ten season on a two-game skid, Minnesota found a way to right itself with a backup quarterback.

Rutgers is hoping for similar results this week.

Coach Chris Ash has elevated Gio Rescigno to starter for the remainder of the season, hoping that his solid play in the second half against Illinois last week can help the Scarlet Knights (2-5, 0-4 Big Ten) get that elusive first conference victory.

Last week the Golden Gophers (4-2, 1-2) started Conor Rhoda in place of the injured Mitch Leidner, and the junior played mistake-free football to help them beat Maryland, 31-10.

"We tried, obviously, a lot of different quarterbacks," Ash said. "This is not to blame the quarterback position or to blame Chris [Laviano]. We have not produced on offense here in the last four weeks, when you've got four games, you've got 14 points, it's not good enough." >> Read more

Indiana and Rutgers understand the stakes of their game Saturday.

The winner needs one more win to go bowling. The loser is probably heading home for the holidays.

It's not something either coach wants to discuss, so they're letting others deal with the chatter while they focus on the more immediate challenge - getting their teams ready to play.

Even before No. 14 Penn State lost its last two games, Nittany Lions coach James Franklin believes his team lost its way.

The Lions (7-2, 4-2 Big Ten) will try to regain their bearings in time for Saturday's homecoming matchup against resurgent Rutgers (4-5, 3-3).

Penn State followed up a 39-38 loss at Ohio State with a 27-24 defeat last week at Michigan State, and Franklin told reporters afterward that his team was "too finesse" and had allowed "a lot of noise" to become a distraction -- the latter a reference to talk of a berth in the conference championship game and/or College Football Playoff...

The Rutgers men's basketball team open their season against the City College of New York at the RAC on Friday night.

The visiting CCNY team had a lot happen last season that found them as a Division III team this year. They have been a Division I team, but after a major gambling scandal, the school was forced to make it a Division III team.

Head coach Steve Pikiell and his team took down St. Johns, 80-78, in an exhibition game. It should be an easy start to the season for Rutgers, so don't expect to see stars Corey Sanders, Deshawn Freeman, and Mike Williams much throughout this one.

This is the first game of three in the next five days for the Scarlet Knights. They take on Central Connecticut State on Sunday followed by Cleveland State on Tuesday.

Among the violations by Rutgers was a drug-testing program that didn't follow university guidelines, and Flood contacting professors in an effort to change grades.

This was the season that Rutgers was supposed to take the next step under second-year coach Chris Ash.

Two games into the season, the Scarlet Knights have to be concerned about a step in the wrong direction after losses to then-No. 8 Washington and Eastern Michigan, which was supposed to be a win on Rutgers' schedule.

The Eagles stunned Rutgers last week for their first win against a Big Ten Conference team and first win in 59 tries against a Power Five school.

Rutgers offensive coordinator, Jerry Kill, is back with the team after suffering a seizure early Sunday morning, per ESPN's Adam Rittenberg.

Kill was back with the team on Monday head coach Chris Ash said. Kill was hit on the sideline following a play against Eastern Michigan Saturday, and hit his head. However, Ash isn't sure if the hit cause Kill to have a seizure the next morning.

"There's a possibility of a number of things, including the sideline [hit]," Ash said Tuesday. "But that is not the definite things that tirggered anything. They don't know what happened. He hasn't had one in two years. He's been completely healthy. He was getting his sleep. He's been on a good diet. Obviously when you start to play games the stress level goes up. There's more nights with less sleep and that could contribute to it also."

Syracuse, Rutgers take the field 00:01:57
Recapping highlights from Syracuse's and Rutgers' tough losses on Saturday.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) Paulie Fricano kicked a go-ahead 24-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter and Eastern Michigan made two late defensive stands in posting its biggest regular-season victory with a 16-13 decision over Rutgers Saturday.

It was the first win for the Eagles (2-0) against a Big Ten Conference foe in 39 overall games and their first win against a Power-5 school in 59 overall games. Their only other major win was a 30-27 victory over San Jose State in the California Bowl in 1987.

This was 11th straight loss for Rutgers (0-2) and it had to hurt after it played well against then No. 8 Washington last week.

Brogan Roback passed for 260 yards and threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Antoine Porter. Fricano, who tied his single-game high with three field goals, also hit from 33 and 21 yards, the latter tying the game at 13 with 30 seconds left in the third quarter.
