The ability to get Howden and Hajak and Namestnikov is a player that we have liked for a while. It hit on a lot of things that we wanted to do as we move forward is probably the best answer."

On TSN's Insider Trading:

  • Pierre LeBrun spoke about Ryan McDonagh and said, "what is interesting and it's what I would do if I was the New York Rangers, the top three teams in the Atlantic Division have shown varying degrees of interest in Ryan McDonagh. Tampa Bay, Boston, Toronto but there are two other teams two that have kept tabs with the Rangers on McDonagh. This is a hockey deal, not a rental deal, multi-asset, certainly when it comes to the Bruins, they are still in on McDonagh but the price has to go down, and I am sure the Rangers are saying that they have to bring their offer up."
  • LeBrun spoke about Michael Grabner and said, "it is unbelievable the action on Grabner, it reminds me so much of last year with Patrick Eaves. Why Grabner? Because of the cap hit. What I was told today was that just when the Rangers thought they had narrowed the list down for the bidding on Michael Grabner, other teams have come in in the last couple of hours, teams they have not heard from in the last week that have gotten in. The bidding is in on Grabner and you can understand why."
  • Darren Dreger spoke about Rick Nash and said, "you have to look at the market specific to Rick Nash and wonder if it's not being hampered by some of the other big players in play like Erik Karlsson or Ryan McDonagh. The ask on Rick Nash is a first round pick, an "A" prospect and a "B" prospect. Perhaps Jeff Gorton and the Rangers are willing to soften a bit there."
  • Pierre LeBrun said of Nash, "we believe all along that the Predators would be a player and believe that Poile had contact with the Rangers."

2/21/18 |7:09PM: Dreger said on TSN1050, "I believe that the Leafs remain and are keenly, keenly interested in Ryan McDonagh. What will have to happen for Toronto to acquire him? Good question. You are talking about 3-4 pieces, there is no urgency from New York to trade Ryan McDonagh. They are willing to listen and if Lou Lamoriello is willing to offer the 3-4 assets, and they are not going to be cheap. Throw out a prospect, who is the piece that fills into that group of four? It will be significant or the Rangers won't make that deal with Toronto or anybody else."

2/19/18 | 9:45AM: Craig Custance said on WGR Radio in Buffalo on Monday morning that he feels there is a "real chance" that McDonagh gets moved because trading him now would give the acquiring team at least two potential playoff runs.

He added that if the Rangers are looking to get a return similar to what they gave up for Keith Yandle, that kind of deal has to happen now.

Reports indicate that the Ottawa Senators are listening to potential trade offers on Erik Karlsson as Karlsson is slated to be a UFA following next season.

Pierre LeBrun writes at The Athletic that the Rangers are paying attention to the Karlsson situation because it would have an impact on a potential Ryan McDonagh trade.

While LeBrun notes that Karlsson and McDonagh are different players, there are only "so many teams willing to pay big assets now before the deadline for a top-four stud defenceman."

Rumors suggest that it would take a "King's Ransom" to acquire Karlsson and that an acquiring team may also have to take on Bobby Ryan's contract (4-years and $7.25 million per). (TSN)

On TSN, Darren Dreger said the following about the Rangers and the trade deadline:

  • On Rick Nash and Michael Grabner, "these are two players that are expected to be highly sought after. The Rangers are leaning towards being open for business from a trade front perspective because of their recent slide but it's going to take a lot to acquire Rick Nash. He has yet to be asked for his 12 team trade list."
  • On Ryan McDonagh, "there has been a lot of speculation around the Rangers defenseman. It's more more likely that if he gets dealt it's during the summer on the draft floor but again, Jeff Gorton is at least willing to listen."

On NBCSN, Bob McKenzie was asked if the Rangers would be open to hearing offers on captain Ryan McDonagh.

McKenzie responded with, "the Rangers are not committed to trading Ryan McDonagh. He is going to be 29 years old, he is under contract for one more year at $4.7 million but if you look at what the Rangers did last year and the trade of Derek Stepan, the buying out of Dan Girardi, they are reloading."

He added, "they don't want to call it a rebuild because New York never wants to call it a rebuild but I would say that they are doing their due diligence just in the event they may be in a position, if the team falls right out of it, if they get an unbelievable offer on a guy like McDonagh. I think they will do that with all of their players, with McDonagh, Mats Zuccarello, who has a year left on his deal, and with pending UFAs Michael Grabner and Rick Nash."

McKenzie continued, "that doesn't mean they are committed to trading those players but they want to gauge now what the market is and what they might get back."

Ryan McDonagh spoke after the Rangers loss to the Blackhawks and said the following about how the team played (NYR Game Notes):

On what he saw from tonight's game…"I saw one team playing hockey and the other chasing the whole night. It's really disappointing. We know we are coming off a big emotional win and a big stage but we're almost at the halfway point of the season where we need to start playing with some consistency and we didn't give ourselves a chance there. They were able to do whatever they wanted. We didn't finish checks, slow them down, their speed. They had time and space and we left our goalie out to dry."

On what the team was not doing tonight…"We weren't battling, moving our feet. I mean we were slow. It was really tough to see. You come in here, you try and say some things and get it turned around, but it can't be one or two guys trying to make a difference. We need everybody on the same page out there playing at the same level of intensity. We've got two games here, going on the road again, we have to find a way to play the right way."

11/18/17 | Asked about McDonagh on Monday, Alain Vigneault said "I told him after the Boston game that he looked powerful on the ice, being able to push away from people to break out, to get out of our end and in his 1 on 1 battles against key opponents, tough opponents, he was powerful, strong, he was winning those and that is how we need Mac to play."

12/17/18 | With his assist on Saturday, Ryan McDonagh has points in three straight games and points in six of eight since returning to the Rangers lineup.

Alain Vigneault said on Saturday that he thought McDonagh played one of his best games and brought "a lot of energy."

From the Rangers Game Notes on Saturday:

  • McDonagh is tied for second among NHL defensemen in primary assists this season (10), and the only NHL defenseman who has recorded more primary assists than McDonagh is Kevin Shattenkirk (12).
  • McDonagh is tied for seventh among NHL defensemen - and leads Rangers defensemen - in assists this season (18).

5:15PM: Alain Vigneault said on Tuesday:

  • On Ryan McDonagh, "he looked fine. Yesterday I saw him skate on his own with Ciacc and it was his first time. Felt okay for a first time and today was a morning skate. He is coming along. I think a couple of more practice days and he should be on pace for a full recovery."
  • Is he possible for Friday, "I would have to wait until he has a real, I don't consider a morning skate to be a real practice. We will have to put him through a normal practice and see how he responds. I'll have a better idea after Thursday's practice."

12:24PM: Ryan McDonagh spoke with the media this morning and said (NYR):

  • "I was on the ice for the first time yesterday and felt a little better today as opposed to the day before. It's starting to feel strong on the ice and doing the things I need to do."
  • On making sure he comes back close to 100%, "It had been a while, we were trying to work through it and it started to get worse and impact some other things. Just trying to be smart with the time that we have at this point of the season, not a lot of games in a short amount of time. Team has been playing really well so it has been fun to watch them and play well."
  • On being out of the lineup, "it's never fun at any point in your career, any point in the season but you are trying to do the things you need to do so you can be healthy and go out and play the way you need to play and not have something worse happen because you are trying to play through something. That is what the training staff and doctors felt was best. It's never fun, you always want to be able to compete with your teammates but you need to do what is smart to and make sure I can be healthy throughout the season."

It was announced last week that Ryan McDonagh would miss the games against Carolina, Detroit and Vancouver with a plan to be re-evalauted yesterday.

Alain Vigneault said yesterday that he is expecting more from Ryan McDonagh offensively and defensively and said that he knows McDonagh has "more to give"

Vigneault listed McDonagh last week as one of the players that the Rangers need more from.

Prior to the game against Montreal, Vigneault said "when Mac is skating and moving the puck he is one of the best defensemen in the league. I mentioned prior to that last game that we need Mac to bring his "A" game, we are getting an "A" effort but we need an "A" performance and I think his last game was a step in the right direction."

3:09PM: On McDonagh's season, Alain Vigneault said today  "Mac puts a lot on himself and there is probably a couple of decisions here and there that are not Mac-like. He has always been very dependable, a lot like some of our other guys, trying real hard to get this going in the right direction. He is only 1 or 2 really solid plays away from being really good. Everybody looks at the last game and what happened at the end but you gotta turn the page, move on and focus on tonight and that is what I want him to do."

On MSG, Henrik Lundqvist was asked about the game tying goal that Sidney Crosby score and said:

  • On the tying goal, "I think you watched five replays so you probably know what happened, he banged it off me and it's not the first time that happens. As a goalie you just need to make sure you are alert. Try to deflect the pass but when it goes right at you like that, sometimes you need some luck. I didn't have it in that situation. I don't know what else to say. It was a tough goal to give up late in the game. Sometimes it's easy to face a shot then have a play like that where my stick is there and it's a just a bad bounce, that is what it is."
  • Were you surprised on the tying goal, "when the puck is there you wait for the next play and when it bangs it off your stick like that you hope it doesn't go the way it went in. It went back and not in front of me. Sometimes you need to hide behind the post and some players, Crosby does it a lot. Just gotta learn from it. Maybe it was a little surprising, I didn't expect that."

Ryan McDonagh met with the media on MSG following the Rangers loss to the Devils and said:

  • Another game without a 60 minute effort, "it's been the story thus far in our season. There is no one to blame but ourselves, the guys in this room, the guys that are in the lineup every night. Our coaches are preparing us and we are going to our meetings and know what is expected us but we are not performing, playing the way we need to play. Every single one of us, maybe 1-2 guys going a night and that is not a winning formula. We need to keep our heads up and work hard and find a way to get better results individually and as a group."
  • What happens when the game turns, "certainly when it's not going your way you are probably trying to force it too much. You want to go out there and make a difference on every shift but you have to understand that for our group to be successful you gotta do it together as a unit of five and move the puck and play fast and know where each other are on the ice. We get disjointed at times and we lose our focus and structure and we get hurt there."

Ryan McDonagh spoke with the media at Citi Field today after the Winter Classic press conference and said (SNY):

On the moves, "they are definitely tough decisions. Guys who have made a big impact on our team over the years and it's sad personally to see them leave, they are very close to me and my career and playing with Dan and learning from him when I was a rookie was a real pleasure."

On the team making changes, "at the same time you know that when an organization does make those tough decisions they are not willing to accept mediocre, so to speak. We made the playoffs and won one round but we are still trying to accomplish the main goal of winning the whole thing. We are bringing in some guys that are very versatile, specifically on the back end, we have guys that are mobile and can play the offensive side, defensive side and should be very exciting."

Ryan McDonagh was on NHL Tonight last night and said the following about the upcoming Rangers season:

  • "It will be exciting. Pretty big turnover, a little turnover every year from one season to the next but two guys, two key guys that have been with me since the beginning of my time with New York, Girardi and Stepan, moving on to different teams. It will give us a different look as far as the veteran leader role. Guys will step up in that area but you talk about the additions, we had Brendan Smith for a little bit of our playoff run and what he brought was much needed for our blue line. You add the element of Kevin Shattenkirk and how he can play with and without the puck. He's obviously wondrous with the puck and I'm looking forward to seeing him contribute to all areas of our game."

Shattenkirk and McDonagh were both recently named as two of The Hockey News' top 50 players in the NHL right now.

McDonagh has previously talked about the excitement around adding Shattenkirk.
