At 4-8, the Jets are all but certain to miss out on the playoffs.

It's been a strange season for Gang Green, starting with a Week 1 loss to Buffalo that easily could have been a win, followed by Sam Darnold missing three games with mono. And just as it looked like the season was on the verge of a complete collapse at 1-7, the Jets won three straight to get to 4-7.

Then, unexpectedly, the Jets were defeated by the previously winless Bengals.

Now, the Jets will look to finish out the final quarter of their regular season schedule, and, at the very least, build momentum heading into 2020.

The Jets' chances at the playoffs were slim, but now they're dead following their 22-6 loss to the winless Bengals on Sunday.

After winning three-straight games heading into Week 13, the loss came as a bit of a shock. With the tides turning, could the Jets have overlooked the Bengals, leading to their demise?

Quarterback Sam Darnold says no.

As Adam Gase emphasized during the week, the Jets were entering this week's game as a 4-7 team and they sure played like one against the Bengals on Sunday. Now they're a 4-8 team, having lost to a winless team for the second time since the bye week.

To their credit, the Bengals played with good energy and discipline on defense, and rode a solid Andy Dalton performance in his return to the lineup to break a 13-game losing streak that stretched back to last December.

Offensively, the Jets had some near misses, but struggled to sustain drives, mainly due to dropped passes and ill-timed penalties. The Bengals exploited some coverage breakdowns to score two first half touchdowns and built a 17-3 lead before the Jets drove for a late field goal.

Jets running back Le'Veon Bell chooses not to live and die by the numbers.

Through the first 11 games of his first season with the Jets, he has experienced highs and lows.

After the first eight games saw New York stumbled out with just one win, the team's turnaround has been on full display.

Zac Taylor has an eye for offensive talent.

Before his rise to first-year head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals, he spent the past two years with the reigning NFC champion Los Angeles Rams on Sean McVay's staff as assistant wide receivers coach (2017) and quarterbacks coach (2018), overseeing the offense that ranked second in points (32.9) and total yards (421.1) per game into last year's Super Bowl LIII appearance.

So when Taylor previewed Week 13 with the Bengals (0-11) hosting the Jets (4-7) Sunday at 1 p.m. from Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati, he had an appreciation for his opposition's quarterback.

The Jets' Week 7 loss to the Patriots on Monday Night Football was a low point of Sam Darnold's young NFL career.

Facing the league's top defense, Darnold struggled mightily, completing just 11 of his 32 passes for a mere 86 yards. He threw four interceptions as well, as the Jets were shut out 33-0 in front of a national audience.

Fast forward to just over one month later, and things are looking much different for Darnold and the Jets. The Jets have won three straight games over the Giants, Redskins, and Raiders, and during that span, Darnold has thrown for 838 yards with seven touchdowns and one interception, compiling a 117.2 passer rating.

The Bengals are in desperate need of a win, so much so that they strayed away from their Ryan Finley project and returned Andy Dalton to his role as the team's starting quarterback.

So he'll be taking on a Jets defense that has been shutting down offenses during this three-game win streak, and though he hasn't been getting the game reps he's used to these past three weeks, head coach Adam Gase knows his defense can't underestimate him.

"It's obviously something we have to be highly aware of," he told reporters before practice on Wednesday. "Andy's through the most part of his career has done a good job taking care of the football, putting the team in a good position as far as third and manageable situations. He sees the game well."

Sincere? Bitter former coach of the Jets? The world may never know, but for now, Rex Ryan is going on the record again, saying he prefers Giants rookie quarterback Daniel Jones over Jets QB Sam Darnold

On ESPN's "Get Up" on Monday, Ryan was posed with that exact question. He was definitive.

"He is better. Daniel Jones is better," Ryan said.

Sam Darnold got a lot of laughs two weeks ago when he said "If we get on a roll here and we win out, we've got a chance at the playoffs." The Jets had just beaten the Giants for their second win of the season. So it was ridiculous, unlikely, and somewhat comical that he really seemed to believed it.

A lot fewer people were laughing on Sunday, though, after the Jets demolished the Oakland Raiders 34-3, and Darnold said the playoffs are "in the back of my head."

It is still a longshot, of course. It's probably still ridiculous and unlikely. But the Jets are 4-7 now and on the fast track to 6-7 with the winless Bengals (0-11) and the awful Dolphins (2-9) up next on their schedule. The standings show they are just two games back in the race for the AFC's second wild-card spot, albeit with six teams in line ahead of them.

The Jets won their third straight game when they handled the Oakland Raiders 34-3 Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Suddenly, the Jets are 4-7 on the 2019 season and have scored 34 points in each of the past three victories.

What is there to make of the Jets' momentum as Week 13 at the Cincinnati Bengals looms? SNY's Ralph Vacchiano breaks it down.

The Jets have gotten a wake up call through the arm of Sam Darnold as the offense continued to click on all cylinders in their win over the Raiders on Sunday.

The Jets put 34 points on the board (27 on offense, seven on defense Sunday) for the third straight game and those efforts were all enough to pick up W's. Despite Adam Gase still unable to get the running game going much, he's clearly woken up a flame in Darnold, who has looked like a new quarterback over the last three weeks.

"Close to it," Gase said on if this is where he expected his offense to be entering the season. "There's still a lot of things we need to improve on, just more consistent in the running game. ...When you're not going three and out... it makes it easier."

On "Star Wars Day" at Metlife Stadium, the force definitely wasn't strong with the Raiders.

Sam Darnold passed for over 300 yards and two scores, and also rushed for a score as the Jets swept Oakland aside impressively to put a major dent in the Raiders' postseason hopes. Beating lowly teams like Washington and the Giants is one thing, but this was the kind of win which will get people looking at this Jets team and it's short-to-medium term future in a different way.

The Jets enter Sunday's game against the Raiders coming off of two straight wins.

As they look to building momentum and earn their first three-game win streak of the season, Gang Green will be lead on offense by Sam Darnold, who has been tremendous of late.

In the last two weeks alone, Darnold has thrown for five touchdowns, and according to his head coach Adam Gase, the second-year signal caller is seeing things well, especially early in games.

Ryan Griffin has been one of the biggest surprises on the Jets this season, and the team rewarded him on Saturday evening by signing the tight end to a multi-year extension.

SNY's Ralph Vacchiano has confirmed Griffin's extension is a three-year, $10.8 million deal, with $4 million guaranteed.

The Jets came into the season believing that Chris Herndon would be the team's number one tight end, but he started the season on the suspended list, opening the door for Griffin, whom the Jets signed this past July.

Originally a sixth round pick out of UConn in 2013, Griffin spent his first six seasons with the Texans, starting 36 games while catching 136 passes for 1,491 yards and seven touchdowns.

The Jets head into a big game this Sunday against the Raiders riding their first winning streak of the season, having just beaten the Giants and Redskins in back-to-back weekends.

A big part of the turn around in play has come from quarterback Sam Darnold, who has played much better for the Jets after a rough three-game stretch coming off the team's first win over the Cowboys in Week 6.

"He's done a good job of just focusing one week at a time," head coach Adam Gase said about Darnold. "If something bad happened the week before, that's really the focus for him has been, fix it, make sure it doesn't happen again or try to avoid that same mistake twice. He does do a really good job of resetting...once we start talking about the next team, he just puts it in the past and doesn't dwell on it."

After a 1-7 start, nothing seemed to be going right for the Jets this season.

But in the last couple of weeks, the team has managed to go on a modest two-game winning streak, scoring exactly 34 points a game in wins over the Giants and Redskins.

And while a 3-7 record still has the Jets in a whole, Gang Green now has a chance to win a third straight game on Sunday afternoon when the Oakland Raiders visit MetLife Stadium.

The key for the Jets is to build off what they've been able to accomplish the last two weeks, and not slide back into bad habits from the first half of the season.

Ahead of the 2019 season, right tackle Brandon Shell was widely regarded among Mike Maccagnan's most successful draft picks and a candidate to remain with the team at the end of his rookie deal. However, an early season benching seemed to signify that the Jets were perhaps preparing to move on from the 27 year old. Recently, injuries have necessitated a return to the starting line-up for Shell, who seems to have held up well. This begs the question as to whether the Jets may still have a use for him.

Shell was selected in the fifth round of the 2016 draft, after the Jets traded away a 2017 mid-round pick to select the former South Carolina Gamecock. Shell looked the part and had good bloodlines -- his uncle is NFL Hall of Famer Art Shell -- but scouts figured he'd need some technical refinement before he could contribute at the NFL level.

Having ridden the bench for much of his rookie season, Shell started three games at the end of the year, during which he fared better than expected. He then won the starting job at training camp the following summer and started 26 of 32 games as the first-choice right tackle over the next two seasons.

Jets rookie cornerback Blessuan Austin was the Jets highest-rated defender in the team's Week 11 win over the Redskins on Sunday, according to Pro Football Focus.

Austin made his NFL debut in Week 10 against the Giants, making three tackles and forcing a fumble. On Sunday against Washington, he was targeted six times, allowing just three catches for nine yards. He also chipped in with three tackles.

"He's not afraid," Gase said of Austin last week. "He's not shy of confidence. He's confident in himself. He did a lot of good stuff. It was good to see him around the ball."

The Jets started their blowout loss to the Patriots in Week 7 with an interception two plays into the game. Since then, the Jets have opened their last four games in a row with touchdowns.

So what's different? Opening drives by NFL teams are often scripted. The ensuing one might be as well.

But quarterback Sam Darnold isn't crediting a script for the Jets' early-game successes. Instead, it's all about building the right beat coming out of the gate for Gang Green's offense, the quarterback said on Monday.

Sam Darnold knows from experience what life as an NFL rookie quarterback is like.

So after Dwayne Haskins struggled for the Redskins in Sunday's 34-17 loss to the Jets, Darnold sought out Washington's first-year signal caller at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, and shared some words of advice.

"I just told him after the game to keep his head up," Darnold said. "No matter what people say, the doubters, people who are going to say anything bad about him, I just said, 'Walk it out, man. Just continue to go to work. And if you go to work every single day, it'll be all right.'"

Ryan Griffin gave Sam Darnold the go-to target that the Jets needed in Sunday's 34-17 win over the Washington Redskins.

As the second-year quarterback completed 19 of 30 passes (63.3 percent) for 293 yards and a career-high four touchdowns to one interception, the veteran tight end was New York's leading receiver with five receptions for 109 yards (21.8 average) and a touchdown.

Griffin, who caught all five passes Darnold targeted him on and hauled in a long of 45 yards, buried the Redskins (1-9) with 36 seconds left in the second quarter when he caught his 16-yard touchdown pass to put the Jets (3-7) ahead, 20-3, at halftime.

He was a man the Redskins drafted 105th overall back in 2015 out of Duke -- someone they believed would be their secret weapon in the passing game for years to come.

But, on Sunday in Washington D.C., Jamison Crowder was handing it to his former employer instead.

The Jets took down the lowly Redskins, 34-17, on the road, and Crowder played a big part in that. He hauled in five receptions for 76 yards with a 29-yard touchdown as the big highlight from his performance.

It was a career day for Jets quarterback Sam Darnold on Sunday against the Redskins, as the No. 3 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft threw for a personal best four touchdowns in the win.

Darnold was 19-of-30 passing for 293 yards to go along with four touchdowns and an interception. He averaged 9.8 yards per attempt, a big time improvement from his season average of 6.4 yards per attempt.

He finished the game with a quarterback rating of 121.3, which is the second highest of his career and best rating in a game this season. His career-high quarterback rating of 128.4 came in Week 16 of the 2018 season against the Green Bay Packers. Darnold's previous season-high rating of 113.8 came in the team's Week 6 win over the Dallas Cowboys.

The game against the Giants wasn't a fluke. Sam Darnold really is back on track.

The Jets' franchise quarterback had one of his finest games of the season on Sunday, shredding the awful Washington Redskins in a 34-17 win. He completed 19-of-30 passes for 293 yards with four touchdowns and an interception.

Granted, it was against the Redskins and they are a truly bad team. But the 22-year-old Darnold showed a lot of the things that made people think he was destined for greatness before he began to regress earlier this season. He made a lot of throws outside the pocket, which has always been his specialty. He showed patience and leadership in the pocket, and some fantastic throws.

In the first half of the Jets' season, almost anything that could have gone wrong, did.

With Sam Darnold sidelined for three games due to mono, plus other injuries to key players like CJ Mosley, the Jets stumbled out of the gates to a 1-7 record.

But Gang Green rebounded to beat the Giants last week in a 34-27 game, and now the team hopes to take some momentum into this Sunday's game at Washington.

The saddest thing about the current state of the Jets is that this was supposed to be the year they arrived. After nine years of waiting for a playoff game, after enduring three years of rebuilding under ex-GM Mike Maccagnan, it was all supposed to come together in 2019.

Not only didn't that happen, but now the Jets appear to be on the brink of a rebuilding project again.

On Wednesday, Jets owner Christopher Johnson told reporters that head coach Adam Gase will be returning for the 2020-21 season, despite the team's current 2-7 record.

Many players were pleased to hear this news, especially second-year quarterback Sam Darnold, who spoke to media during Thursday's press conference.

"I think if everything works out how it's supposed to, and Adam's here again, I think that would be absolutely amazing," Darnold said. "Already going into OTA's and knowing the whole offense, and even being able to build off of things we've already done this year. It would be incredible."

Jets head coach Adam Gase entering another week coming off a win at home, searching for his team's first win streak of the season. They have a good chance to make that happen against the lowly Redskins, whose only win this season came against the Dolphins.

During his daily presser before practice, Gase was brought to the attention of some of his players saying this franchise as had a hard time sustaining success, though. Just when it looks like they've turned the corner with a big win, they end up taking a loss the next week to counteract it.

That's why Gase is determined to focus solely on this week, and not have the win in the back of his mind. For him, the past week -- win or loss -- doesn't matter.

Adam Gase joined ESPN and YES Network's The Michael Kay Show on Tuesday to discuss the Jets' huge win over the Giants this past week.

Gase discussed the performance of his young quarterback Sam Darnold and how his play seemed different when compared to other weeks this season.

"I thought he played really well," Gase told Michael Kay. "He did a great job of controlling really the things that he could control. He did a good job of making the right decision when he was in the pocket, whether it be taking a sack, throwing the ball away, just those little tiny things instead of trying to go out there and win it by himself. He did a good job of spreading the ball around, doing what he had to do to move the ball down the field."

It was announced by Jets head coach Adam Gase that TE Chris Herndon and G Brian Winters suffered tough injuries during the win over the Giants on Sunday. Now, it's the last game the two Jets will play this season.

The Jets announced via Twitter that both Herndon and Winters have been placed on the season-ending IR. Herndon suffered a fractured rib, while Winters re-dislocated his shoulder and may need surgery.

This is particularily tough for Herndon, who had the exact opposite sophomore campaign (or lack thereof) than his rookie season, where he proved to be a playmaker at the tight end position.

Crowder had five catches for 81 yards and one touchdown in the win. He scored on a 23-yard pass from Sam Darnold in the first quarter to give the Jets an early 14-0 lead.

In their first game against each other at their shared home in MetLife Stadium, Daniel Jones and Sam Darnold put up some solid numbers for their respective teams. But Darnold got the last laugh as the Jets pulled out a 34-27 win over the Giants.

On paper, it seems that Jones got the best of Darnold based on individual statistics--Jones finished the game 26-of-40 for 308 yards, four touchdowns and zero interceptions, compared to Darnold's not as eye popping performance of 230 yards and one touchdown on 19-of-30 passing--Darnold also ran in for a touchdown, as well.

But the glaring issues for Jones came at a familiar spot that's been hurting him all season: holding on to the football while in the pocket.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The season has already been embarrassing for the Giants. On Sunday they managed to make it worse.

And that's a huge problem for Giants head coach Pat Shurmur and his coaching staff after the Giants lost to the awful Jets, 34-27. Things were bad enough, but a loss to the crosstown rivals is a humiliating defeat that is sure to enrage owner John Mara. Even worse: They've now got two weeks to stew about it, thanks to an ill-timed bye.

To this point, Shurmur wasn't really on a hot seat and his coaching staff wasn't in much danger. The Giants underwent an uncharacteristic, in-season change just two years ago and don't really have an appetite to do that again. GM Dave Gettleman also genuinely seems to like Shurmur as a coach, and according to a team source, has preached patience and believes the team is headed in the right direction.

The Jets lost some protection for Sam Darnold in their tight matchup with the Giants Sunday, as right guard Brian Winters has been ruled out for the remainder of the game with a shoulder injury.

On a 3rd-and-11, Darnold tried connecting with Robby Anderson for the first down, but Anderson couldn't complete the catch before being taken down hard to the ground. The receiver was shaken up on the play and seemed to hurt his shoulder/collarbone, but was able to leave the field under his own power and eventually return to the game.

Back at the line of scrimmage, Winters was hit by another member of the offensive line and went down holding his shoulder area. He too was able to leave the field on his own after trainers came to check on him while down on the field.

SNY's Jeane Coakley talked to Jets head coach Adam Gase ahead of the team's rivalry game against the Giants on Sunday.

"I think we're really focused on us," Gase said. "You can feel it's a little different."

Gase also mentioned that he's impressed with how quarterback Sam Darnold has been improving at practice after a couple rough performances.

"It's probably just the way he's gone back to work," Gase said. "Finding ways to correct the mistakes that have been made. He's done a good job at practice, we just got to get it to carry over to games."

With the Giants and Jets playing each other on Sunday at MetLife Stadium, it will be the first time that quarterbacks Daniel Jones and Sam Darnold face off in the regular season.

Both QBs are just 22-years-old -- in fact, Jones is nine days older than Darnold -- and are already leading their teams as starters since being drafted. The Giants selected Jones with the No. 6 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, while the Jets took Darnold third overall in the 2018 NFL Draft.

ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky and CBS analyst Rich Gannon, both former NFL quarterbacks, spoke with Steve Serby of the NY Post to debate which quarterback looks better so far in their young careers.

There is a Quarterback Revolution going on in the NFL, with one generation taking the baton from the last. The days of Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger, Philip Rivers and Eli Manning are either over already, or will be soon.

And the new kids are already on the block.

The Giants and Jets are a combined 3-14, one year after going a combined 9-23, one year after going a combined 8-24. That's a 20-61 record over the last 2 ½ seasons, for a "winning" percentage of .246.

So no, the Giants and Jets don't match up particularly well with the rest of the professional football world right now. But how do they match up with each other?

In advance of their big showdown on Sunday at the Meadowlands, let's take a look:

The Jets are 1-7 and haven't played their best football. The same can be said for quarterback Sam Darnold.

Most expected a step forward for the second-year pro this year. Many observers of the team say Darnold has actually regressed instead of improving this year.

But Darnold himself doesn't think so, though. And neither does his head coach.

The Jets' 26-18 loss to the previously-winless Dolphins received honest grades from Ray Lucas and Bart Scott.

After the game Sunday afternoon, the two analysts assessed the poor performance by New York (1-7) on SNY's "Jets Post Game."

Here's how Lucas and Scott reacted to what was a disappointing effort against Miami (1-7) on both sides of the ball.

The Jets' fanbase is furious, if not outright disgusted. The frustration is building inside the Jets organization, too. They are now 1-7 in what they thought would be their first playoff season in nearly a decade, and they just lost to a team that might very well be trying to lose.

Given all those extremes, it's impossible to say for sure that Adam Gase won't be one-and-done as the Jets' head coach. When the losses pile up, fans revolt, and the wheels begin to come off, anything is possible.
