Joe Flacco will enter the 2020 NFL season in a way that he's never done so before - as a backup.

A starter for 11 years in Baltimore and then one more in Denver (though a neck injury ultimate paved the way for Drew Lock to take over), Flacco will enter training camp with the Jets as the backup behind Sam Darnold.

The 35-year-old former Super Bowl Champion knows things will be different for him in 2020, but he's ready to take the next step in his career.

Joe Flacco signed a one-year deal with the Jets last week, knowing full well that he was joining the team to be the backup to Sam Darnold

But for the 35-year-old Super Bowl-winning quarterback, his deal with the Jets is a chance to get back to playing the game he loves.

Flacco had neck surgery in April, after playing eight games of what turned out to be his only season with the Denver Broncos. Now, he's anxiously awaiting to do whatever he can for Gang Green, though he knows his recovery still has a quite some time to go.

Jets QB Sam Darnold is entering his third season in the league and Giants QB Daniel Jones is entering his second. Both have been quite impressive, but they are behind rookie Joe Burrow (and some other questionably-ranked QBs) on NBC Sports Philadelphia's ranking of all 32 QBs in the NFL.

Darnold, who threw for 3,024 yards with 19 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 13 starts during a season that was interrupted by mono, was ranked 23rd, with Baker Mayfield No. 22.

Jones, who threw for 3,027 yards with 24 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 12 starts for a rebuilding Giants team, was ranked No. 26 -- just behind Ryan Fitzpatrick (No. 25) and Teddy Bridgewater (No. 24).

Sam Darnold is entrenched as the Jets' starting quarterback, but finding a veteran backup for him seemed to still be a need for the team.

Now, it looks like the the Jets have found their answer in former Ravens and Broncos quarterback Joe Flacco, as his agent announced that Flacco has signed a one-year deal with the Jets.

SNY Insider Ralph Vacchiano has confirmed that Flacco's deal is worth $1.5 million, though he could earn another $3 million in incentives.

It has been speculation for a couple of years now, but Frank Gore doesn't listen to those who believes he is going to call it quits. He's had a great career -- Hall of Fame worthy -- but he's just not done yet.

That's why Gore signed a one-year deal with the Jets this year, setting him up to play his 16th year in the NFL. It wasn't that hard of a decision to make, as he told media on Thursday during a Zoom conference call that he knew from his play last season he still had something left in the tank.

His son, Frank Gore Jr., thought so as well.

ESPN's Mike Greenberg is sick of the Sam Darnold disrespect.

During "Get Up" on Wednesday, Greenberg asked his panelists Tim Hasselbeck and Domonique Foxworth who will be the best quarterback in the AFC East in three years. Greenberg believes there is only one true answer, but he is astounded to here something else.

At first, Foxworth and Greeny agreed that Bills QB Josh Allen, who Hasselbeck picked, won't be that guy. He statistically was the least accurate quarterback last season with a 58.8 completion percentage.

By all indications, general manager Joe Douglas and the Jets' personnel staff addressed many of the team's areas of need this offseason. Particularly on the offensive line and at wide receiver, the Jets will have a bit of a different look in 2020.

But looking ahead to the 2020 season, there are a handful of players whose play will dictate whether the Jets will improve on last year's 7-9 record, or if they'll fall flat in Adam Gase's second season.

With Tom Brady now calling Tampa Bay home, the AFC East could be up for grabs, but can the Jets capitalize? The answer to that question may very will hinge on the play of these five players…

The Jets continue to hold their virtual offseason program via Zoom meetings, but that isn't stopping quarterback Sam Darnold from getting some throws in at the beach.

In a video posted by former NFL quarterback and now noted passing instructor Jordan Palmer, Darnold is seen working on his footwork before airing one out, all while seemingly still practicing proper social distancing.

It was reported in late March that Darnold was quarantining in southern California while working out with Bills quarterback Josh Allen and new Redskins quarterback Kyle Allen as well.

The offseason roster-building is over, for the most part. What you currently see with your favorite NFL team is likely what you're going to get.

So what will you get in the AFC East in 2020? And how do the Jets stack up?

Here, with the help of some NFL sources, is a look at what and how those teams did, and what their outlook is for the (hopefully) upcoming season. They are listed in my projected order of finish in the AFC East:

The NFL recently released the schedule for the 2020 season, with the caveat that things are flexible between now and Week 1 (and beyond) due to the uncertainty surrounding all activity in the United States due to the coronavirus pandemic.

While the league currently plans to start the season on time, it's very likely that a coronavirus vaccine will not be ready by then. Dr. Anthony Fauci said Tuesday that a vaccine would "more likely than not" be ready within a year or two.

With the preseason scheduled to begin in roughly three months, Jets QB Sam Darnold was asked Monday whether he was apprehensive about returning before a vaccine is available.

So many questions … Here are a few more you asked me in this week's edition of the SNY Jets mailbag:

Why haven't the Jets gone after Clowney? -- @BuddhaTaino

Money. Actually, it's more about player value. Jadeveon Clowney may be the best pass rusher on the market, but he wanted more than $20 million per year on a long-term contract, and then reportedly lowered his demands into the $17-18 million range. So far no one thinks he's worth that -- certainly not on a long-term deal. The Jets clearly don't.

Joe Douglas has completely retooled the Jets' offensive line this offseason, but could another upgrade be in the works?

The New Orleans Saints released three-time Pro Bowl guard Larry Warford on Friday, ending what was a very successful tenure with the the team.

The 28-year-old is now a free agent after three straight Pro Bowl appearances with the Saints. He was also extremely durable in New Orleans, missing just four games in three seasons while becoming one of the elite right guards in the NFL.

As if the Jets don't have enough problems already, their 2020 schedule doesn't give them much of a break. Their opponents had a 136-119-1 record last season (a .533 winning percentage). They'll play seven games against playoff teams, including both teams that played in Super Bowl LIV.

Overall, they have the second-toughest schedule in the entire league.

When the Jets signed George Fant to a three-year deal this offseason, the assumption was that he would likely slide into the starting left tackle spot for Gang Green.

A small amount of uncertainty was added to the starting left tackle job when the Jets used the 11th overall pick to take Louisville's Mekhi Becton, a player the team likely views as their left tackle of the future.

But on a video conference call with members of the media on Thursday, Fant explained he left Seattle to be able to play left tackle and he'd feel comfortable as the starter on Sam Darnold's blindside, though he's versatile enough to play the right side if that's what the team decides.

When Jets QB Sam Darnold was drafted back in 2018, there was always going to be a comparison that followed him throughout his NFL career with the other highly-touted quarterbacks that were taken in that class.

Other than Darnold, Ravens QB Lamar Jackson, Bills QB Josh Allen and Browns QB Baker Mayfield -- the first overall pick in that draft class -- make up the top four options from that year. Josh Rosen was also selected by the Cardinals, but since Kyler Murray came in as the No. 1 pick last year, he has found himself struggling in Miami.

But now that two seasons have gone by, where does Darnold stack up among the rest of his peers?

Joe Douglas' first full offseason with the Jets has been an eventful one.

After vowing to prioritize building around quarterback Sam Darnold, Douglas has delivered, though perhaps more so on the line than in terms of playmakers. Still, the Jets have seemingly addressed some previous weaknesses and have also added depth throughout the roster.

Unquestionably, there is still work to be done, but the Jets' 90-man roster certainly seems to be improved from the group that disappointed in 2019 with a 7-9 record, good for third in the AFC East.

The NFL is in a bit of a better position than the other professional sports leagues in this country during the coronavirus pandemic: The league already completed its 2019-2020 season, and only its offseason programs and NFL Draft have truly been affected to date.

The league will be releasing its 2020-21 season schedule for each team on Thursday, and it's expected to be business as usual: a 17-week, 16-game schedule with bye weeks and all. However, it's hard to imagine the league actually starting on time in September.

Sacrifices might have to be made by teams, and one of the main ones is potentially playing without fans in the seats. It's a reality that Jets QB Sam Darnold understands very well.

To fans and experts alike, Jets GM Joe Douglas had a great first draft, as he filled numerous holes on his roster and did so with some steals as well. For QB Sam Darnold, he's particularily excited about Douglas' first two choices named that he called off the draft board.

The first is Louisville's Mekhi Becton, the massive tackle that dazzled at the NFL Scouting Combine and fell to the Jets at No. 11 overall. Becton said he and Douglas had a conversation about their Richmond roots, and had a feeling if he fell to them, he would be taken.

Given Douglas' mission to revamp the offensive line to help Darnold, Becton was an obvious choice when he was on the board, and Darnold said on Tuesday during a conference call with the New York media that he can't wait to stand behind him.

After watching who the Jets added this offseason through free agency and the NFL Draft, Jets QB Sam Darnold is confident enough to say the playoffs are certainly in reach for his team.

But that's if they put in the hard work to get there.

We still have a long way to go. We have meetings we haven't finished yet, guys still learning the playbook…Right now we're just working on ourselves and making sure we're good to go."

Now that the 2020 NFL Draft has come and gone, the Jets still have one big question lingering over their heads: What to do about the Jamal Adams situation?

Undoubtedly, Adams is one of the top young players in the NFL and the most talented player on the Jets. But the star safety has repeatedly gone public with his desire for a new contract, despite the fact that the Jets still have plenty of time to get something figured out.

So should the Jets re-sign Adams to a long-term deal, or has he become too much of a distraction -- to the point where they should move on?

Last year was supposed to be the big moment for Sam Darnold, when he built on all the promise he showed as a rookie and took the next step to join the NFL's elite. Then mono happened. Then the Jets fell apart. And the quarterback's breakout season turned into a bit of a sophomore slump.

That has pushed Darnold's arrival date to … well, now.

This is the year - or at least it should be - when the world finds out if the Jets are right about their 22-year-old quarterback. He's been very good through his first two years, with many flashes of brilliance. But the Jets traded three second-round picks to draft him third overall in 2018 because they believed he was going to be great.

Bent, theJetsBlog.com Follow on Twitter

At the end of his first draft as Jets general manager, Joe Douglas walked away with nine new additions to the roster, not including any undrafted free agent signings which will no doubt be finalized in the coming days.

Douglas will obviously be hoping that first round choice Mekhi Becton will be able to step in and contribute right off the bat, presumably as the starting left tackle. However, what about the other eight players they selected? What expectations should Jets fans have for each player's role in 2020?

Wide receiver Denzel Mims seems likely to have a role, especially with the Jets' lack of proven depth at the position. However, it might take him a while to get used to a pro-style system and become adept at running the full route tree because he played in a spread offense at Baylor. He therefore may not start, although he could have a specific role -- one that will perhaps involve him being a red zone threat.

As had been widely anticipated since the end of last season, Joe Douglas opted to use his first draft pick as Jets general manager on an offensive tackle.

With Andrew Thomas and Jedrick Wills Jr. both off the board, Douglas opted to select Mekhi Becton from Louisville over Iowa's Tristan Wirfs with the 11th overall pick.

Becton is the offensive lineman from this draft who arguably has the highest uspside. However, it's generally accepted that there are aspects of his game that are raw, so he'll need to develop better technique before he can realize that potential.

The Jets' draft history is so bad that Joe Douglas' honeymoon figures to be a short one. He can't possibly be instantly judged on his first draft class, but that's probably exactly what some skeptical fans are going to do.

They are hoping for success, or at least a first round that doesn't make them scream in agony and throw up their hands. They want a first-round pick they can be proud of, rally around, and feel confident that it was a good one. Image may not be everything when it comes to the long-term success of a prospect, but Douglas -- who holds the 11th overall pick on Thursday night -- is about to learn that first impressions matter, especially in New York.

So how can he make his first dive into the shark-infested waters of Jets draft history a good one -- or, at the very least, a safe one? Here's some advice on what he and the Jets need to do to make sure the first round is a success.

NFL Network's lead Draft analyst, Daniel Jeremiah, is not only well-versed in the nation's top prospects leading up to this year's draft on Thursday night. He also knows how Jets GM Joe Douglas thinks during these drafts as well.

"Joe's a PhD in [Ravens EVP] Ozzie Newsome's way of scouting and looking at players," Jeremiah told the New York Post's Steve Serby in an in depth Q&A. "I think you'll see a lot of the same types of players and the same types of leadership there. He was very close with Ozzie. Ozzie was definitely a mentor to Joe, so I think you'll see a lot of that in his DNA as a GM."

The Jets would certainly love that to be the case. Newsome paved the way for the Ravens' Super Bowl XXXV and XLVII teams as GM, and Douglas could use that knowledge from Newsome to do the same in New York. It all starts with his first draft.

If the Jets are going to draft an offensive lineman at No. 11, many expect they'll be left with the last available of the Big Four tackles. And there's an increasing belief that the last one standing will be Louisville's massive Mekhi Becton.

The 6-7, 364-pounder would literally be a huge pick for the Jets, and if he's the last of the top four still on the board, he could be difficult for them to pass up.
