Lachlan Edwards and Tom Hackett are two laid-back guys from Down Under trying to get a leg up in the New York Jets' punting competition.

The Australian-born players are squaring off this offseason for a job in the NFL after successful college careers in the United States.

"It's the Aussie showdown in New York City, I guess," Hackett said with a smile during Jets rookie minicamp.

With issues still to address at quarterback, offensive line and linebacker to name a few the Jets are not done in free agency, but the simple fact is that for all intents other than finding some middle ground in the Ryan Fitzpatrick saga, this team's free agency is pretty much done.

Other than a few more signings and then some of the early round picks from the draft, the Jets can't count on undrafted free agents or maybe even some June free agent additions to provide much more than the roster already has.

I figured it might be a good exercise as we prepare for the draft to go spot-by-spot on the depth chart as it now stands to look at the strengths and weaknesses of the current 2016 Jets roster.

The NFL has set the restricted free agent tenders for the upcoming season, according to Pro Football Talk. However, it seems unlikely the Jets will opt to tender any of their restricted free agents this year.

Punter Ryan Quigley, tight end Zach Sudfeld and wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins are all restricted free agents but none are expected to be tendered, according to ESPN New York's Rich Cimini.

Quigley has been the Jets' punter since early in the 2013 season, but most Jets fans believe the team should be able to upgrade.

Former Jets special teams coach and SNY analyst Mike Westhoff is out at the NFL Combine this week. He answered a few questions about the combine process and what the Jets need to focus on heading into the 2016 season…

On the Jets cutting Antonio Cromartie:

"It probably has as much to do with the financial end of it, more than anything else. I hope that he would be a guy that they can work on a new contract with. I think he has some mileage left.

It perhaps wasn't a surprise that the Jets would have two costly special teams breakdowns in their biggest game of the year. Ryan Quigley's 21-yard shank from his own end zone set up the Bills' opening score as the Jets trailed from that point onwards.

This was compounded when Randy Bullock missed a 40-yard field goal with the Jets already trailing 13-0.

It's difficult to be too harsh on the team for individual mistakes by their punter and replacement kicker, because the main complaints against the special teams unit has been the personnel filling out each of the special teams units rather than the specialists themselves.

Much was made over the Patriots' decision to kick off in overtime, but I wonder if their thinking was that if they could force a Jets' punt, there was a decent chance that Ryan Quigley would shank it, setting them up with excellent field position needing just three points to win.

In the end, Quigley didn't need to punt as the Jets drove down and scored the game-winning touchdown. That might be just as well because his last punt in regulation was a poor one, rolling into the end zone for a touchback with no return man back and a chance to pin New England close to their goal line. Again, this had no impact anyway as New England still opted to take a knee.

Quigley did put two punts down to about the 10-yard line earlier on in the game and did bomb a punt with a 53-yard net in the fourth quarter. One of his other punts had just a 33-yard net, though.

While most of the attention will justifiably go towards the coverage breakdown that led to the 80-yard punt return for a touchdown by Dwayne Harris, that was only one of several special teams breakdowns that could have cost the Jets the game.

However, ironically, it proved to be special teams that won the game for the Jets (or, at least, lost it for the Giants) with Randy Bullock's field goal in overtime being followed up by a Josh Brown miss - his first of the season.

On that punt return, the first problem was that Ryan Quigley out-kicked his coverage. Three of Quigley's other four punts went out of bounds - perhaps by design - while the other was just a 30-yard net after another decent return on a kick near the sideline.
