In his second season with the Whale, Ryan Bourque had eight goals and seven assists in 53 games.

In an interview with Blueshirts United, Bourque said that he is well aware that he isn't going to be handed a spot with the Rangers and that he is enjoying his time in the minor leagues, "it's a learning experience. It added a lot of motivation to me in trying to make my ultimate dream of playing in NY come true. It's going to be a lot of hard work and I have a lot more work to do at this level but the more experience and more consistent I can be will lead to it coming."

At Hockey's Future, Leslie Treff writes that Bourque is having a "very good" sophomore season with the Whale but isn't someone who is expected to make the jump to the next level in the foreseeable future.

In his first professional season, Ryan Bourque scored 6 goals and 8 assists in the regular season and 1 goal and 3 assists during the playoffs

Bourque has said that he likes to play a game modeled after Rangers captain Ryan Callahan and his brother, Chris Bourque, to the CT Whale's Bruce Berlet that his borther is at his best when he can pester people:

?He can get in on the forecheck and really pester the other defensemen. He?s really aggressive and can force a lot of turnovers. He?s a great player to play with because he?s always going to be first on the puck and causing a ruckus. And he probably doesn?t get enough credit for how good he is offensively. He sees the ice really well and has a really good shot.
Bourque added, "I only know how to play the game one way. That's it. If you can just give 100 percent each day ? it's a cliche and I keep saying it, but eventually it will pay off for you."

It is believed that Mats Zuccarello may have suffered a concussion after this hit over the weekend.

"He's really hard working, he's got good quickness, he's tenacious, both forechecking and coming back defensively," Gernander said. "He has excellent one-on-one skills. But he's not a very big forward, so he's going to have to use those attributes to separate players from the puck or to maintain possession of the puck. He's going to have to use his quickness, speed and agility."

At Howlings, Bruce Berlet spoke with Ryan Bourque about why he chose to play junior hockey in the QMJHL over the NCAA.

Bourque said that the similarity to the pro game is what sold him on playing junior hockey.

?To be able to play that amount of games and just even the junior style of hockey is more similar to the pro game in comparison to the college game, so for me personally it was the best decision that I could make. Even the playoffs, with the best-of-seven series, is done like the NHL and AHL, so you?re preparing yourself to play at the ultimate level and your ultimate goal.?

"The major thing that Ray taught Ryan is that you can't control how many goals you're going to score, or some things like that. But the one thing you can control in a certain game is how hard you work on every shift. And the work ethic that Ryan has is exactly like his father. He knows how to handle himself as a pro."

Gordie Clark to NHL.com

Bourque says that his dad takes notes every time that he watches him play.

Bourque won't be an NHL player just because his father was. His brother Chris is the same size and has been a dominant AHL player but has only played 33 NHL games and is returning to North America after a season playing in Europe. Bourque says that he plays a high energy, two-way game and understands that he may need time to develop, but if he works hard, that is the exact kind of player that John Tortorella loves having in the lineup.

?For my game, I have to be a high-energy guy, be a solid, all-around player,? Bourque added. ?In terms of a mold, where I?m at, I?m pretty close. Mentally, I?m there. Physically, I have to put on a few pounds. I?m the type of guy who knows his role. If they decide to keep me here or have me in Connecticut, I know they have faith in me. They know what?s best for me. I?m lucky to be part of this organization.?

Bourque to Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants

I really like Bourque and I don't think that you can discount his blood lines when you look at him as a player. He is lucky that his dad is one of the five greatest defensemen of all-time and can help him approach things the right way and work with him towards being an NHL player. I think that Hartford is the likely starting spot for him, but if he works hard and lives up to what he says his game is, he won't be far off from being with the Rangers.

I thought Bourque brought everything to the table he normally does, except scoring. His line never really seemed to get it going offensively, though he did finish with three assists. I was not at all disappointed in the way Bourque played, because despite the lack of goals, his line always seemed to produce chances. Bourque, himself, took 20 shots in the tournament, tied for second most on the team. To say I?m surprised that none of those went in would be an understatement. My favorite part of Bourque?s game, he brought. Energy. I can forgive the lack of goals when he was out there battling on every shift. Instead of getting frustrated, he just kept working. There?s a lot to be said for that. He?ll be missed next year.

On Jesper Fasth:

?To have him make the team and then be put on that line that really has been one of the best lines in the tournament, that?s above and beyond what we expected at this point,? Gorton said. ?We look forward to the rest of the tournament to see if he can keep that up because it?s tough. This is largely a 20-year-old tournament and really (Fasth) is just a kid. But his play bodes well for us in the future, I think.?
...More and more I think of Ryan Bourque as Ryan Callahan and that is awesome. Jesper Fasth though is playing on Sweden's top line and making a good impression on most people who are seeing him for the first time. Gorton says that he is still very young for the tournament, which means next year he could be a real big part of Sweden's team, just like Chris Kreider and Team USA

....That has to be one tough choice. Play for the country your dad was a star for, or create your own path/follow your brothers, and play for the USA. He certainly has a big role on Team USA, not positive of the role he would have with Team Canada if he were to have chosen to play for Canada years ago.

Ryan, the son of Hall of Famer Raymond, has always been one of my favorite players to watch. He is all energy all the time. In the one year I was able to watch almost every game he played at the NTDP, I never remember him taking a shift off. He?s small, but feisty and he?ll bring that game to Team USA.? Bourque already has 20 goals in the Q, and his 39 points rank 15th in the league.
