Josh McCown signs with Jets 00:01:28
Taylor Rooks talks with SNY NFL insider Ralph Vacchiano on the Jets signing veteran quarterback Josh McCown.

Josh McCown is not the New York Jets' quarterback of the future, but neither were any of the other quarterbacks available on the free-agent market. There was no ideal answer to the Jets' biggest question.

But McCown is the perfect player to get them closer to the answers they need.

The Giants are expected to sign former Jets QB Geno Smith, a source confirmed to SNY's Ralph Vacchiano.

Smith, who met with the Giants last Saturday, has played in three games over the past two years with the Jets. Since New York drafted him in the second round in 2013, he has played in 33 games, throwing for 5,962 yards, 28 touchdowns and 36 interceptions.

In addition, New York has agreed to a two-year contract with QB Josh Johnsonper his agent Doug Hendrickson.

Ralph Vacchiano, SNY:

INDIANAPOLIS - There's no guarantee that the Jets will find their quarterback of the future in free agency, but head coach Todd Bowles made it clear that they're at least going to try.

Bowles said the Jets are "looking into" the quarterbacks on the free agent market and have a few they are considering pursuing. That matches what a team source has told SNY: That the Jets are far more interested in the free agent quarterbacks than they are in the quarterbacks in the draft.

"We're looking into it," Bowles said on Thursday morning when asked if the Jets intend to sign a free agent quarterback. "I can't say we will or we won't. Once free agency starts I don't know what's going to happen. Things may get crazy. But we have our eye on a few people."

QB Colin Kaepernick will be opting out of the remainder of his contract with the 49ers, his agents informed the league on Tuesday, according to Ian Rapaport of NFL.com.

Kaepernick, 29, completed 196 of 331 passes for 2,241 yards while throwing 16 touchdowns and four interceptions in 12 games for the 49ers last season.

He also rushed 69 times for 468 yards and two touchdowns.

Ralph Vacchiano, SNY:

The Jets haven't begun to clear the salary cap room they need to be active in free agency, so it remains to be seen just how active they will be. But they'll have to do something when the signing period opens on March 9 because they have plenty of needs.

So what will they do? Last week, I took a look at five free agents who could (or should) be on the Jets' radar at several positions. This week, I'll focus on the most important position -- quarterback. The Jets will likely at least look for a quarterback-of-the-future on the market. Whether they sign one might depend on the price.

The Ryan Fitzpatrick Era was never supposed to happen for the Jets, and it certainly never was expected to last two roller-coaster seasons. In the end, though, it was a wild ride that rescued a franchise in one of its darkest moments before leading it back into the darkness again.

For better or for worse, the Fitzpatrick Era officially ended on Friday when the contract that the 34-year-old quarterback signed last summer automatically voided. All that's left is a $5 million cap hit the Jets must endure during the 2017 season. And memories - more than a few good ones, and plenty of bad.

So was it worth it? That all depends on your perspective, how much your sights are set on the Jets' long-term future, and how much you value all the fun that was had in 2015 during the Jets' near-playoff-miss.

Ralph Vacchiano discusses the Jets hiring John Morton as their new offensive coordinator.

Ralph Vacchiano, SNY.tv

The New York Jets found a big piece to their offensive puzzle when they finally hired an offensive coordinator on Tuesday. But nothing they do really matters until they find a quarterback -- which remains the biggest piece of all.

That piece is going to be the real key to the success of John Morton, whom the Jets hired as offensive coordinator. Morton has never been a coordinator in the NFL, though he held that position at USC from 2009 to 2010. He was a wide receivers coach in San Francisco from 2011 to 2014 and again in New Orleans for the past two years.

It's somewhat alarming that he's never called plays in the NFL, but it's really surprising that the Jets had to go with an inexperienced coordinator to replace veteran Chan Gailey, who retired after two seasons on the job. The Jets' job wasn't exactly an attractive one, considering head coach Todd Bowles enters the 2017 season on the hot seat and the Jets don't have an obvious quarterback

Ralph Vacchiano, SNY:

The Jets still don't know who their quarterback will be when the 2017 season begins, but the consensus inside their front office seems to be that whoever it is didn't finish the 2016 season on the roster. Their quarterback of the immediate future, at least, is likely to come from the outside.

Just who that will be is still unknown, and there are many options being considered, according to team sources. There is a lot of internal support for Mike Glennon, the 27-year-old Bucs backup who will become a free agent on March 9. But even if he emerges as the object of the Jets' desire, he could be prohibitively expensive. The Bills, Browns and 49ers all figure to be in the market for a quarterback. Maybe a few other teams, too, like the Bears.

Coming off a miserable season, the Jets are in a difficult offseason position. They don't project to have much cap room, at least until they start cutting some high-priced players. And whatever cap room they do create might have to be spent on the quarterback they so obviously and desperately need.

And since they'll have to replace many of the players they cut, they may not have much room to re-sign their own players. The good news, though, is coming off a miserable, 5-11 season it's not like they have a lot of unrestricted free agents they absolutely can't live without.

There are a couple worth bringing back, though. Here's a look at their list of free agents, and how hard they might try to re-sign them...

Jets QB Bryce Petty rebounded from last Monday night's poor performance against the Colts during Sunday's overtime win against the 49ers.

Petty went 23 of 35 for 257 yards while throwing no touchdowns and one interception -- which came on his first pass of the game.

He helped lead two fourth quarter scoring drives, the first being a 66-yard touchdown drive which was capped by Petty running in a two-point conversion. He then drove the Jets 33 yards, resulting in Nick Folk's game-tying field goal with 38 seconds remaining.

THE GAME: The Jets (3-9) at the San Francisco 49ers (1-11) at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. on Sunday, Dec. 11 at 4:05 p.m. ET.

THE WEATHER: After a few days of rain in the bay area -- which should do wonders for the generally bad field there -- it looks like things will be dry on game day. But it'll be cloudy with temperatures in the upper 50s or maybe around 60 with light winds.

WHAT IT MEANS: Yawn. … Oh, sorry, what was the question? Right, the meaning of this game. Well, it's mostly about draft order, I guess. Currently, the 49ers are picking second and the Jets are picking fourth or fifth. A win and the Jets put themselves in danger of slipping closer to the bottom of the Top 10. A loss, though, and they've got some potential for a Top 3 pick if things break right. Or wrong. Whatever. Also, I suppose this game has meaning if you're on the Todd Bowles Watch.

Bowles and Petty on ugly loss 00:01:43
Jets head coach Todd Bowles and Quarterback Bryce Petty discuss the Jets' lopsided 41-10 loss against the Colts.

New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles named Bryce Petty the starting quarterback for the remainder of the season, barring injury, after he replaced Ryan Fitzpatrick midway through Monday's 41-10 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

Bowles said he planned to name Petty the team's starting quarterback for the rest of the year regardless of what happened Monday, adding that Fitzpatrick's ineffectiveness -- 5-for-12, 81 yards, no touchdowns and one interception -- in the loss to the Colts did not factor into the decision.

Petty completed 11 of 25 passes for 135 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions as he replaced Fitzpatrick for the second half, entering a 31-3 game.

New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles benched starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick in favor of backup Bryce Petty for the second half of Monday's game against the Indianapolis Colts at MetLife Stadium.

Fitzpatrick completed 5 of 12 passes for 81 yards with an interception and a 30.2 passer rating as the Jets trailed 24-3 at halftime.

Petty is making his first game appearance since Week 10, a 9-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in which he went 19-for-32 with 163 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

While the Jets have remained noncommittal about their plans to address the quarterback position, Bryce Petty is hoping to get a chance to prove himself as the franchise's quarterback of the future.

"You know what? I don't know," Petty told New York Daily news about being the team's QB next season. "I can only control so much. I hope so. I really do. I love it here. I love this team. I love Coach. Shoot, it'd blow my skirt up if that was the case… I'm going to work to make that happen. You got to go out and get it."

Petty started against the Rams in Week 10 when Ryan Fitzpatrick was out with an injury, and completed 19 of 32 passes for 163 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. It was the first, and so far the only, start of his career.

While some have questioned why Todd Bowles has not given the young quarterback more opportunities to prove himself, many believe it is because Petty has simply not shown enough during practice to earn the starting job.

New York Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey said young quarterbacks Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg need to get all the reps they can get to continue to develop.

Though the Jets have decided to turn back to Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback for the foreseeable future, Gailey said Petty "needs all of the work he can get," according to NJ.com's Connor Hughes.

"It helps to play in games. ... The probability in games, you've got a lot better idea of what's going to happen," Gailey said. "In practice, you only have about a 75 percent probability of how they're going to be, how they're to play, and how they're going to progress."

Petty has started just one game -- a 9-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in Week 10 -- this season before head coach Todd Bowles opted to make Fitzpatrick, who led New York to 10 wins last season, the starter again.

By the end of the game, Patriots fans had taken over the Meadowlands and no one was surprised. Most of the Jets fans sadly headed for the exits, having seen this ending before.

Of course the Jets had a chance to beat the Patriots, and of course it ended with the ball getting swatted out of Ryan Fitzpatrick's hands. And of course Tom Brady, given enough time -- or any time at all -- engineered a game-winning drive. That's the way it goes for teams who have franchise quarterbacks on their roster. That's the way it goes, far too often against the Jets.

Vacc's 3 Keys: Patriots-Jets 00:04:03

THE GAME: The New England Patriots (8-2) at the Jets (3-7) at the Meadowlands on Sunday, Nov. 27 at 4:25 p.m. ET.

THE WEATHER: There's a storm front coming … but not soon enough to impact this game. Unfortunately for the Jets, since weather is a great equalizer, it'll be a nice, brisk day with temperatures in the low-to-mid 40s and moderate winds (although again, unfortunately for the Jets, probably not strong enough to impact the game).

WHAT IT MEANS: In terms of this season? Nothing. In terms of the future? Nothing. But the Jets, with their decision to go back to veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick, are going all-in on one, feel-good day for themselves and their fans. Yeah, sure, they're not mathematically eliminated yet. But Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy aren't walking through that door, so let's stick to reality. The Jets want to beat the Patriots to have one happy day before the reality of their December death march towards the end of their season kicks in.

The Jets discuss their upcoming divisional matchup with Tom Brady and the Patriots at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - There are many reasons why Todd Bowles gave a stiff arm to the future this week and decided to ride with Ryan Fitzpatrick as his quarterback on Sunday. The most important one, he's said all along, is that Fitzpatrick gives the Jets their best shot at a win.

And boy, in the middle of this miserable, lost season, would a win over the New England Patriots feel good.

Jets head coach Todd Bowles won't name Bryce Petty the starter out of fear of a player revolt, surmises Manish Mehta in the Daily News

"There are rumblings on One Jets Drive that Bowles is concerned his team will check out if he plays the second-year signal caller against the Patriots on Nov. 27," writes Mehta.

Petty made his first NFL start this past Sunday, but Bowles said this week that he wasn't yet prepared to name a starter for next Sunday's game against the Patriots following the bye week.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - The optimism of last season is all gone now for the Jets. They are stuck with a season spiraling out of control and a roster that may soon be dramatically changing. GM Mike Maccagnan insists he has a long-term plan to rebuild the floundering franchise.

And that plan should absolutely include coach Todd Bowles.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - In the weird world of the Jets, Mike Maccagnan doesn't have the power to order Todd Bowles to stick with Bryce Petty at quarterback, and he insisted he wouldn't do that even if he could.

But he should. And so should Jets owner Woody Johnson. For the sake of the Jets' future, if Todd Bowles decides to turn back to Ryan Fitzpatrick, Maccagnan and Johnson have to step in and tell him no.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - The encore performance of Ryan Fitzpatrick has been a spectacular failure this season. But Jets GM Mike Maccagnan insisted he has "no regrets" about bringing the veteran quarterback back.

"No," Maccagnan said in his midseason meeting with the press on Wednesday. "Honestly, I think, Ryan was very instrumental in a lot of our success in our 10-6 season. But no, I have no regrets about bringing Ryan back. I think going into it we felt very good about the season Ryan had previously. So I have no regrets from that standpoint."
