Think the Giants have a tough schedule this season? Think again.

Based on 2013 results and the fact they finished third in the NFC East last season, Big Blue has drawn the 26th toughest in the league (119-137, .465).

But that doesn't mean they're in for a cakewalk in 2014, either. They will be playing on national television five times, have games vs the Seahawks and 49ers and will face four of the top six teams selecting atop this year's draft (Houston, St. Louis, Jacksonville and Atlanta).

In the NFL, the more you win, the harder they make it for you to keep on winning. You slip in the draft order, always have cap issues and are given difficult schedule.

Such is the case with the Giants who, thanks to a decade of winning seasons, have traditionally drawn one of the league's toughest schedules.

One of the residual effects of enduring a losing year is that you draw a less taxing schedule the following season.

Sunday's 7-3 loss to the Rangers might have felt like more than a loss, but it wasn't.

Sure, the Devils lost a chance to pull even with the Rangers in the standings, but losing those two points doesn't yet spell disaster.

In the coming weeks, the Devils will need to address what is a hole at first line left wing. Whether it's moving someone like Dainius Zubrus back to the first line and sliding someone Steve Bernier onto the line with Patrik Elias, the lack of another scorer on that top line is an issue that the Devils will have to tackle.

No matter what happens this Sunday vs the Redskins, the Giants will finish third in the NFC East. That means they will draw a third-place schedule for the 2014 season.

This year the Giants played a second-place schedule, drawing Seattle and Carolina in their at-large games. They were shut out in both.

The scheduled games so far for 2014 are the yearly home-and-home series vs their NFC East division rivals (Dallas, Philadelphia and Washington),?plus games against the NFC West and AFC South. The Giants will play Arizona, San Francisco, Houston and Indianapolis at home and St. Louis, Seattle, Jacksonville and Tennessee away.

The 24-17 win over Washington was not a banner one fantasy-wise for the Giants. They had just 16 first downs and 286 net yards on offense (206 passing, 80 rushing). They were, however, opportunistic and won the ballgame by tightening the screws on defense during the final three quarters.

Player snapshots courtesy of Rotoworld:

Eli Manning completed 22-of-28 passes for 235 yards, one touchdown, and an interception in Sunday night's Week 13 win over the Redskins.Manning started off slow, but was able to find success in the short passing game and had only one turnover. He hit Brandon Myers on a 22-yard pass to tie the game at the end of the first half and led the Giants to a comeback win with 10 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. Through 12 games, Manning has 2,995 yards, 15 touchdowns, and is behind only Geno Smith with 18 interceptions. He'll be just a QB2 option in Week 14 against the Chargers.

It looked like the Giants were going to have one of those games. On their first drive of the game, the Washington Redskins picked apart the Giants defense, knocking more than 7 minutes off the clock and took an early 7-0 lead, with ease. By halftime, the score was tied at 14, but?Robert Griffin III had completed 16 of 17 passes in the first half and it looked like Big Blue's defense had finally given up on a season that is now purely based on pride.

Who knows what was said in visitor's locker room, but whatever it was, it worked. The Giants defense, led by veteran Justin Tuck who bowed inside FedEx Field?four times last night, took over in the second half and held Washington to just 96 yards in the remaining two quarters.

A clutch play by Will Hill to strip Pierre Garcon in the late minutes of the fourth quarter would seal a victory for the Giants, pushing?their record to 5-7, two games behind the division leaders Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles, while eliminating the Redskins from any chance of playoff contention.

Back to work today for the Giants. They will practice today out at QDTC in what will be an indoor event given the wet weather.

Not much news today except the roster move placing C Jim Cordle on IR. His roster spot will be filed by Stephen Goodin, who's been a familiar figure here for the past two years or so.

Get ready for a lot of talk and a lot of promises from the Giants this week. It's been just one disappointment after another this season, and even as a member of the media who lives on quotes and news from the team, enough is enough. It's time for this team to play a complete game for the first time this year: win all three phases with no turnovers and blow somebody out. And then shut up about it. Nahhhhh....

The Dallas Cowboys came in here with the league's worst defense and all week the Giants were looking forward to taking full advantage of that fact. We're still waiting. The Giants could only muster two field goals in the first half despite running the ball for 108 yards between Andre Brown and Brandon Jacobs.

Turnovers, which killed the Giants in their first meeting with Dallas, have reared their ugly head again. Victor Cruz was stripped of the ball by Dallas DB Orlando Scandrick. The ball was scooped up by Jeff Heath an taken to the house for a 7-0 Dallas lead.

A 10-play, 74-yard drive that stalled on the Dallas 3. Josh Brown hit a 21-yard FG to narrow the score to 7-3.

RB John Conner (hip), CB Trumaine McBride (hip), DE Jason Pierre-Paul (shoulder), CB Terrell Thomas (knee) are all probable and are expected to play.

Who would have thought the Giants would start 2013 with six straight losses? Certainly not anyone who has been covering the team for any significant amount of time. But, now that it's happened, it's easy to see how it happened and why.

The Giants have yet to figure out how to make the best of their practice time. ?Under the news CBA, there are only so many sessions in which full contact is allowed. This has flummoxed Tom Coughlin and - color me wrong - but the team looked flat, slow and meek coming into the season as a result of not having enough contact in training camp. They were outhustled, outhit and too out of synch to recover from the errors (of commission and omission) that they committed.

Last season, the Giants were the defending Super Bowl champions and the Redskins were riding a red-hot RGIII to a division title. This year, the other two teams - Dallas and Philadelphia - are positioning themselves to battle for the NFC East title.

The Eagles gained 425 total yards in today?s 31-20 win at Tampa Bay. The Eagles are one of four teams in NFL history to gain at least 400 yards in each of its first six games joining this season?s Denver Broncos, the 2007 New England Patriots and the 1983 San Diego Chargers. This is the first time in NFL history in which two teams have accomplished the feat in the same season.

Alain Vigneault noted after the Rangers loss to the Kings that there are two forward spots up for grabs and that the decision will be made on Saturday and announced on Sunday.

Larry Brooks writes in the NY Post that the top candidates for those two spots are Arron Asham, Darroll Powe, Marek Hrivik, JT Miller and Chris Kreider.

Brooks says that Miller's "tenacious" play seems to have earned him a spot and that at this point it would be "stunning" if Miller doesn't make the team.

Following the Rangers loss to the Kings last night, Henrik Lundqvist chatted with Dave Maloney:

On going home, "It's been fun but it's time to start the real season. I think for everyone but for me personally it's time to take a deep breath and think about a few things and get ready for the seaosn. It's been a good trip, we didn't get the results that we wanted, but we got to work on a few things. It's been some tough games to play with broken plays and deflections, but you just need to go through some things. I started to feel more comfortable in the second half of this game and yea, it's time to go home."

via MSG, Alain Vigneault's post game comments after the Rangers loss to LA

  • On JT Miller, "he played real strong in back to back games. He skated well, when he had the chance to carry the puck and make some plays he made some plays. When he had a chance to play the man he played the man. I think that whole line, in terms of youth and potential played well. We are playing against a team that had 95% of their roster, won the Stanley Cup a few years ago and we didn't have a lot of PKers tonight and I think it showed early. I think we grinded it out and played hard, the goalie made some saves in the third and it's 4 games in 5 nights and now we have some decisions to make.
  • On more structure in front of Hank, "its coming along. We are throwing a lot of young guys in the lineup that are getting a first or second taste of NHL hockey. When you are playing against a team that won the Stanley Cup a few years ago, it could be intimidating but our guys played hard and tried their best."
  • On working with a smaller group, "yes....yes I am."
  • Was this Chris Kreider's best game, "I thought he did alright. You could see some puck protection moments. A few times he showed his size and speed. He didn't play last night so he was a little fresher and we saw some moments."
  • Did anyone change your mind tonight, "I can tell you that we have, in my opinion and we just talked quickly with management, we have three decisions we have to make. We talked about it, we will take the night to get back home and we will figure it out tomorrow."
  • Is there one on defense, "yes. I would say that there is one on defense and two up front."
  • DId Henrik ask to play in the third, "I talked to him at the end of the second period to see how he was feeling and he wanted to battle. He did and he played well.

  • Well that ends a pretty lackluster preseason for the Rangers that probably raised as many questions as it answered. The team was sloppy, tired at times and while they created offense, they didn't score. The defense wasn't at it's best and there still is a lot of work that needs to be done.
  • I thought Rick Nash skated the best he had in the preseason but he still looks like he needs to shake off more rust. He was turning the puck over a lot but also seemed to connect with Benoit Pouliot a few times.
  • For the longest time I didn't considered Darroll Powe as someone who had a chance at being with the Rangers this season but he was probably the most consistent player in the preseason and seems like he has secured a bottom six/PK role similar to Dominic Moore.
  • Chris Kreider had some nice moments as did Jesper Fast and the the line of JT Miller, Oscar Lindberg and Marek Hrivik. Miller had the goal and another strong game. Based on salary cap space it would seem that only one of Kreider or Miller will start the season with the Rangers and I think Miller may have the upper hand.

Ray Ferraro was a guest on TSN's Leafs Lunch today and spoke about the Rangers after broadcasting their loss to Vancouver last night.

Ferraro said, "they looked like a team that had been on the road for ten days, or 12 days. They looked disorganized at times, Lundqvist was terrible which is always a surprise to me because I think he is just a terrific goaltender. There were some goals, Henrik Sedin's second goal, Burrows was in front of the net with about 20 feet, literally 20 feet around him it looked like a pee-wee game, your like, where is everybody!"

"Dan Girardi, who is a really good player was on the ice for all five goals against last night. The Rangers looked about as bad as they possibly could look. They got some good news with Derek Stepan signing. They are about 2 and a half weeks away, they think, of getting Ryan Callahan back and 3 and a half weeks until Carl Hagelin can come back. That is 3 really good forwards."

Adam's Thoughts:

  • JT Miller was probably the best Ranger tonight and has probably vaulted himself from afterthought who will start in Hartford to probably the top candidate to take one of Carl Hagelin or Ryan Callahan's spot.
  • The rest of the young players have, as Joe noted in the case of Oscar Lindberg, leveled off. They have their moments but the more they play during the preseason the more it seems that they need some time in Hartford. Marek Hrivik is probably best positioned, of the group with Danny Kristo, Jesper Fast and Oscar Lindberg, to make the team out of camp.
  • I hope that on Thursday against Vancouver the Rangers dress what will likely be their opening night lineup. That full group needs a game together and the guys on the bubble should play on Friday in Vegas.
  • Marc Staal had another strong game and another goal. Besides the visor he looks like the All-Star player he was before his injury.

  • It's the first game in a week for this group and that rust showed early on as did the Rangers struggle to find a real rhythm.
  • Marek Hrivik was strong throughout the night and could have an inside track on a roster spot. His play has been good, but his cap hit of $685,000 is very appealing.
  • Marc Staal and John Moore were once again very good and Moore is showing he isn't afraid to mix it up if he has to.
  • Danny Kristo had four shots on goal and four more attempts. I think he could be a guy that spends a little bit of time in Hartford to round out some things and get called up relatively quickly. Jesper Fast was also making some things happen on the ice.

Alain Vigneault met with the media following the Rangers win in Philadelphia:

  • On going to the net to score, "it was one of the things that we have been talking to our guys about. It's a tough league to score. The quality of the goaltending is real solid and to score goals you gotta go into the tough areas and pay the price. We accomplished what we wanted to tonight. Philly came at us real hard, we moved the puck in a fashion that allowed us to break their forecheck. It was a hard fought game."
  • On Derick Brassard and Benoit Pouliot, "They both played to their strength. They moved the puck, they used their speed. They had some really good chances on the PP but it didn't pan out there. There seems to be a little bit of chemistry there and hopefully it improves."
  • On the pace, "I think both games were a little different. Tonight we did what we had to do to generate some offense. There wasn't a lot of room but we did what we had to do."
  • On young players, "I think we had four or five guys play their first NHL game tonight and I didn't feel that anybody was in awe. They all went out there and had good support from their teammates and it was a good game for a first for a lot of those guys."
  • On winning in the preseason, "you play to win. I love to win. Right now I am focused on evaluating players and the way we want to play and the way you need to play to have success."
  • On Marty Biron, "some of those shots were grade A scoring chances. Give him full marks, he came in there and made the saves he had to do. In the late third period with a few seconds left Cam did what he had to do and made a big save that gave us a chance to win."
