GEICO SportsNite: Knicks win 00:02:39
Jeff Hornacek, Carmelo Anthony and Derrick Rose react to a big Knicks' win after they defeated the Spurs on Sunday afternoon, 94-90.

Carmelo Anthony scored 25 points and the New York Knicks salvaged the finale of a tumultuous five-game homestand by beating the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 on Sunday.

With Latrell Sprewell and a number of other former Knicks in attendance two days after Charles Oakley was banned, the current team pulled out a defensive performance from its past, limiting the Spurs to 36 percent shooting.

That came just two nights after the Knicks yielded 131 points in a dismal defensive performance against Denver, which came after losses to Cleveland and both Los Angeles teams to start the homestand.

Atkinson after home loss 00:00:32
Nets coach Kenny Atkinson talks about what went wrong in the Nets' 112-86 loss to the shorthanded San Antonio Spurs.

Patty Mills scored 20 points, LaMarcus Aldridge had 16 and the San Antonio Spurs rolled to a 112-86 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Monday night while playing without Kawhi Leonard and three other regulars.

Pau Gasol (broken bone, left hand) and Tony Parker (sore left foot) didn't even make the road trip, while Manu Ginobili was scheduled for a night off but couldn't have played anyway because of back spasms. Then Leonard, the Western Conference player of the week, was scratched.

The Spurs announced Leonard was resting, though coach Gregg Popovich said the All-Star forward had a sore left hand, which was wrapped after Leonard was hit while scoring a career-high 41 points in an overtime victory at Cleveland on Saturday.

  • After scoring 30 or more points in each of his last five games, Kawhi Leonard scored a career-high 41 points in the win, while also recording six rebounds and five assists. NEW YORK -- The San Antonio Spurs may be slightly shorthanded but Kawhi Leonard is hardly lacking in the scoring department.

Fresh off his stellar performance Saturday in Cleveland, Leonard and the Spurs visit the Brooklyn Nets on Monday night.

Leonard is averaging 25.5 points per game this season and is putting on an outstanding display of late. Leonard has been in double figures for 75 straight regular-season games and it includes 14 games with at least 30 points, which is four more than his career total before this season.

If the San Antonio Spurs weren't aware of how poorly they've played in the opening half of most games this season, they were forcefully reminded recently.

The Brooklyn Nets will carry a modicum of momentum and a modest one-game winning streak with them to San Antonio to play the Spurs on Saturday at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas. But don't expect the Spurs to be cordial hosts, even with the holidays looming.

San Antonio has struggled at home this season, going just 5-4. But Brooklyn hasn't won in Alamo City since George W. Bush's first year in office (and it's never won in the AT&T Center, which opened in October 2002), so the Nets understand the task at hand is a tall order.

NEW YORK - After you've enjoyed an undefeated high school basketball season and averaged 14.6 points, 8.8 rebounds and 6.5 assists at UCLA, you might think that you have it all figured out.

But now in his second season as a member of the San Antonio Spurs, former St. Anthony's and Paterson Catholic star Kyle Anderson knows better.

"Everything surprised me," the 6-foot-9 Fairview, N.J., native told SNY.tv before he went scoreless as the visiting Spurs beat the Knicks, 94-84, Monday night at Madison Square Garden.

Tonight, the Nets continue their road trip against NBA title contenders with a matchup with the San Antonio Spurs at the AT&T Center.

San Antonio enters today with a 24-7 record, good for first place in the Southwest division, and tied for the third-best record overall in the NBA. They would be the second seed in the Western Conference if the season ended today, and they've always been a formidable opponent for the Nets in the Gregg Popovich era.

The Spurs have beaten the Nets 10 straight times in the regular season, and 19 of their last 20 regular season meetings overall. Other than two wins in the 2003 NBA Finals, the Nets have not beaten the Spurs since January 22, 2002. The Spurs swept the two-game season series last year, winning by an average of 28 points per game.

Spurs started 7-for-9 and got to the rim over and over again.? Spurs had eight layups in the first quarter to take their biggest lead at 31-22 after one.

The Nets allowed the Spurs to take an 11 point lead early in the second with more points in the paint. Kris Humphries came on to give the Nets some energy with six quick points.? The Nets came back with a 11-to-2 run to bring the deficit to 38-35 Spurs.? Joe Johnson showed his offensive game in the second with seven points and ended the half with 12 points. Tony Parker led all scorers at half with 15 points.? The Spurs shot a solid 65% and won the points in paint battle 38-18 to lead 55-47 at half.
