Jets dream offseason wishlist 00:00:18
SNY's New York Jets analysts pick each of their top three free agents they want the Jets to sign this offseason.

The Jets have their new head coach in place, and as Adam Gase puts together his staff, the next big step is what Gang Green will do this offseason to improve their 53-man roster.

Jets GM Mike Maccagnan will have almost $100 million ($99,387,909 projected by OverTheCap.com) to work with in free agency, and to explore trades.

So who should they go after? The SNY Jets crew gave their dream offseason wishlist for the Jets, as they look ahead to the free agent class and players that could be on the market:

The day the Cleveland Browns named Gregg Williams their interim head coach after firing Hue Jackson, their former defensive coordinator made one thing perfectly clear: The Browns were lucky to have him.

"Since I left Buffalo (in 2003), I had 11 letters to interview for head coaching jobs," Williams said. "Four of them, I didn't even have to interview. Just show up and sign the contract."

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | ArchiveTodd Bowles came to the Jets with the reputation of being one of the best defensive minds in football. And in his first season, it was easy to see why. After that, it was all a steady roll downhill towards the Jets becoming one of the worst defenses in the league.

That's startling considering how they had invested in their defense. For eight straight years, before they took quarterback Sam Darnold, they had taken a defensive player in the first round of the draft. And they had spent big money on defenders in free agency like corners Trumaine Johnson and Morris Claiborne as well as linebacker Avery Williamson.

Yet they still had no pass rush and they wore down late in games. The Jets' defense was a remarkable group of underachievers.

There is a lot Jets QB Sam Darnold likes about his new head coach, Adam Gase.

Particularly, what Gase can do with the Jets offense.

The 21-year-old quarterback told the Jets team website on Friday that he is "excited" about the new hire and added what he expects from the offense in the first season under Gase.

Former Cowboys quarterback and current CBS NFL analyst Tony Romo sees some similarities between Jets quarterback Sam Darnold and future Pro Football Hall of Famer Peyton Manning.

Considering what Manning was able to accomplish with Adam Gase, the newest Jets head coach, that bodes well for Darnold.

Romo praised the Jets for hiring Gase and believes Darnold can take his game to the next level with Gase.

Those are two of the greatest quarterbacks who ever lived, and combined they may know more about the position and offensive football than any two people in history.

Manning once called new Jets coach Adam Gase "the smartest guy I know."

What does hiring Adam Gase mean? 00:01:02
What does new Jets head coach Adam Gase mean for Sam Darnold's future? Will he help the young QB mature?

The Jets had goals they wanted to reach when hiring their 19th head coach in franchise history. They were looking for a candidate with prior head coaching experience, and in particular, an offensive mind. Developing quarterbacks would also be a plus, too.

And the organization believed that man was former Dolphins head coach Adam Gase.

News broke Wednesday night that Gase is to be named the Jets' new head coach, and they did so knowing he could be a good mentor to young QB Sam Darnold. The rookie this season solidified his role as the quarterback of the future, and it will be up to Gase to continue that development, and hopefuly tap into his strengths to make him and the offense a dangerous group...

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive: Before there was a Sean McVay, the young offensive whiz kid-coach that every team suddenly wants to copy, Adam Gase was that object of everyone's affections. He was the next offensive genius, the hottest assistant on the coaching carousel.

Just three years ago, when he was only 36, he was McVay before anyone even knew of McVay.

The luster may have faded from his star in the last three years as he went 23-25 with a somewhat dysfunctional Miami Dolphins organization. But the Jets were undeterred by the mess he left in Miami.

Not everyone believes that the next Jets head coach needs to be some sort of offensive-minded guru.

Charley Casserly, a former GM with the Redskins and Texans and consultant who helped the Jets hire Todd Bowles and Mike Maccagnan, says there are more important factors into searching for a head coach.

"The single most important thing you have to do is find a leader, a leader of men, OK?" Casserly said in a Q&A with Daryl Slater of NJ.com. "A guy who can communicate, a guy who can evaluate -- evaluate coaches, evaluate players. A guy who manage -- manage the players and manage the coaches. Those are the critical factors."

Jets CEO Christopher Johnson sees the Jets as a "really good spot" for a new head coach. They've got a franchise quarterback, "some great young players." And, of course, they're in New York.

"Some people will be attracted to (that), maybe some won't," Johnson said. "But if you make it here, you're a freakin' legend."

That's true. Whoever leads the Jets to their first Super Bowl in 50-plus years will be a sports immortal. That possibility could be attractive for some. Overall, the Jets can offer a pretty attractive situation regardless for a new coach.

The Jets head coaching search is in full swing and Adam Gase is up next to be interviewed for the position on Friday.

With Gase in the picture, he joins another young, offensive-minded coach in Kliff Kingsbury among the candidates the Jets are interviewing.

Both are thought to be offensive gurus who could help the development of Sam Darnold. Kingsbury already has the blessing of Jets Pro Bowl safety Jamal Adams, but there are plenty of pros and cons to hiring both these men. SNY's Ralph Vacchiano takes a deeper look into weighing these two options:

At the end of a rough season in Jacksonville, it became increasingly apparent the relationship between the team and running back Leonard Fournette had become fractious. A few days ago, Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone confirmed the Jaguars have acted to void guarantees within Fournette's rookie contract following the latest in a series of troubling incidents.

Naturally, these events have fuelled speculation that the Jaguars will look to sever ties with Fournette with Jay Glazer recently reporting they might be looking to blow up their roster. With the Jets expected to target Le'Veon Bell in the offseason, some have suggested that Fournette could be a lower-cost alternative, or at least a viable fall-back plan, as they look to upgrade their running back position. However, there are reasons to believe the Jets should look elsewhere.

Takeaways from Gettleman on Eli 00:01:25
Did Giants GM Dave Gettleman tip the Giants' hand for who would start under center in 2019?

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Dave Gettleman did everything he could to not commit to Eli Manning as the Giants quarterback in 2019 in his press conference on Wednesday. He made it clear from the start he wasn't ready to answer that question, and he followed up by ducking every attempt.

But maybe the better way to read his answers is that he didn't decommit to Manning as the quarterback of the Giants either. In fact, he acknowledged that the soon-to-be-38-year-old "still can make the NFL throws. You know what I'm saying? He's still got it." And Manning's stats - 4,299 yards, 21 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and a career-high completion percentage of 66 percent -- "wasn't too shabby either," Gettleman said.

Sam Darnold started his rookie campaign with a bang and then went through the roller coaster that was his first full season in the NFL. The Jets' rookie QB entered the offseason with his head held high and reflected back on his first year in an article he penned for NewYorkJets.com

"It feels like forever ago my first pass went the other way for six in Detroit," said Darnold, who started his career off with an interception return for a touchdown. "Actually, after I threw that pass, I think I was smiling as I was walking back to the sideline. I was just like, 'Man, of course this happens to me.' It's the worst possible thing that could've happened, but I was really proud of the way we responded."

The Jets crushed the Lions 48-17, as Darnold finished with 198 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

Two days into the Jets' search for a new coach, the "extensive" field of candidates that CEO Christopher Johnson has compiled is beginning to emerge. It so far includes three assistants they've requested permission to interview, two former NFL head coaches and maybe a third. They've also shown an interest in dipping into the college ranks, where they will interview one former head coach, they've done background work on one big name, and were shot down by another.

Fresh off the market with a new contract extension, Jets wide receiver Quincy Enunwa knows what qualities he's looking for in New York's next head coach.

The Jets signed Enunwa to a four-year, $36 million deal after the 26-year-old wideout spent four seasons under recently fired head coach Todd Bowles. Enunwa said he didn't want to see Bowles lose his job after the Jets went four consecutive seasons without a playoff berth. But he's aware of the type of head coach his team needs to turn its luck around.

"I just want somebody who can help us win," Enunwa said. "No nonsense. [Someone who] can really crack down. Keep everybody on a standard."

In his first ever meeting with Tom Brady, Jets rookie Sam Darnold was less effective than he's been over the past few weeks. However, in tough circumstances, his performance in New England was nothing to be ashamed of, despite the fact the Jets were blown out by 35 points.

Jets lose 38-3 to Patriots 00:01:27
It's clear to the Jets that they need more after 38-3 loss to Patriots.

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- It's over.

The Jets' disappointing season came to an inglorious end on Sunday, with an ugly, 38-3 loss to the New England Patriots - a loss that almost certainly marked the end of the Todd Bowles era too. As SNY and many others have reported, he's expected to be fired in the next 24 hours. He knows it, too.

The Jets, in the end, played hard over the last month of the season, but they still lost nine of their last 10 games. And their 4-12 record was remarkably the worst of Bowles' four seasons. He's gone 24-40, and since starting his career with a 10-5 record through the first 16 weeks of his first season, his teams have gone only 14-35.

THE GAME

The Jets (4-11) against the New England Patriots (10-5) at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on Sunday, Dec. 30, at 1 p.m. ET.

THE WEATHER

It'll be cold, with temperatures barely above freezing and lots of clouds to make it feel even colder. It'll be dry at least, so that's something.

WHAT IT MEANS

A Patriots win would be the best thing for everyone. They are playing for a first-round bye in the playoffs, and the Jets still have a shot at the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft and a shot at Ohio State pass-rusher Nick Bosa.

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive: FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Todd Bowles will take the field one last time as the Jets head coach on Sunday afternoon against the New England Patriots. And even a win against the Jets' most-hated rivals won't be enough to get him another shot.

To no one's surprise, Bowles is expected to be fired after the final game of the season, according to multiple sources familiar with the Jets' plans. That's been expected for more than a month, and the only mystery at this point is whether they'll do it Sunday night, or wait until Monday morning.

The Jets actually scheduled a press conference for Bowles on Monday at noon, but that appears to be only an attempt to portray their schedule as business-as-usual. Even the 55-year-old Bowles has told people he's aware that he will likely be fired within 24 hours after the season ends, according to a source.

To Bowles' credit he has had the team playing hard over the last month, although the team has still only won four games and it seems unlikely that this will be enough to satisfy CEO Christopher Johnson's "progress" mandate.

Over the course of the season, Bowles has had several highly-publicized missteps, many of which continued patterns that had developed over the course of his first three seasons. Let's review some of the main ones.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Sam Darnold hasn't had many weapons to work with in the Jets' offense, but he did have one receiver he relied on in big spots. When Quincy Enunwa was healthy, he was the 21-year-old's go-to guy when he needed a play to be made.

And yet, the No. 3 pick is optimistic in the future after what he's learned this season.

Bent, theJetsBlog.com Follow on Twitter: With the Jets reportedly weighing the candidates to replace head coach Todd Bowles, it's widely viewed as an inevitability that they will seek a so-called offensive mastermind and look to build around Sam Darnold.

With potential candidate John Harbaugh out of the running after the Ravens announced they will be retaining him, reports have so far centered on the recently-fired former Packers head coach Mike McCarthy and Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh.

Which potential new head coaches would be best for Darnold's development?

Jets offseason preview 00:01:49
A look at the running back and wide receiver position. Will the Jets fill needs via draft, free agency or trade?

The Jets have now gone eight straight seasons without a trip to the playoffs, and their misery really runs deeper than that. In the last 12 seasons, spanning three coaches, they've had four winning seasons, and they've won double-digit games only twice.

Everyone knows the Jets haven't been to the Super Bowl in 50 years, but the bigger problem is they haven't even been a threat to get there very often. In the last 32 years they've had double-digit win totals six times and they've had back-to-back winning seasons only five times.

They may be 14-33 over the last three years and 24-39 under Todd Bowles, but the bigger picture is the entire franchise has been stuck in a cycle of mediocrity-at-best that they just can't figure out how to break.

In his final home game of the season, Sam Darnold wasn't quite able to add out-dueling Aaron Rodgers to his résumé, but it was more down to defensive lapses than anything Darnold did wrong. Statistically, he had his best game of the year with 341 yards and three touchdowns, continuing to build momentum as we head to the end of the season.

Jets rookie quarterback Sam Darnold outdueled the Packers' Aaron Rodgers for most of Sunday's game.

But even though Rodgers finished with more passing yards and led Green Bay to three late touchdown drives, including the game-winning one in overtime, the Super Bowl champion Rodgers praised the 21-year-old Darnold after the Jets lost 44-38 at MetLife Stadium.

"I like his game," Rodgers said, according to the New York Daily News' Manish Mehta. "He threw the ball really well. He's moving around making throws on the run. I think he has a bright future."

Sam Darnold may not have been the best quarterback on the Meadowlands field on Sunday. But his first showdown with Aaron Rodgers wasn't a total mismatch, either.

And that says a ton about how far the Jets' 21-year-old rookie quarterback has come.

In yet another sign that the Jets made the right choice and have found their long-awaited franchise quarterback, Darnold nearly went toe-to-toe with all-pro Rodgers before the Jets fell to the Packers in overtime, 44-38. Darnold was brilliant, completing 24 of 35 passes for 341 yards and three touchdowns. And that was enough to keep pace most of the way with Rodgers, who was 37 of 55 for 442 yards and two touchdowns, including a 16-yarder to Davonte Adams in overtime to win the game.

The Jets will have a high pick in the 2019 NFL Draft and more than $100 million in salary cap room to spend in free agency, so they have plenty of ammunition to fill the many holes in their lineup. GM Mike Maccagnan has never been shy about trying to improve the team by making trades, either.

So it should be a busy offseason for the Jets, and a critical one for Maccagnan. There is a real chance for this team to get better, to push itself into the ranks of playoff contenders. But they'll need to find a pass rusher, a running back, a No. 1 receiver, and help along the offensive line, too.

What is the best way for Maccagnan to fill each of the Jets' needs -- through the draft, via free agency, or with a trade? Here's a look at each gaping hole and the best way for the Jets to plug it.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The Jets figure to make a huge offseason push for the second consecutive year to try to sign the biggest star on the free agent market.

But for the second consecutive year, it looks like that player may not want to sign with them.

Running back Le'Veon Bell, who is expected to become a free agent on March 13, "has his eyes on" the Indianapolis Colts, according to a source familiar with Bell's plans. The source, who has spoken to Bell, said the free agent hasn't ruled out signing with the Jets or any team that pursues him, but the Colts, with quarterback Andrew Luck and perhaps more than $120 million in salary cap room, seem to be at the "top of his list."

This holiday season, "Sam-ta Claus" came to town.

Dressing up as jolly ole' Saint Nick, Jets rookie QB Sam Darnold traveled to the mall with Bleacher Report's Adam Lefkoe and Chris Simms to sit in Santa's chair to ask kids what they wanted for Christmas.

Some children asked for a skateboard or Nerf gun, while a couple asked for another New York rookie's jersey in Giants RB Saquon Barkley...
