The Jets quarterback position is always closely scrutinized, with controversies dreamed up even when the team is adamant none should exist. If the team says it's an open competition, everyone suspects they'll hand the job to their favorite. When they say their choice gives them the best chance to win, nobody agrees. Even if they name a starter and give him all the starter reps, the tendency is for everyone to assume they must be lying.

This year is different though. There's a real competition, drawing justified attention on a local and national level because it's completely wide open.

EA Sports released its highly-anticipated Madden NFL 19 ratings on Tuesday, and Jets fans won't be happy to see where their team landed on the list.

Gang Green came in dead last among all 32 NFL teams with a 72 overall rating. The ratings do change based off team performance throughout the year.

The highest-rated player on the team is S Jamal Adams, who is coming off a stellar rookie season. He has an 86 overall rating, which is 11th among qualifying safeties. Wide receiver Robby Anderson and DE Leonard Williams both have 84 overall ratings while Jermaine Kearse (83) and Steve McClendon (83) round out the top five.

Jets QB Sam Darnold is still getting accustomed to the hustle and bustle of New York City. The West Coast kid does, however, have some favorites in the Big Apple.

And for those Yankee fans that happen to love the Jets as well, your rookie quarterback may have rubbed you the wrong way with his answer to his favorite New York baseball team.

When it comes to baseball, Darnold will always show love to his LA Dodgers. But, if he had to choose between New York's teams, he didn't choose the pinstripes.

It is a feat many try, but fail to succeed. And no, it isn't climbing Mount Everest.

However, the stakes seem to be as high as the infamous mountain for the Jets' latest offensive coordinator in Jeremy Bates. The job security for his newest title in the Jets' organization is one of high volatility.

Going back to Brian Schottenheimer last season before he was fired in 2011, the Jets have had six offensive coordinators in eight years. But Bates is ready to change the narrative.

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive: The Jets are heaping praise on the shoulders of their prized rookie quarterback, but to them it's more than just dreamy hype. They're not just trying to sell everyone on the promise of Sam Darnold. They believe it. In fact, so far he's been even better than they expected.

That's why he has "a real chance" to be the opening day starter, according to a team source.

The 21-year-old Darnold has been that good since the Jets took him with the third overall pick in the NFL Draft. They've been giving him regular first-team reps throughout the spring and through this week's three-day mini-camp. And given how well he's handled them, this summer he can expect even more.

The reason? Bates says that's how you see what Darnold can truly handle.

Jets QB Sam Darnold on Tuesday shed light on the learning curve he has experienced during his transition to the NFL.

"It hasn't been super easy to adjust but it's all the same plays," Darnold said on the first day of the Jets' mandatory minicamp. "It's just getting used to the different terminology... being able to picture the play in my head when it's called makes it easier to call it in the huddle."

Darnold, the Jets' first round pick this year, earned roughly 20 first-team reps, according to Newsday. QB Josh McCown led the pack with around 20 first-team reps, while Teddy Bridgewater also had a handful of first-team snaps.

Do the Jets have three good QBs? 00:01:36
Dan Graca and Jon Hein debate over the legitimacy of coach Todd Bowles' claim that the Jets have three good quarterbacks on their roster.

The Jets took the field for their fourth OTA on Tuesday, and the biggest takeaway was Sam Darnold taking the most reps under center with the first team.

But head coach Todd Bowles warns not to dive deep into that storyline. He made sure to note that this has been done in the past with rookies on both sides of the ball.

"We have thrown rookies in in the past with the starters," Bowles said after practice. "The defenisve guys have done that as well. As the reps get up there, you put teams in with Josh (McCown) and Teddy takes turns with the first team, second team and third team. Sam took some today. It is nothing to read into...

When the Jets drafted QB Sam Darnold, it appeared inevitable that their former second-rounder, QB Christian Hackenberg, was the odd man out with four quarterbacks on the roster.

That is why Jets fans probably weren't surprised to hear Hackenberg was traded to the Raiders Monday for a 2019 conditional seventh-round draft pick. And they also shouldn't be surprised to hear head coach Todd Bowles' reasoning on the matter as well.

"We have three quarterbacks. Obviously, we drafted Sam in the first. We like Teddy (Bridgewater). We like Josh (McCown). We just had one too many to get all of them reps, so we held him out today just because we had things in the works in case something happened," Bowles said after the team's first OTA on Tuesday. "So we just wanted to go with the three quarterbacks that we have and let these guys battle it out."

Former USC offensive coordinator Tee Martin explained on The Jet Stream podcast Wednesday why Sam Darnold will be a great fit for the Jets.

"Sam is a great fit," Martin said. "Just going back to how he was recruited, when we first got to know him -- he was a guy that was a linebacker and played some wide receiver. Point guard on the basketball team. When he dropped back and started throwing a few passes, we were like 'this kid can throw the ball.'"

And the way Darnold threw the ball changed how USC viewed him...

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive: The Jets have four quarterbacks on their roster, which seems like one too many. They cut Bryce Petty last week to clear at least a little room on their depth chart, but they still have another move to make. Or maybe two.

Whatever they end up doing, the Jets' quarterback situation isn't as clear cut as some think, from the identity of the Opening Day starter all the way down to the likely odd-man out. As Todd Bowles said last weekend, the Jets are "open to anything right now" -- especially at quarterback.

"We're going to let it all play out before make those kinds of decisions," he said.

For some draft picks, the process of becoming acclimated to a new environment is quicker given their circumstances.

Saquon Barkley of the Giants was born in Brooklyn, and didn't live far from his new home even when he was in Pennsylvania. Shaquem Griffin of the Seahawks may be making a shift from Florida to Seattle, but he has his twin brother Shaquill Griffin to guide him through the process.

Sam Darnold, on the other hand, is transitioning from sunny, laidback Los Angeles to the hustle and bustle of New York City without someone to lean on, or understanding of how this side of the states operates. In fact, he just visited the Big Apple for the first time only a few weeks ago.

Former Giants and Jets head coach Bill Parcells knows what it takes to win in New York. Two Super Bowl rings with the Giants says it all.

So, when he met the Jets' newest QB Sam Darnold in Jupiter, Fla. in March, he saw that winning spirit in him.

"I really think he's interested in winning," Parcells told The Post's Brian Costello. "I say this in a complimentary way, I don't think he's ready to be a star, if you know what I mean. Some of these guys come out of the draft and they're ready to be a star. I think he's ready to be a football player."

Darnold joins the Jets' as their potential savior that will hopefully pull Gang Green out of the depths of "Quarterback Hell," as Giants GM Dave Gettleman would put it. But that doesn't mean he will waltz his way under center next season.

Not as long as veteran QB Josh McCown is in the quarterbacks' room.

Upon the Jets drafting Sam Darnold with the No. 3 pick on Thursday, Jets quarterback Josh McCown took a moment to realize how old he really is, thanks to one of his daughters.

McCown, 38, who re-signed with New York on a one-year deal in the offseason, will likely groom the 20-year-old Darnold during the former USC Trojan's rookie year. And one of his daughters helped put things into perspective.

SNY NFL Insider Ralph Vacchiano talks to San Darnold after the QB was chosen by the New York Jets with the third pick in the NFL Draft.

When this whole thing started, USC QB Sam Darnold was projected to be the No. 1 overall pick. He was the safest quarterback prospect that checked all the boxes.

But the Browns decided to go with Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield. And the Giants steered clear of a quarterback, going with Penn State RB Saquon Barkley instead.

So, when the Jets saw Darnold in their lap at No. 3, they called his name.
