Bent, theJetsBlog.com Follow on Twitter: Jets QB Sam Darnold's performance during Week 3's loss to the Browns was frustrating, especially early on. The Jets ran an extremely conservative gameplan, which enabled them to build a lead but also seemed to prevent Darnold from being able to get into any kind of rhythm. They seemed reluctant to trust their protection, so Darnold was primarily asked to make quick tosses and throws on the move.

It wasn't until late in the first half that he made what you might call a "normal" throw where he dropped back into the pocket, scanned the field and found a receiver -- and that was just a short gain to Chris Herndon in the flat.

Let's look at some specific examples before we draw conclusions...

The Jets blew a 14-0 lead and lost 21-17 to the Browns on Thursday night. Let's break down how each unit performed.

Quarterbacks

Rookie Sam Darnold had his worst game so far, although he was arguably somewhat hamstrung by an overly conservative game plan. He completed 15 of 31 passes for 169 yards and threw two interceptions.

Sam Darnold did not have his finest game on Thursday night. And it looked a lot worse compared to what Baker Mayfield was doing for the other team.

In the first matchup of the first two quarterbacks taken in the 2018 draft, Mayfield won in a landslide, coming in late in the first half for the injured Tyrod Taylor and sending a jolt of electricity through the Browns' otherwise-dead offense. He completed 17 of 23 passes for 201 yards in the Browns' 21-17 win.

Darnold, meanwhile, slogged through a forgettable performance, completing 15 of 31 passes for 169 yards. He also threw a terrible pass that was intercepted by linebacker Joe Schobert, who was standing right in front of Jets receiver Jermaine Kearse that essentially ended the game with less than two minutes to go.

Jets rookie QB Sam Darnold struggled and lost his battle with Baker Mayfield on Thursday as the Jets fell to the Browns 21-17.

Darnold threw two interceptions in the fourth quarter while trying to march the Jets down the field.

Overall, he was was 15-for-31 for 169 yards in the loss and featured a career worst 48.4 completion percentage and QB rating of 38.3

THE GAME

The Jets (1-1) at the Cleveland Browns (0-1-1) at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 8:20 p.m. ET.

THE WEATHER

A wet day is expected to turn into a decent night, with clear skies and temperatures in the mid-70s. The wind, though, could be 10-20 miles per hour coming off the lake.

WHAT IT MEANS

This game would be a lot more fun if it were Sam Darnold vs. Baker Mayfield, but the Browns are still rolling with Tyrod Taylor (for now). That makes this more of a test for Darnold and his ability to bounce back from the first disappointment of his young career. It's also his first short week, which is never easy. It'll be very interesting to see how he responds. … As for the Browns, they haven't won since Christmas Eve, 2016 and are 1 for their last 33 games. The Jets certainly want to avoid the embarrassment of being only their second victim in three years.

Many have given their case as to where the blame should be placed for the Giants' 0-2 start to the season. The offensive line's shaky play seems to be at the top, with head coach Pat Shurmur taking a brunt of the backlash as well.

And then there's the play of 37-year-old QB Eli Manning that is in the spotlight as well. Former Jet and current ESPN Damien Woody is on that bandwagon.

Appearing on ESPN's "Get Up" morning show on Wednesday, Woody ripped Manning's level of play, and basically said he's finished after just two weeks into the new season...

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | ArchiveJosh Gordon is a tantalizing prospect. He's a 6-foot-3, 225-pound receiver who once had an incredible, 87-catch, 1,646-yard, nine-touchdown performance in a season in which he played only 14 games. That was supposed to be only a scratch in the surface of his great talent. And he's still only 27 years old.

Now he's headed to the New England Patriots, after the Cleveland Browns struck a deal to send Gordon for a 2019 fifth-round pick. If Gordon is not active for 10 games, a 2019 seventh-round pick will be returned to the Patriots. The Jets, meanwhile, still don't have a true No. 1 receiver to gift-wrap to their young quarterback, Sam Darnold.

They need a player like Gordon. It's just that acquiring Gordon would've been a terrible idea.

The Jets suffered a disheartening 20-12 defeat to the Dolphins in their home opener on Sunday afternoon. Let's break down how each unit performed.

Quarterbacks

While Sam Darnold passed for over 330 yards and a touchdown, the Jets missed several opportunities to get back into the game. There is cause for concern over Darnold's ability to see the field as he didn't anticipate a safety sitting on the route on his first interception and failed to see a couple of wide-open receivers that were open for potential big plays...

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The Miami Dolphins only led by eight points when they got the ball back with 5:56 left in the game. One stop, like maybe on the third-and-19 with 3:36 remaining, and Sam Darnold would've gotten the ball back in his hands with a chance to tie the game.

Everyone in the Meadowlands wanted to see that. And everyone felt confident that the way Darnold was playing, if it actually happened, the Jets would've had a pretty decent shot.

Jets rookie QB Sam Darnold made his home debut on Sunday, but couldn't come away with a win against the Dolphins.

Darnold went 25-for-41 for 334 yards through the air with one touchdown and two interceptions.

The 21-year-old now has three interceptions in his first two games, and these two this afternoon were crucial ones. His first came in the first quarter when TJ McDonald anticipated a slant route by Quincy Enunwa, and jumped the route. It led the Dolphins to their first touchdown of the game with Kenyan Drake scoring three plays later.

THE GAME

The Jets (1-0) vs. the Miami Dolphins (1-0) at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Sunday, Sept. 16, at 1 p.m. ET.

THE WEATHER

Sunny and 80 degrees. ... See, even Mother Nature would dare rain on the Jets' parade.

WHAT IT MEANS

It might just be the happiest home opener in years for the Jets. It might even be a sellout. And why not? Who wouldn't want to see Sam Darnold, the future, after what he and the rest of the Jets did to the Lions last Monday night. Darnold playing well wasn't a surprise. The Jets pounding Detroit 48-17 was a pretty big shock, though. Maybe it was a fluke, but don't tell that to the players. If they can do anything close to that again, their bandwagon may be full.

Giants rookie RB Saquon Barkley had himself a solid debut this past Sunday with 106 rushing yards and his first career touchdown run. But, when it comes to New York rookies, it was Jets QB Sam Darnold that got the most attention.

Darnold led the Jets to a rout of the Lions on Monday night, and it brought about the conversation of the Giants passing on the 21-year-old signal caller to take Barkley in this year's Draft. Some believed the Giants should have gone after a quarterback with the veteran Eli Manning winding down his career.

However, GM Dave Gettleman proved the Giants are in win-now mode by taking Barkley. And S Landon Collins believes that was the better pick anyway.

Jets rookie QB Sam Darnold did exactly what he wanted in his NFL debut: He got a win. He also had himself a pretty good game in the box score.

Darnold's first pass had the worst possible outcome in a pick-six, but he bounced back immediately. Overall, he finished 16-for-21 for 198 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. He also had a 116.8 quarterback rating in the end.

So, how does this long-awaited debut stack up against past Jets quarterbacks taken in the NFL Draft? Here are a few debuts from "The Sanchize" to "Broadway Joe..."

Quarterbacks

Rookie Sam Darnold couldn't have had a worse start as his awful first pass was intercepted and returned for a score. But once his "Welcome to the NFL moment" was out of the way, he settled down nicely and had an efficient performance. He completed a deep ball -- something he didn't get a chance to do in the preseason -- for a touchdown to Robby Anderson and made some good throws on the move.

Jets fans filled the Meadowlands on Sunday afternoon, hoping to see for themselves what all the Sam Darnold excitement was about. Instead, they got reminder of the truth about rookie quarterbacks: No matter how good they are, they all struggle and make inexcusable mistakes.

In other words, The Darnold Era hit its first bump in the road.

It's not that Darnold was bad. He wasn't. He 25 of 41 for 334 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, and he had some really terrific throws and moments in the Jets' 20-12 loss to the Miami Dolphins. It's just that he did what he mostly avoided doing in the opener last Monday night. He made some big mistakes in some big spots.

THE GAME

The Jets (0-0) at the Detroit Lions (0-0) at Ford Field in Detroit, on Monday, Sept. 10 at 7:10 p.m. ET.

THE WEATHER

Fall-like, with overcast skies and temperatures in the upper 50s. But who cares? The Lions play in a dome. It'll be nice inside.

WHAT IT MEANS

Five years and five months from now, when the Jets are winning Super Bowl LVIII and millions of delirious Jets fans are camping out to welcome Sam Darnold down the Canyon of Heroes, you'll take a moment to think back to this Monday night game, where it all began. It's the dawn of the Darnold Era and the first time the Jets will go into a season with the real hope that they have their franchise quarterback for the first time since Joe Namath left town. The result of this game is almost secondary to how Darnold performs. It's all about him. It's all about hope.

Todd Bowles has had the same season goal since he took over as Jets head coach.

"Our goal is to take one game at a time and get to the playoffs and win the Super Bowl, and that's our expectation," Bowles told Newsday's Al Iannazzone. "That's what it was last year. Going into Week 1 is no different for us."

The goal may not be different, but there are different pieces that Bowles will be hoping to lead to the promise land. The obvious is rookie QB Sam Darnold, who Bowles officially named the starter earlier this week. When sits under center for the first snap at Ford Field on Monday Night Football against the Lions, he will be the youngest quarterback to start Week 1 since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger.

There have been 30 starting quarterbacks that have bridged the 42-year gap between Joe Namath and Sam Darnold. EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Sam Darnold met Joe Namath for the first time on Friday night, in a moment shown on the scoreboard for everyone to see.

The Jets should've made that moment even bigger. They should've had Namath hand Darnold the torch.

Because the time has come for the Jets to officially anoint their first true franchise quarterback since Namath left town more than 40 years ago. It's going to happen sooner or later, and it should happen now. The 21-year-old Darnold has done everything the Jets have asked him to do this summer. He's been everything they expected.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - In his most important audition for the Jets so far -- a full half against a first-team defense -- Sam Darnold was not at his best. But it still might have been good enough to convince Todd Bowles to hand him the starting quarterback job.

The 21-year-old Darnold only completed 8 of 16 passes for 86 yards in the Jets' 22-16 loss to the Giants on Friday night. But beyond the numbers the kid continued to look like he's ready. He led two touchdown drives against the Giants' first-team defense, despite a leaky offensive line, generally poor field position and a patchwork receiving corps. Yes, his numbers probably should have been better.

They certainly could have been worse.

Landon Collins thinks the Jets drafted a winner in Sam Darnold, but that doesn't mean the Giants defense isn't looking forward to 'feasting' on the rookie.

Collins thinks Darnold's career will be a successful one but says the Giants defense is going to 'have fun' with their game against the Jets' rookie.

"He's a rookie, we feast on rookies sometimes," Collins said, via Newsday's Owen O'Brien. "It's always an exciting game. To see him play, he's going to have a fantastic career once he gets it going, and … I know he's going to do a great job at the Jets, but you're playing against a good defense, and we're going to have fun with it."

The Jets should be thankful for Eli Manning.

If the Giants legend wasn't still in the plans of the organization, the G-men likely would have selected a quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 draft. But because they believe in Manning, as well as GM Dave Gettleman's lightly-veiled love of Saquon Barkley, the Giants selected the Penn State running back instead of a quarterback.

All of those circumstances allowed the Jets to draft Sam Darnold.

Many Jets fan want to know what is on the minds of head coach Todd Bowles and GM Mike Maccagnan when comes to their starting quarterback.

Well, fans are going to have to wait for that decision to happen as Bowles has noted he won't be making that call until after the preseason games are over. As for Maccagnan, though, he loves what he is seeing from his No. 3 overall pick in Sam Darnold so far in camp.

Speaking on WFAN's Boomer and Gio show, Maccagnan said he was "exceptionally impressed" by how Darnold has been progressing as he gets acclimated to the NFL. He also said Darnold has an "unflappable" presence when he's running the offense.

Jets head coach Todd Bowles may know in his head who he wants starting Week 1, but he's going to wait until these final preseason games before he makes a final decision.

Bowles got to see Darnold and Bridgewater in action on Thursday, giving him more tape to watch to determine what to do with his quarterbacks room. McCown didn't see any time in the bout against the Redskins, but that was expected as the Jets look to get Darnold and Bridgewater more reps.

"I have some ideas in my head, but I'll wait till the last two preseason games," Bowles told The Post's Greg Joyce on Saturday.

Jets head coach Todd Bowles said his decision to name a starting quarterback for Week 1 is "cloudy" through two preseason games.

Between the experienced Josh McCown, newcomer Teddy Bridgewater and rookie Sam Darnold, Bowles has two more preseason games to determine what they all bring to the table.

And if it was up to former Jets wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson, he would pick Bridgewater over Darnold.

There's a long way to go in the preseason, but halfway through, one thing about the Jets quarterback situation is clear: Teddy Bridgewater looks like he gives the Jets the best chance to win.

Yet Todd Bowles can't give him the starting job.

Darnold, Bridgewater face Skins 00:01:19
Sam Darnold and Teddy Bridgewater both saw significant action in a preseason loss to the Redskins on Thursday night.

The education of Sam Darnold continued with another strong performance from the rookie quarterback on Thursday night. He's done just about everything the Jets have asked him to do so far.

But if the Jets really want to see if he's ready to be their Opening Day starter, they're going to have to ask him to do more.

LANDOVER, Md. - Sam Darnold got a lot of work with the Jets' first-team offense this week, and might even start their preseason game against the Redskins on Thursday night. Maybe that's just Todd Bowles' way of getting him ready.

Or maybe it's a sign that he already is.

Jets rookie QB Sam Darnold has been seeing a heavy workload with the first-team offense this week at joint practices with the Redskins. And that also means he's going against Washington's best on defense.

So, how has he fared? Just ask Pro Bowl CB Josh Norman what he thinks.

It wasn't the biggest storyline from Sunday's Jets-Redskins joint practice, given the epic brawl that broke out involving about 30 players. But Jets rookie QB Sam Darnold saw the heaviest workload with the first-team offense.

Darnold's competition -- Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater -- obviously saw their fair share of reps. But it was Darnold who was under center most of the time, which begs the question: Will he be the starter this Thursday when the two teams face off in Week 2 of the preseason?

"It's no indication," Bowles said after the joint practice Sunday. "Just getting him caught up on some things."
