Le'Veon Bell said one of the reasons he joined the Jets was because he idolized Hall of Famer Curtis Martin growing up.

And Martin believes Bell has what it takes to follow him to Canton.

"For a guy like Le'Veon, it's not about, 'Can he make it to the Hall of Fame?' ... He's like an Adrian Peterson-like guy. Those guys, they don't have to play 12, 13, 14 years to make it to the Hall of Fame if they just work hard and take care of business now," Martin said, according to the New York Post's Steve Serby.

Why Le'Veon Bell chose Jets 00:01:05
New York Jets running back Le'Veon Bell explains why deep down he wanted to choose the Jets. Jamal Adams' excellent recruiting also helped.

When Le'Veon Bell entered free agency this offseason, he always had the Jets on his list of desired teams. And once GM Mike Maccagnan came calling with the right offer, he knew he had to pull the trigger.

"The Jets (were) just kind of the team I had in the back of my mind where I wanted to go," Bell told SNY's Ralph Vacchiano over a conference call after the Jets made the signing official Thursday night.

But the numbers Bell agreed to came under heavy scrutiny. The Steelers offered him a five-year, $70 million deal, but after sitting out a year to keep his body fresh and hopefully increase his value on the market, he agreed to a four-year, $52.5 million contract with the Jets...

Jets quarterback Josh McCown said in a statement via Twitter he is unsure if he will play in 2019.

"While I still have a strong desire to continue playing," his statement read, "my family dynamics at this point are such that I would like to take more time before making the commitment to play in 2019. I have spoken to the Jets to make them aware. I'm excited about spending time with my family as we process what's next."

With the exception of a couple of vague tweets heard 'round the NFL, Le'Veon Bell was one of the quietest free agents in the league on Monday. If the Jets were looking to make some noise by signing the NFL's No. 1 free agent, it looks like they're going to have to wait.

For the moment, as multiple NFL sources told SNY, the Jets are believed to be the favorite to land the 27-year-old running back. But the truth is, only Bell knows for sure for whom he will toll. He said on Twitter he had more than two teams to choose from. The Jets, 49ers, Eagles, Raiders, Dolphins and Bears had all been mentioned as possible destinations.

Over the next month or so, we're going to be reviewing some of the top draft prospects at each position to assess some potential candidates that the Jets will show interest in. We continue today with a look at the 2019 wide receiver class.

Jets needs: wide receivers

Having signed Quincy Enunwa to an extension and Robby Anderson to a restricted free agency tender, the Jets should have their two leading receivers from last year back in the fold. However, they don't currently have much beyond those two. Charone Peake is still under contract and Andre Roberts could be re-signed, but most of their contributions in 2018 were on special teams.

Vacc talks Jets "D" 00:01:10
SNY's Ralph Vacchiano shares some insights on who the Jets may be targeting in the NFL Draft to improve their pass rush

INDIANAPOLIS - Mike Maccagnan and Adam Gase set the stage for an aggressive offseason for the Jets when they met the media at the NFL scouting combine last week, in part because they have no choice. They have a depleted roster, tons of cap room, a high draft pick, and a willingness to trade.

So how will they reshape their roster? They didn't exactly lay out a blueprint. But from their press conferences and plenty of info from NFL sources, here are 10 things we learned about the Jets' plans while they were at the combine...

1. The Jets aren't trading for Antonio Brown

Jets GM on plans for cap space 00:01:04
New York Jets GM Mike Maccagnan discusses his team's major cap space and his plans to be aggressive in free agency this offseason.

When the new league year begins on March 13 and free agency officially opens up, the Jets are supposed to be one of the most aggressive teams after some of the top names on the market. And their GM, Mike Maccagnan, confirmed that at the NFL Combine on Wednesday.

Maccagnan and his franchise have everything to work with this offseason to lure free agents: loads of cap space (estimated at about $102 million by OverTheCap.com), a fresh coaching staff that includes head coach Adam Gase and defensive coordinator Gregg Williams leading the way, and a young core that touts players like Sam Darnold and Jamal Adams.

The Jets haven't been to the playoffs in three straight seasons, but that streak could end next season if the Jets land the players the desire on the market. Maccagnan said a plan is in place...

Adam Gase addressed the media for the first time on Wednesday at the NFL Scouting Combine since he was introduced as the Jets' new head coach in January.

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive: The Jets need all the help they can get as they try to quickly rebuild in one of the most important offseasons in franchise history. So they sure could use the pick near the top of the second round that they gave to the Indianapolis Colts.

Not that the Jets would do it any differently, of course. Dealing that pick (and two others) put them in position to draft quarterback Sam Darnold, the most important piece in their rebuilding puzzle and the franchise quarterback they've been seeking for 50 years. So there are no regrets, no hindsight and no wishing they still had two selections in the first 34 picks.

The Jets do still have two picks in the first two days, though. The NFL Draft is 2 1/2 months away and they'll have to get through the combine, the Pro Days and interviews before their draft board settles down. But here's an early look at what the Jets might do on Days 1 and 2:

Jets CEO Christopher Johnson made his choice on Dec. 30 when he fired Todd Bowles, but not Mike Maccagnan. It was a signal that he believed in his general manager, bought into his vision, and wasn't concerned about his spotty record.

And though Johnson insisted he would never give anyone a playoff mandate ("Absolutely not," he said), the message from his actions are perfectly clear: This is Maccagnan's roster, Adam Gase is Maccagnan's coach, and this is the offseason Maccagnan has to turn the Jets from laughingstocks into a winner.

In other words, as one of the most important offseasons in Jets' history begins, the pressure on Maccagnan is high.

The Giants and Jets organizations don't like each other very much, which happens when teams share a stadium and a city. The Jets have long had an inferiority complex from feeling like New York's little brother. The Giants have never hid their feelings of superiority when it comes to the Jets.

So neither franchise has ever been inclined to do anything that might even appear to help out the other, which is a huge part of the reason why the two have never made a trade.

It might be time they get over those issues and their egos, though. Because a trade of draft picks between the Giants and Jets this year makes a whole lot of sense.

Jamal Adams hasn't been shy while calling for the Jets to trade for Antonio Brown and sign Le'Veon Bell. On Wednesday, he went into detail about it.

And while many (including one former teammate) think the Jets should shy away from Brown because of his off-field issues, Adams made it clear he doesn't really care.

"Can he help us win? That's the main thing with me," Adams said Wednesday. "That should be the main thing with the organization."

With less than three months to go until the 2019 NFL Draft, Sports Illustrated's Kalyn Kahler's updated mock draft has the Jets opting to keep their third overall pick for a pass rusher.

In this mock, Kahler has Gang Green picking Michigan prospect Rashan Gary.

The defensive tackle is described as the total package with the ability to play the edge or inside -- pushing him into the top three of the mock. The combination of Gary's size, strength and athleticism makes the 21-year-old a difficult matchup.

Adam Gase wants to be in New York for the long haul.

The new Jets head coach has seen his fair share of quarterback injuries from his time with the Miami Dolphins. Gase adjusted to the injury bug's brutal reality by changing his quarterback 10 times in 49 games as Miami's coach, NBC Sport's Peter King notes. Now, he wants nothing more than to build consistency and endurance with rookie Sam Darnold and the Jets.

A team's character is built from confidence in its quarterback. Game to game and week to week, plays are dictated by a strong team culture and the offense's dependency on the shot caller. Gase lacked that good fortune with the Dolphins, dealing instead with injuries to first-round pick Ryan Tannehill in his first year as Miami's head coach.

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | ArchiveTodd Bowles came to the Jets with the reputation of being one of the best defensive minds in football. And in his first season, it was easy to see why. After that, it was all a steady roll downhill towards the Jets becoming one of the worst defenses in the league.

That's startling considering how they had invested in their defense. For eight straight years, before they took quarterback Sam Darnold, they had taken a defensive player in the first round of the draft. And they had spent big money on defenders in free agency like corners Trumaine Johnson and Morris Claiborne as well as linebacker Avery Williamson.

Yet they still had no pass rush and they wore down late in games. The Jets' defense was a remarkable group of underachievers.

What does hiring Adam Gase mean? 00:01:02
What does new Jets head coach Adam Gase mean for Sam Darnold's future? Will he help the young QB mature?

The Jets had goals they wanted to reach when hiring their 19th head coach in franchise history. They were looking for a candidate with prior head coaching experience, and in particular, an offensive mind. Developing quarterbacks would also be a plus, too.

And the organization believed that man was former Dolphins head coach Adam Gase.

News broke Wednesday night that Gase is to be named the Jets' new head coach, and they did so knowing he could be a good mentor to young QB Sam Darnold. The rookie this season solidified his role as the quarterback of the future, and it will be up to Gase to continue that development, and hopefuly tap into his strengths to make him and the offense a dangerous group...

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive: Before there was a Sean McVay, the young offensive whiz kid-coach that every team suddenly wants to copy, Adam Gase was that object of everyone's affections. He was the next offensive genius, the hottest assistant on the coaching carousel.

Just three years ago, when he was only 36, he was McVay before anyone even knew of McVay.

The luster may have faded from his star in the last three years as he went 23-25 with a somewhat dysfunctional Miami Dolphins organization. But the Jets were undeterred by the mess he left in Miami.

Not everyone believes that the next Jets head coach needs to be some sort of offensive-minded guru.

Charley Casserly, a former GM with the Redskins and Texans and consultant who helped the Jets hire Todd Bowles and Mike Maccagnan, says there are more important factors into searching for a head coach.

"The single most important thing you have to do is find a leader, a leader of men, OK?" Casserly said in a Q&A with Daryl Slater of NJ.com. "A guy who can communicate, a guy who can evaluate -- evaluate coaches, evaluate players. A guy who manage -- manage the players and manage the coaches. Those are the critical factors."

Jets CEO Christopher Johnson sees the Jets as a "really good spot" for a new head coach. They've got a franchise quarterback, "some great young players." And, of course, they're in New York.

"Some people will be attracted to (that), maybe some won't," Johnson said. "But if you make it here, you're a freakin' legend."

That's true. Whoever leads the Jets to their first Super Bowl in 50-plus years will be a sports immortal. That possibility could be attractive for some. Overall, the Jets can offer a pretty attractive situation regardless for a new coach.

With Gase in the picture, he joins another young, offensive-minded coach in Kliff Kingsbury among the candidates the Jets are interviewing.

Both are thought to be offensive gurus who could help the development of Sam Darnold. Kingsbury already has the blessing of Jets Pro Bowl safety Jamal Adams, but there are plenty of pros and cons to hiring both these men. SNY's Ralph Vacchiano takes a deeper look into weighing these two options:

At the end of a rough season in Jacksonville, it became increasingly apparent the relationship between the team and running back Leonard Fournette had become fractious. A few days ago, Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone confirmed the Jaguars have acted to void guarantees within Fournette's rookie contract following the latest in a series of troubling incidents.

Naturally, these events have fuelled speculation that the Jaguars will look to sever ties with Fournette with Jay Glazer recently reporting they might be looking to blow up their roster. With the Jets expected to target Le'Veon Bell in the offseason, some have suggested that Fournette could be a lower-cost alternative, or at least a viable fall-back plan, as they look to upgrade their running back position. However, there are reasons to believe the Jets should look elsewhere.

After Jets safety Jamal Adams intimated he thinks USC offensive coordinator and former Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury is the best candidate to coach the Jets next season, he explained why:

Because he can help develop Sam Darnold.

"He's an offensive-minded coach," Adams said on WFAN's "Carlin, Maggie and Bart" show, according to Newsday's Al Iannazzone. "He's going to bring swagger. He's going to develop Sam into a great quarterback. Look at his track record."

Takeaways from Gettleman on Eli 00:01:25
Did Giants GM Dave Gettleman tip the Giants' hand for who would start under center in 2019?

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Dave Gettleman did everything he could to not commit to Eli Manning as the Giants quarterback in 2019 in his press conference on Wednesday. He made it clear from the start he wasn't ready to answer that question, and he followed up by ducking every attempt.

But maybe the better way to read his answers is that he didn't decommit to Manning as the quarterback of the Giants either. In fact, he acknowledged that the soon-to-be-38-year-old "still can make the NFL throws. You know what I'm saying? He's still got it." And Manning's stats - 4,299 yards, 21 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and a career-high completion percentage of 66 percent -- "wasn't too shabby either," Gettleman said.

5 facts to know: Mike McCarthy 00:00:33
Mike McCarthy coached the Packers for 13 seasons, but what else is relevant about McCarthy as he's considered for the head coaching job?

Former Packers head coach Mike McCarthy is a hot name on the head coaching market, and one of his former quarterbacks thinks a marriage with the Jets would be a perfect match.

Speaking on SiriusXM NFL Radio, former Jets and Packers QB Brett Favre said he believes McCarthy heading to New York or Cleveland would be the best place for him.

Why? The young quarterback situation...

Sam Darnold started his rookie campaign with a bang and then went through the roller coaster that was his first full season in the NFL. The Jets' rookie QB entered the offseason with his head held high and reflected back on his first year in an article he penned for NewYorkJets.com

"It feels like forever ago my first pass went the other way for six in Detroit," said Darnold, who started his career off with an interception return for a touchdown. "Actually, after I threw that pass, I think I was smiling as I was walking back to the sideline. I was just like, 'Man, of course this happens to me.' It's the worst possible thing that could've happened, but I was really proud of the way we responded."

The Jets crushed the Lions 48-17, as Darnold finished with 198 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

Two days into the Jets' search for a new coach, the "extensive" field of candidates that CEO Christopher Johnson has compiled is beginning to emerge. It so far includes three assistants they've requested permission to interview, two former NFL head coaches and maybe a third. They've also shown an interest in dipping into the college ranks, where they will interview one former head coach, they've done background work on one big name, and were shot down by another.

Bent, theJetsBlog.com Follow on Twitter: On Sunday afternoon, Sam Darnold put the finishing touches on a rookie year that saw him complete 58 percent of his passes for 2,865 yards and 17 touchdowns, with 15 interceptions and two lost fumbles. He won four out of his 13 starts, but ended the season on an uptick, as he didn't throw any interceptions in the final three games.

How does his season compare with that of the other four first round quarterbacks from April's draft?

Johnson, Maccagnan talk to media 00:01:27
Christopher Johnson and Mike Maccagnan talk to the media after firing Todd Bowles. What are they looking for as they shape the Jets future?

One thing is clear in the search for the Jets' new head coach: Christopher Johnson is calling all the shots.

The Jets CEO will make the final decision on who to hire, as well as have the head coach report to him instead of GM Mike Maccagnan -- the same reporting structure that was under place with Todd Bowles.

"The buck stops with me and I have to do a better job," Johnson told reporters on Monday.

Fresh off the market with a new contract extension, Jets wide receiver Quincy Enunwa knows what qualities he's looking for in New York's next head coach.

The Jets signed Enunwa to a four-year, $36 million deal after the 26-year-old wideout spent four seasons under recently fired head coach Todd Bowles. Enunwa said he didn't want to see Bowles lose his job after the Jets went four consecutive seasons without a playoff berth. But he's aware of the type of head coach his team needs to turn its luck around.

"I just want somebody who can help us win," Enunwa said. "No nonsense. [Someone who] can really crack down. Keep everybody on a standard."

Jets react to Bowles firing 00:01:06
Sam Darnold, Avery Williamson and Quincy Enunwa react to Jets Head Coach Todd Bowles being fired.

The firing of Jets head coach Todd Bowles on Sunday was hardly a surprise, but the news was still disappointing to hear for many of his players.

Jets rookie quarterback Sam Darnold said that it is "not something you want to deal with" in your first year in the leauge.

"It is what it is," Darnold added. "Just got to move forward and see individually as players on offense and defense how we can improve from here."

In his first ever meeting with Tom Brady, Jets rookie Sam Darnold was less effective than he's been over the past few weeks. However, in tough circumstances, his performance in New England was nothing to be ashamed of, despite the fact the Jets were blown out by 35 points.

Let's look at some specific examples before we draw conclusions:
