Jets head coach Adam Gase entering another week coming off a win at home, searching for his team's first win streak of the season. They have a good chance to make that happen against the lowly Redskins, whose only win this season came against the Dolphins.

During his daily presser before practice, Gase was brought to the attention of some of his players saying this franchise as had a hard time sustaining success, though. Just when it looks like they've turned the corner with a big win, they end up taking a loss the next week to counteract it.

That's why Gase is determined to focus solely on this week, and not have the win in the back of his mind. For him, the past week -- win or loss -- doesn't matter.

Adam Gase joined ESPN and YES Network's The Michael Kay Show on Tuesday to discuss the Jets' huge win over the Giants this past week.

Gase discussed the performance of his young quarterback Sam Darnold and how his play seemed different when compared to other weeks this season.

"I thought he played really well," Gase told Michael Kay. "He did a great job of controlling really the things that he could control. He did a good job of making the right decision when he was in the pocket, whether it be taking a sack, throwing the ball away, just those little tiny things instead of trying to go out there and win it by himself. He did a good job of spreading the ball around, doing what he had to do to move the ball down the field."

It was announced by Jets head coach Adam Gase that TE Chris Herndon and G Brian Winters suffered tough injuries during the win over the Giants on Sunday. Now, it's the last game the two Jets will play this season.

The Jets announced via Twitter that both Herndon and Winters have been placed on the season-ending IR. Herndon suffered a fractured rib, while Winters re-dislocated his shoulder and may need surgery.

This is particularily tough for Herndon, who had the exact opposite sophomore campaign (or lack thereof) than his rookie season, where he proved to be a playmaker at the tight end position.

Crowder: Jets showed resiliency 00:00:59
Jamison Crowder talked to Jeane Coakley after the Jets win. The wide out believes the team can build on this win to start a win streak.

Jets wide receiver Jamison Crowder spoke with SNY's Jeane Coakley after the team's 34-27 win over the Giants.

"I thought we played a really good game today," Crowder said. "Like you said, started out hot, kind of stalemated a little bit. But then was able to finish at the end of the game, and that's what we needed... Some things we still got to clean up, as always, but I thought we played good overall."

Crowder had five catches for 81 yards and one touchdown in the win. He scored on a 23-yard pass from Sam Darnold in the first quarter to give the Jets an early 14-0 lead.

In their first game against each other at their shared home in MetLife Stadium, Daniel Jones and Sam Darnold put up some solid numbers for their respective teams. But Darnold got the last laugh as the Jets pulled out a 34-27 win over the Giants.

On paper, it seems that Jones got the best of Darnold based on individual statistics--Jones finished the game 26-of-40 for 308 yards, four touchdowns and zero interceptions, compared to Darnold's not as eye popping performance of 230 yards and one touchdown on 19-of-30 passing--Darnold also ran in for a touchdown, as well.

But the glaring issues for Jones came at a familiar spot that's been hurting him all season: holding on to the football while in the pocket.

Jets happy after team win 00:01:32
Le'Veon Bell and Sam Darnold were content after the 34-27 win. Bell was complimentary of Sam and leading the team during the comeback.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The season has already been embarrassing for the Giants. On Sunday they managed to make it worse.

And that's a huge problem for Giants head coach Pat Shurmur and his coaching staff after the Giants lost to the awful Jets, 34-27. Things were bad enough, but a loss to the crosstown rivals is a humiliating defeat that is sure to enrage owner John Mara. Even worse: They've now got two weeks to stew about it, thanks to an ill-timed bye.

To this point, Shurmur wasn't really on a hot seat and his coaching staff wasn't in much danger. The Giants underwent an uncharacteristic, in-season change just two years ago and don't really have an appetite to do that again. GM Dave Gettleman also genuinely seems to like Shurmur as a coach, and according to a team source, has preached patience and believes the team is headed in the right direction.

The Jets lost some protection for Sam Darnold in their tight matchup with the Giants Sunday, as right guard Brian Winters has been ruled out for the remainder of the game with a shoulder injury.

On a 3rd-and-11, Darnold tried connecting with Robby Anderson for the first down, but Anderson couldn't complete the catch before being taken down hard to the ground. The receiver was shaken up on the play and seemed to hurt his shoulder/collarbone, but was able to leave the field under his own power and eventually return to the game.

Back at the line of scrimmage, Winters was hit by another member of the offensive line and went down holding his shoulder area. He too was able to leave the field on his own after trainers came to check on him while down on the field.

SNY's Jeane Coakley talks with Jets Head Coach Adam Gase about the Jets-Giants rivalry while looking for improvement in Sam Darnold's play

SNY's Jeane Coakley talked to Jets head coach Adam Gase ahead of the team's rivalry game against the Giants on Sunday.

"I think we're really focused on us," Gase said. "You can feel it's a little different."

Gase also mentioned that he's impressed with how quarterback Sam Darnold has been improving at practice after a couple rough performances.

"It's probably just the way he's gone back to work," Gase said. "Finding ways to correct the mistakes that have been made. He's done a good job at practice, we just got to get it to carry over to games."

With the Giants and Jets playing each other on Sunday at MetLife Stadium, it will be the first time that quarterbacks Daniel Jones and Sam Darnold face off in the regular season.

Both QBs are just 22-years-old -- in fact, Jones is nine days older than Darnold -- and are already leading their teams as starters since being drafted. The Giants selected Jones with the No. 6 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, while the Jets took Darnold third overall in the 2018 NFL Draft.

ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky and CBS analyst Rich Gannon, both former NFL quarterbacks, spoke with Steve Serby of the NY Post to debate which quarterback looks better so far in their young careers.

The Giants and Jets are a combined 3-14, one year after going a combined 9-23, one year after going a combined 8-24. That's a 20-61 record over the last 2 ½ seasons, for a "winning" percentage of .246.

So no, the Giants and Jets don't match up particularly well with the rest of the professional football world right now. But how do they match up with each other?

In advance of their big showdown on Sunday at the Meadowlands, let's take a look:

The Jets are 1-7 and haven't played their best football. The same can be said for quarterback Sam Darnold.

Most expected a step forward for the second-year pro this year. Many observers of the team say Darnold has actually regressed instead of improving this year.

But Darnold himself doesn't think so, though. And neither does his head coach.

The Jets' fanbase is furious, if not outright disgusted. The frustration is building inside the Jets organization, too. They are now 1-7 in what they thought would be their first playoff season in nearly a decade, and they just lost to a team that might very well be trying to lose.

Given all those extremes, it's impossible to say for sure that Adam Gase won't be one-and-done as the Jets' head coach. When the losses pile up, fans revolt, and the wheels begin to come off, anything is possible.

Jets reacts to being 1-7 00:01:47
The Jets react to losing to the Dolphins. While they're disappointed in the loss, the team knows they have to find a way to bounce back

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive

There are a lot of reasons why this season has gone off the rails for the Jets, and a lot of excuses that Adam Gase could easily use to explain it.

But really, there's no excuse for this.

The Jets just lost a game, by a significant amount, to the worst team in the NFL -- or what was the worst team in the NFL -- and a team that many people around the league seriously believe are trying to lose so they can the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. The Jets' 26-18 loss in Miami has to rank right up there as one of the worst losses in franchise history.

Sam Darnold's second NFL season has been filled with obstacles. After a Week 2 mono diagnosis sidelined him for four weeks, he also had to deal with a toe injury once he was finally able to get back on the field.

And now, heading into the Jets' Week 9 matchup in Miami, Darnold is dealing with a left thumb injury, though the USC product believes he'll be good to go come Sunday.

"It's been good in practice so far, so I don't see any issues," Darnold said on Thursday.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Le'Veon Bell and Jamal Adams were on the trading block on Tuesday, and both could have been dealt if the price was right. Was a deal unlikely? Yes. But it was certainly possible. And it might be possible again in the offseason, too.

But the best-case scenario for the Jets in the offseason is exactly what happened on Tuesday, when both Bell and Adams learned they'd still be wearing Jets green. Because those two, along with quarterback Sam Darnold, are the three players the Jets should build around.

They can't dump them for future draft picks and subject their weary fan base to another rebuilding project again.

Adam Gase
Adam Gase

It was a crazy 48 hours leading up to the NFL trade deadline for the Jets, but the end result had many names floated on the trade market staying in the green and white for the rest of the season. Only Leonard Williams was traded away to the Giants in exchange for some draft capital.

Players like Jamal Adams, Le'Veon Bell, and Robby Anderson were reportedly names the Jets were taking calls on, with the most traction around Adams. But now that it's over, the Jets have to get their focus back on the Dolphins this week.

And that's exactly what head coach Adam Gase wants to do. The other stuff that transpired will be handled inside One Jets Drive.

The Jets took their second-straight loss in Week 8, a 29-15 defeat at the hands of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Safety Jamal Adams was particularly emotional following the game.

The oft-team leader took a lot of the blame for the loss.

Early in the game, Jags quarterback Gardner Minshew found wide receiver Keelan Cole for a six-yard touchdown pass. That play in particular was something Adams addressed emotionally

Gase on Le'Veon Bell's role 00:01:17
Adam Gase agrees Le'Veon Bell has to play a bigger role in the Jets' offense. There are a lot of factors impacting his effectiveness.

It's been a tough go for the Jets, but did quarterback Sam Darnold fool everyone?

Upon returning to the lineup against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 6 after a battle with mono, Darnold led the Jets to a 24-22 win. Since then, the Jets have lost back-to-back games and haven't looked their best.

But Darnold says no. That Week 6 outing is the team he knows the Jets are and can be, not the team that they've been the last two weeks.

Jets head coach Adam Gase revealed on Monday that QB Sam Darnold sustained a left thumb sprain during Sunday's loss to the Jaguars. But it won't mean Darnold will be sidelined once again this season.

Gase said Darnold will continue to have his thumb wrapped up, as it was on Sunday. He admitted it would "bother him all year," but the sophomore quarterback won't let that deter him from finishing out the season.

"I think for me the thumb is going to be a pain tolerance thing, which I should be fine with," Darnold told reporters Monday.

Sam Darnold was honest about what he thought of his past two weeks.

After last Monday's 33-0 loss to the New England Patriots, the second-year quarterback struggled in Sunday's 29-15 defeat at the hands of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

As the Jets (1-6) search for answers with the winless Miami Dolphins (0-6) on deck next Sunday in Week 9, Darnold expects better from himself after throwing three interceptions.

The Jets didn't just hire Adam Gase as their head coach. They gave him all sorts of power when they later fired GM Mike Maccagnan and hired Gase's friend and top choice Joe Douglas as the replacement. He is, in many ways, the leading voice in the organization and perhaps the most trusted and influential one.

And it's all because of this one thing: The Jets believed he was the right guy to shepherd Sam Darnold into the future.

Jets dejected after 29-15 loss 00:01:46
Adam Gase, Sam Darnold and Jamal Adams were all very honest after the team fell to 1-6 this season. Gase says no one can change it but them

Sam Darnold may not have been seeing ghosts this time, but he had plenty of reasons to be scared.

The Jets' offensive line was atrocious, again, in the Jets' 29-15 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Darnold was constantly on the run, was sacked eight times, and they weren't much better in the running game where Le'Veon Bell barely had any room to run.

The result was another offensive disaster. The Jets scored on a 93-yard drive on their opening possession - their first opening-drive touchdown in 31 tries. The rest of the game they only had 120 more yards for a pathetic total of 213.

It's a mess.

"He was great this week," Gase said. "Once we got through Tuesday, I'm sure that wasn't easy for him, but he was asking a lot of good questions on how he can fix things. And then once we got to Wednesday, he was good to go. He just focused on doing his job."

The second-year quarterback had been dealing with a toe injury that he suffered against New England. Darnold had a small procedure earlier this week to remove the toenail, after it had been stepped on in the game.

Darnold is moving past Patriots 00:01:12
Sam Darnold and Jamal Adams talk about how the team will move past the Patriots and focus on the Jaguars.

Sam Darnold, like the rest of the Jets, is looking to put last week's disappointing loss to the Patriots behind him.

As the second-year quarterback gets ready for Sunday's matchup in Jacksonville, he does so dealing with a toe injury that he suffered against New England.

"It got stepped on and a little but harsher than you usually get stepped on so, it hurt, and we had to do some things to the toe this week, but it felt really good in practice," Darnold said on Thursday.

"They're making sure it's protected and they're making sure my toe and my foot feels normal and making sure the cleat feels normal to me like it usually does but also making sure that it's protected."

When the Jets released their updated injury report on Thursday, there was one new name on the list.

The addition was wide receiver Jamison Crowder, who popped up as a limited participant in Thursday's practice due to a knee injury. Crowder was not among the injured players that head coach Adam Gase mentioned before practice, meaning the injury must be a brand new one.

Crowder leads the Jets this season in both receptions (32) and receiving yards (298). In his first season with Gang Green, Crowder seems to have quickly developed a rapport with Sam Darnold. In the three games Darnold has started this season, Crowder has collected 24 of his 32 catches and 223 of his 298 receiving yards. If he is unable to play on Sunday. Crowder's absence could be a significant one against the Jaguars' defense.

Sam Darnold suffered another odd injury, Adam Gase revealed Wednesday morning, but the head coach said that the quarterback "should be good to go" by Sunday afternoon.

Two days after the Jets' 33-0 loss against the New England Patriots on ESPN's Monday Night Football, Gase revealed ahead of Week 8 at the Jacksonville Jaguars that Darnold underwent a procedure to a toenail removed.

Gase added that Darnold would be reevaluated after individual and 7-on-7 action Wednesday afternoon, but the practices before Sunday's 1 p.m. ET kickoff at TIAA Bank Field should get the Jets' signal caller back up to speed.

Much has been made in the last 24-plus hours about Sam Darnold's "seeing ghosts" comment that was picked up by the microphone he was wearing and aired on the ESPN Monday Night Football broadcast.

And while some Jets, including Le'Veon Bell and head coach Adam Gase were upset that ESPN aired the comments, some former NFL QBs went into more detail on what that term actually means for a quarterback, and how it's far more common among young QBs than many fans might think.

One of those former QBs was Brett Favre, who went in-depth on his SiriusXM Radio show on what it actually means for a quarterback to "see ghosts."

Coming off Monday night's blowout loss to the Patriots, Jets quarterback Sam Darnold joined ESPN's The Michael Kay Show to explain what exactly happened at MetLife Stadium.

"...It was mostly mental," Darnold said when asked if they mistakes made were mental or physical. "It was stuff we practiced throughout the week...we did well in the Dallas game taking practice into Sunday. We didn't take practice to Monday. I didn't do it. My whole offense, as far as I know, didn't do it.

"We pride ourselves on not making mental mistakes and we did a lot of that [Monday] night."

If the Jets elect to become sellers leading up to the NFL trade deadline, could Robby Anderson be headed for a new team?

According to a report from Bleacher Report's Connor Rogers, there is interest around the league for Anderson's services.

Rogers notes that teams called the Jets last year attempting to trade for the wide receiver, but the Jets, led by GM Mike Maccagnan, had no intentions of moving him.

It will certainly be interesting to see what the price for starting wide receivers will be at this year's trade deadline on October 29 at 4 PM. The 49ers got things started on Tuesday, acquiring Emmanuel Sanders and a fifth round pick from the Broncos in exchange for a third round pick and a fourth round pick in next year's draft.

Adam Gase
Adam Gase

Monday night's game against the Patriots is one Sam Darnold would love to forget as quickly as possible. And even though he may want to burn the tape, head coach Adam Gase knows his young quarterback must watch his mistakes to hopefully make sure this result never sees the light of day again.

"We have to learn from this game," Gase told reporters during a conference call on Monday. "It's a game where it's very painful and frustrating to go through. You have to take as much from what you can as far as to learn from mistakes made, learn from the experience, and put yourself in position to where that doesn't happen again."

It was Darnold's worst start of his early career by far. He finished with only 86 yards on 11-for-32 throwing with a career-high four interceptions. His quarterback rating was 3.6...

Gase unhappy with ESPN mic'd up 00:01:00
Jets coach Adam Gase was not happy that ESPN aired Sam Darnold's "ghost" comment, saying "it bothers me, it bothers the organization."

As the Jets were getting mauled by the Patriots on Monday night at MetLife Stadium, a mic'd up Sam Darnold was heard on the sidelines saying that he was "seeing ghosts out there."

That comment from Darnold, with the Jets down by the score of 24-0 in the first half, was fair game to be aired. But head coach Adam Gase said Tuesday that he and the rest of the organization were not happy about it.

"Yeah, I think we'll be looking into that pretty hard," Gase said during a conference call. "That was one of those things that was really disappointing to hear about after the game. I don't know if I've ever seen that where somebody that was mic'd up was basically -- a comment like that was allowed to be aired. It bothers me. It bothers the organization. I mean, obviously we're gonna be looking hard into our cooperation (with mic'd up players) going forward."

In the middle of the disaster, with the walls coming down around his team, Adam Gase admitted he was worried about his young, franchise quarterback. This was the 16th start of Sam Darnold's career and, by far, the worst.

And Gase was worried that the beating might leave Darnold shell-shocked, that this nightmare could linger into next week and beyond.

Jamal Adams fired up after loss 00:01:35
New York Jets safety Jamal Adams was upset after the Jets 33-0 loss to the Patriots and knows they need to fix things heading into Week 8.

After an AFC Offensive Player of the Week performance, Jets quarterback Sam Darnold followed that up with possibly the worst performance of his short career.

Darnold finished the game 11-of-32 for 86 yards, zero touchdowns, four interceptions and a fumble. Darnold also batted a high snap from Ryan Kalil out of the back of the end zone for a Patriots safety.

The second-year quarterback had a 3.6 passer rating for the night.

Leonard Williams 1-on-1 00:02:05
New York Jets defensive lineman Leonard Williams speak to SNY's Jeane Coakley about the Jets tough 33-0 loss to the Patriots.

After his second interception of the game, with the Jets already trailing, 24-0, Sam Darnold was catching his breath on the sidelines, lamenting the blitzes that kept breaking through the offensive line. It was clear he was either rattled or, at the least, confused by what he was seeing.

That's when the ESPN mic caught him saying "I'm seeing ghosts."

That's not a good sign for a quarterback, but it's clear that's what was happening. He was under so much pressure in the pocket, forced to deal with pass rushers coming from everywhere, he couldn't get an accurate read on the coverage. He was seeing things that weren't there, and not seeing things that were there.

Jets' Robby Anderson
Jets' Robby Anderson

After a frustrating start to the season, Jets WR Robby Anderson broke out in a big way last week.

With 3:46 left in the second quarter, Anderson got behind the Cowboys defense for a 92-yard touchdown to give the Jets a 14-3 lead. They clung on for a 24-22 victory, improving their record to 1-4 as they seek to defy the critics and get themselves back into the postseason hunt.

Coming just one play after a fourth down stop by rookie Quinnen Williams, the Anderson play saw him throw cornerback Chidobe Awuzie off-balance with a double-move, as he streaked down the field. He tracked Sam Darnold's deep throw all the way into his hands at midfield, catching the ball in stride and racing into the clear before the deep safety could get across.

Since getting healthy, Jets WR Demaryius Thomas has been a solid receiving option for Gang Green, especially in the last two weeks. With Sam Darnold back against the Cowboys, he saw four catches for 62 yards to help the Jets to their first win of the season.

But this wasn't where Thomas expected to be putting up yards this season.

Thomas was with the Patriots this preseason, teaming up with Tom Brady and his former Broncos head coach in Josh McDaniels, who serves as New England's offensive coordinator. Thomas was cut before the start of the season, but he quickly re-signed after rookie WR N'Keal Harry went on the IR.

The Jets and Patriots will square off for the second time this season Monday night in an extremely short span, as the two teams saw each other just a few weeks ago during Week 3.

The Patriots hosted the Jets in the last time out and handled their business, leaving Gillette Stadium with a 3--0 record, but just based on the substitution of one player this week, Monday night could potentially be a whole different type of ballgame.

The Jets of course will be in the hands of Sam Darnold this time around, as the second-year quarterback was out with mono for the first time these two teams met this season. Luke Falk got his first career start in Week 3 with Darnold absent and struggled throughout, finishing 12 of 22 for 98 yards and an interception.
