The Devils squeaked by with a 2-1 shootout win over Buffalo, but despite 35 shots on goal, the squad still struggled to pick up a win in regulation (Fire and Ice, Feb. 19).

The team posted 30-plus shots for the first time in 10 games, but it came down to Scott Gomez, who netted the deciding goal in the shootout.

?We had 20 (scoring) chances,? said Devils GM and interim coach Lou Lamoriello. ?The first thing you look at is chances to score and chances against. We had plenty of opportunities and that's all you can ask for. The win, I was pleased with the way we did a lot of things tonight: the penalty kill and the power play had a lot of good looks and 5-on-5 we were creating chances. We just have to put them in the net.?

1972- Denis and Mireille Brodeur welcomed a baby boy, Martin, into the world. That boy would grow into the Devils' -- and arguably the NHL's -- greatest goalie of all time.

The Devils were rumored to be interested at the beginning of Gomez's short process, but I never thought it was anything more than Lou doing his due diligence. I'm very interested to see what Gomez has left and how he fits into a Sharks team that is forever "one player away." He should, at the very least, add some playmaking depth to their forwards and be an interesting play on their second power-play unit.

The interest is nice, but I doubt it goes much further than that.?The Devils have a much bigger need on the wing than they do down the middle, with Travis Zajac, Adam Henrique and Jacob Josefson holding down center on the top 3 lines -- not to mention the fact that Dainius Zubrus, Ryan Carter and Patrik Elias all have the capability to play center. Unless the Devils have no faith in Josefson, I can't see a role for Gomez once Henrique returns in two weeks. I guess they could shift Josefson to the wing, but that seems like a short-sighted move. Plus, I'd have to imagine Gomez has at least one offer out there that offers him security beyond the next two weeks.? In reality, this is probably a case of the Devils kicking the tires on an intriguing free agent option while trying to figure out what they have in their own house.

UPDATE: And just like that, it appears the Devils are unsurprisingly out of the Scott Gomez sweepstakes.

As part of the new deal between the League and the Players, teams will have the opportunity to buyout two uninjured players this summer. But for whatever reason, teams couldn't buy anyone out right now. So what's a team with Wade Redden or Scott Gomez on it to do? Why pay them to sit at home and not get injured of course. That's just what the Rangers and Canadiens have been doing with Redden and Gomez. That is, until this weekend.

In a disturbingly fast amount of time (considering how long it took to end the lockout) the League and Players agreed to allow teams to use one of their compliance buyouts this season. As as of Saturday teams can put players making $3 million or more through waivers -- basically a formality -- and then will be free to buy them out after which the player can sign for another team or accept a minor league assignment. There's not much benefit for the team to do this. They'll still be dealing with the player's full cap hit all year. It's more of a way to allow the players to find an employer who wants them.

All that being said, it's not likely that Rick DiPietro would get bought out via this method. The Islanders could use a second goalie on the bench, as sitting Kevin Poulin or Anders Nilsson behind Nabokov for the year does those players no good. Also, in this special buyout period, the player has to agree to it. Rick DiPietro still wants to play and doesn't seem to mind doing it in an Islanders uniform.

Via everyone on Twitter today, the NHL and NHLPA agreed to tweak the compliance buyouts clause in the new CBA. The adjusted rule means teams can buy out players before Saturday's opener but still take the salary cap hit this season. Scott Gomez is almost 100 percent likely to be bought out by Montreal and he'll become an UFA once he passes through waivers (which he will). So the question is, do you want Scott Gomez back on the Devils?
