EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- A year ago, Jets owner Christopher Johnson made it clear he won't judge Todd Bowles on wins and losses alone. He said his evaluation would be about "progression" and whether or not he saw it would "be obvious to all."

It certainly was obvious on Sunday afternoon when the Buffalo Bills humiliated Bowles' Jets 41-10. New York looked unprepared, disinterested and incredibly incompetent.

And if Johnson wasn't considering firing Bowles before that, he certainly has to be now.

The Jets head to the bye week with a 3-7 record after a humiliating 41-10 loss to the Bills. Let's review three of the best and worst performances from Sunday's game.

Losers

QB Josh McCown

In his first start since last December, McCown was disappointingly erratic. He went just 17-for-34 with two interceptions, as he had five passes batted down at the line of scrimmage. Most of his 134 yards came in garbage time, as he averaged just four yards per attempt. Moreover, the majority of those yards came after the catch as the Jets ran an uninspiring horizontal passing offense.

Jets unhappy after Bills loss 00:00:55
Todd Bowles, Jamal Adams and other Jets players voice their disappointment after their blowout loss to the Buffalo Bill

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - A week ago the Jets threw away their playoff hopes with a loss in Miami, but at least they showed some fight in that game.

This week, against the horrible Buffalo Bills, the Jets didn't show up at all.

In what has to be one of the worst losses in a franchise history filled with terrible losses, the Jets absolutely embarrassed themselves in their 41-10 loss to the Bills on Sunday. They were down 31-0 in the first half to a team that had totaled 20 points in its last three games. They were outgained 186 yards to 1 - one! - in the first quarter and 313-68 by halftime.

If these truly are the final games of the Todd Bowles era, the Jets have an enormous, franchise-defining decision to make. If they expect to be a contender in 2019, if they expect Sam Darnold to be their long-awaited franchise savior, the next coach they hire absolutely can't miss.

So whom could they hire to replace Bowles? Here's a look at 12 candidates that figure to be on their list:

Jets QB Sam Darnold (foot strain) will be inactive against the Bills on Sunday afternoon.

Darnold's status had been in doubt all week, and it was revealed Thursday that Josh McCown would get the start. However, head coach Todd Bowles had not ruled Darnold out as the potential backup.

However, the Jets' hand was tipped a bit on Saturday when SNY's Ralph Vacchiano confirmed that QB Davis Webb was going to be activated from the practice squad in advance of Sunday's game...

THE GAME

The Jets (3-6) vs. Buffalo Bills (2-7) at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 1 p.m. ET.

THE WEATHER

It'll be a chilly day, with temperatures topping out in the mid-40s and moderate winds. It should be sunny, though.

WHAT IT MEANS

The Jets pretty much took any real meaning out of this game by losing to the Dolphins a week ago. A win only gets them back to 4-6 heading into their bye week, and they'd still need a miracle against a tough schedule after Thanksgiving to even sniff a shot at the playoffs. So all a win does is make them feel a little happier heading into their week off. But a loss? Whoa, would that turn things in a bad way against the Jets. This is an awful Bills team that even the Jets should crush, especially with veteran Josh McCown taking over at quarterback for a suddenly shaky Sam Darnold. If they lose this game, they could be headed to a season worse than last year, and there may be nothing that could save Todd Bowles' job.

Jets head coach Todd Bowles wouldn't completely rule out rookie QB Sam Darnold against the Bills. But their latest roster move says otherwise.

The Jets will activate QB Davis Webb from the practice squad to the 53-man roster, SNY's Ralph Vacchiano confirmed. And while the Jets haven't officially confirmed it yet, Webb is expected to be the team's backup.

Darnold was listed as doubtful on the Jets' injury report after being diagnosed with a foot strain earlier this week. Bowles told the media on Thursday that veteran QB Josh McCown will get the start for the Jets, with Darnold not expected to be 100 percent.

Bowles talks McCown 00:00:39
Todd Bowles talks about Josh McCown starting in place of Sam Darnold this Sunday vs the Bills

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - The Jets had no intentions of sitting Sam Darnold, no matter how much he's struggled over the last few weeks. They were going to let him play through his growing pains, to find his own way out, no matter what it did to their season.

Maybe that's the right way to do it. No doubt most NFL quarterbacks would argue that it is.

But given how lost he's looked on the field for the last three weeks, it couldn't hurt for Darnold to watch a little from the sidelines. So maybe this strained foot he suffered will turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

Rookie QB Sam Darnold has been under center for the Jets since Week 1. But that streak may be coming to an end.

Darnold was diagnosed with a strained right foot, head coach Todd Bowles said on Wednesday after practice. The 21-year-old was seen walking in street clothes with a boot on his foot, and questions immediately rose as to whether or not the team's franchise quarterback will see his first inactive game against the Bills this week.

"It's just adversity," Darnold said. "Just gotta deal with it. Get better as soon as possible, get back on the field as soon as possible."

Jets QB Sam Darnold has suffered a strained foot that will may keep him out of Sunday's game against the Bills, a source confirmed to SNY's Ralph Vacchiano.

The team will re-evaluate the rookie after the upcoming bye week, and his status for the Jets' Nov. 25 home game against the Patriots is "uncertain," according to the source. Josh McCown will start for the Jets against Buffalo, and Davis Webb will likely be activated from the practice squad to be the backup.

However, head coach Todd Bowles said after practice Wednedsay that he wouldn't officially rule out Darnold, who was considered day-to-day.

Jets rookie QB Sam Darnold may have been seen with a boot on his right foot at practice Wednesday, but head coach Todd Bowles said not to rule him out for Sunday's game against the Bills so fast.

It was confirmed earlier on Wednesdsay by SNY's Ralph Vacchiano that Jets rookie QB Sam Darnold suffered a sprained foot, and his status for New York's matchup with the Patriots following their bye week was up in the air.

However, Bowles updated the diagnosis on the 21-year-old to a strained foot instead.

It has been a tough few weeks for Sam Darnold, but the Jets are not deviating from their plan for their rookie quarterback -- for now.

The 21-year-old had by far his worst performance of the season on Sunday, throwing four interceptions, including a pick-six, in a 13-6 loss to the Dolphins to fall to 3-6.

Darnold now has seven interceptions compared to two touchdowns in his last three games and it prompted head coach Todd Bowles to be asked whether or not he would consider benching the quarterback.

The Jets had a chance to establish themselves as contenders during this two-week stretch, to show they're ahead of their own rebuilding schedule. All they had to do was beat two very beatable teams.

Instead, on Sunday in Miami, they blew it. Again. Given an opportunity to take a positive step towards playoff contention, they were no-shows - again -- in a very big spot.

And that was an all-too-familiar sight for this team under Jets coach Todd Bowles.

Jets safety Jamal Adams said he was "pissed off" after New York lost 13-6 to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, its third straight loss after a 3-3 start.

"I don't know what else to say," Adams told reporters. "It's not Coach (Todd) Bowles's fault. I know he puts it on his back, it's not his fault. ... I'm sick of losing. Enough is enough, honestly. I'm fed up with losing."

The Jets defense held Miami without a touchdown and limited the Dolphins to 168 total yards on offense, however the Jets committed four turnovers -- all Sam Darnold interceptions -- and have been held to 16 points over their last two games.

Dating back to last season, Adams's rookie year, the Jets are 5-15 in their last 20 games. They have had two three-game losing streaks this season and lost six of seven games to end the 2017 season.

Though Maccagnan said he was frustrated at the Jets' 3-5 record, he said he found rookie quarterback Sam Darnold's growth promising and believes the Jets, who are projected to have at least $90 million in salary cap space in the offseason, according to Over The Cap, are putting themselves in a position to "springboard this thing forward," according to The Athletic's Connor Hughes.

Their instinct is to be aggressive. When they see a player they think can help them, they almost always make a call. And the Jets made plenty of calls in the days leading up to the trading deadline, according to multiple league sources.

But they were right not to make a deal - including for Dante Fowler, who on the surface sure looked like the edge rusher they so desperately need.

The Jets dropped to 3-5 on the season in Chicago on Sunday as the Bears were too strong for them and eased to a comfortable 24-10 win.

The Jets had only trailed 7-3 at the half with one breakdown making all the difference. Tarik Cohen was completed untouched on a 70-yard screen pass as the Jets sent a seven-man rush and left the speedy back completely unaccounted for.

Although they stifled the Bears' offense for the most part, the Jets couldn't get anything going on offense, even though they strung together a season-high 14-play drive to account for their only first-half points. Things didn't get any better in the third quarter as they failed to register a first down, enabling the Bears to build their lead.

THE GAME

The Jets (3-4) at the Chicago Bears (3-3) at Soldier Field in Chicago on Sunday, Oct. 28, at 1 p.m. ET.

THE WEATHER

The bright side is that this could be a lot worse. It's Chicago in late October, and a storm system is moving through, so if it's not dropping snow then consider it a win. However, even with temperatures in the low 50s, there are thunderstorms expected throughout the morning and they certainly could linger into the afternoon. And the winds will be whipping -- 15-20 mph. Sounds like last week at the Meadowlands (only slightly warmer), and the Jets remember how that went.

It is no secret the Jets' receiving corps is depleted, as it certainly showed during the team's loss to the Vikings last week.

Qunicy Enunwa, who has been Sam Darnold's favorite target through the first few weeks of the season, has been sidelined with an ankle injury. Now, Robby Anderson is banged up with his own ankle injury, and his status for Sunday's contest on the road against the Bears is up in the air.

With both these receivers out last week (Anderson was hurt mid-game), Jermaine Kearse was the only healthy starting receiver on the turf. That left Darnold having to throw to players like Charone Peake and Andre Roberts, who weren't getting the job done.

The Jets may not have landed All-Pro LB Khalil Mack when the Raiders put him on the trading block. But they were certainly all-in.

According to the Daily News' Manish Mehta, New York offered Oakland its 2019 first-rounder and 2020 second-rounder as well as "additional compensation" for the former AP Defensive Player of the Year.

The Bears would ultimately land Mack after giving up two first rounders -- one in 2019 and the other in 2020 -- as well as a 202 third-round pick and 2019 sixth-round pick in exchange for the linebacker, Oakland's 2020 second-rounder and a conditional 2020 fifth-rounder...

The Jets are in desperate need for another wide receiver, and one potential option has officially been taken off the market.

The Raiders traded Amari Cooper to the Cowboys in exchange for a 2019 first-round pick on Monday.

The Jets, who lost WR Quincy Enunwa for an extended amount of time with a foot injury and waived WR Terrelle Pryor -- who has a groin injury -- would have made sense from a needs standpoint to make a play for Cooper.

Former Jets defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson added insult to injury following Gang Green's 37-17 loss to the Vikings on Sunday.

Richardson, who had two tackles for the Vikings in the victory, took a shot at Jets fans after noticing a fair amount of purple jerseys in the seats at MetLife Stadium.

"We travel well...I noticed that," Richardson said, per the New York Post. "The Jets never really filled up stadiums anyway."

In the Jets' Week 7 loss to Minnesota, Sam Darnold ended up with an unforgiving statline, completing 17-of-42 passes for 206 yards and three interceptions. However, there were extenuating circumstances -- notably the blustery conditions, the decimated receiving corps and the pressure from Minnesota's formidable defense.

Let's look at some specific examples before we draw conclusions...

Vikings pull away from Jets 00:01:25
Todd Bowles, Sam Darnold, Jermaine Kearse and Jamal Adams comment on the Jets' mistake-riddled, 37-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The Jets could have made a huge statement by beating the Minnesota Vikings, a true NFC contender, in what would've been their biggest victory of the season. And the Jets' defense did all it could to make it happen.

But in the end, the Jets learned what should have been obvious:

Sam Darnold isn't ready to be a contender just yet...

For the second straight season, the Jets are 3-3 heading into Week 7, but this feels different.

Just ask backup quarterback Josh McCown.

McCown, who was the Jets starting quarterback last season, had the team off to a surprising 3-2 start heading into Week 6 before they sputtered and finished the season 2-9 to close with a 5-11 record.

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive: FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Sam Darnold was not the Jets' first choice to be their new franchise quarterback, even if he turns out to be the right choice. Kirk Cousins was always Plan A.

Of course, their pursuit of the 30-year-old Cousins turned out exactly how they feared it would. They offered him a fully guaranteed, three-year, $90 million contract, and he still took less to sign with the Minnesota Vikings.

But what if Cousins had said yes?

DL Leonard Williams (back) and WR Robby Anderson (hamstring) returned as full participants in Thursday's Jets practice after missing practice the previous day.

While that's good news for the Jets ahead of Sunday's Week 7 game against the Vikings, there were plenty of players who remained on the "did not participate" list.

RB Isaiah Crowell (foot), WR Terrelle Pryor (groin), DB Buster Skrine (concussion), DB Trumaine Johnson (quad), WR Quincy Enunwa (ankle) and DB Marcus Maye did not practice for the second straight day.

Jets prep for Vikes 00:01:24
Sam Darnold and Todd Bowles talk about the Vikings defense, the team's progress so far and home crowd support.

Jets QB Sam Darnold has felt the energy at MetLife Stadium this season and he hopes the home-field advantage gives his team yet another boost when they face the Vikings on Sunday.

"It's safe to say we want to win every single game, but definitely on a homestand [we want to] win every single game," Darnold said. "Because our fans are amazing ... It's awesome to be able to play in front of them. Whenever we make a big play or score a touchdown, we feel the momentum in the whole arena really shift. It's awesome to be able to feel that and continue to grow off of that as a team."
