According to Larry Brooks in the NY Post, Glen Sather has offered to loan Sean Avery to another AHL team but has found no takers.

If Avery were to be loaned, or traded, he would still need to be placed on re-entry waivers and could still be claimed by another team.

Brooks says that there is still NHL interest in Avery if the Rangers decide to place him on re-entry waivers.

We have to make decisions for what we think is best for this team and that situation just didn't work out. People are going to say it's this that and the other thing, but I have never made any decision with a player, as far as being on the team, other than what is best for our hockey club. People can accuse and do a lot of different things and I am sure that Sean is upset and he has a right to be because he wants to play. It is a hard thing to do when you tell a player you're not going to play here. I understand him being upset but it's not going to determine how I go about business as far as what I think is best for this team.

John Tortorella on 24/7 talking about the decision to send Sean Avery back to Hartford.

In last night's game against Floria Sean Avery was a healthy scratch as John Tortorella inserted Erik Christensen into his spot in the lineup.

Tortorella said during his pregame press conference, via Ranger Rants, that he was having a hard time finding ice time for Avery and that other players have stepped up to do some of the things that Avery does:

Sean played some good games for us when he came up. I think it?s leveled off but I?m trying to be fair to him also with you guys. I haven?t put him on the ice, it?s awfully difficult to play that way. But I have other players doing the things I need done in situations that Sean is just not getting involved in.?

Torts said again today that"This is the same situation as any other player being brought up and we want to conduct it that way."

When asked if he thinks that Avery is a different case than any other player being called up, Torts said:

"For me it is (the same), for you and outside I understand that, but that doesn't change with the business I have here with the lineup. It doesn't matter to me whether the fans are grinding on a guy or loving him, it's not going to change my decision, it can't happen that way. You can't run a business that way."
Nick Kypreos writes about Avery at Sportsnet.

In the third period last night with the Rangers losing, chants calling for Sean Avery started to rain down from Madison Square Garden and come across very clearly on TV.

The issues with the Rangers, as Larry Brooks writes in the NY Post, aren't related to Sean Avery.

Avery?s absence from the scene -- likely permanent -- can?t be the reason the Rangers have looked so discombobulated. It can?t be the reason that Brad Richards is struggling to find both his own game and create a constructive partnership with Marian Gaborik.

?There was a lot of money on the table to go to Russia, but I don?t necessarily feel that was something that I wanted to do,? said Avery, who has been living in Middletown since he joined the Whale. ?There wasn?t enough money to go somewhere like Switzerland. I?m 100 miles from home, and that certainly factors into it, for sure.?
Avery said yesterday that he didn't' think that he would get called back up by the Rangers.

?Probably not,? Avery said of a possible return to Broadway. ?I?m not even going to think about it. It?s like you?re going to win the lottery. I guess some people do, but I?ve never had that mentality. ? I?m just going to go on, but I can play in the NHL, there?s no question about that. But I feel like a completely different player already. I?m just relaxed. This game is all mental.?
Avery also said that he turned down a lot of money from Russia.

Update: 3:44PM: On Avery, John Tortorella told the media in Vancouver:

?We go about our business here, and I know that?s a story I?m sure that?s going to be talked about a lot, because Sean was here and very well-liked, but again I?m coaching this hockey club here. Talk to Kenny (Whale coach Ken Gernander). I don?t know what?s going on down there. So I can?t comment on it.?

Adam: I still think that it was the right move to make Erik Christensen the spare forward over Sean Avery. Zucc and Wolski both won jobs and the plan, well the original plan was for Wolski on the top line, was for them to play with Derek Stepan. That changed when Wolski got hurt and Step got moved up to the top line. That left Zucc in no-mans land getting no minutes in a bad role on the fourth line.

Hockey Rodent also had an interesting look at Avery:

In the NY Post, Larry Brooks spoke with Glen Sather and Sather said that if Avery ends up in Hartford and plays well, he could get called back up.

Sather said that the decision to put Avery on waivers was made because of the evolution of the team:

"I thought Sean would come to camp and light it up, but that didn't happen," said Sather, who alerted teams to Avery's availability within the last week. "I don't think he had a bad camp, but other guys had better camps, and with that the case, we have to evolve as a team.
Avery seems to want to play in Europe over in Hartford and either way, I don't see the situation, unless truly decimated with injury, where Avery gets called back up. He would need to dominate in Hartford, but it would seem like if Avery thought he could get called back up, he wouldn't be entertaining the idea of playing in Europe.

To the surprise of some and the disappointment of many, the Sean Avery era in New York City is officially over after the club placed the veteran winger on waivers with the intent of sending him to the AHL should he go unclaimed. Torts had been clear in recent days that Avery was in a competition with fellow fan-favorite Erik Christensen (sarcasm folks) for the 13th and final forward spot on the roster. Shockingly Avery had been scratched from the lineup the last two contests while Christensen was in for both. Some read this as a sign Torts had made a decision already but was it going to be good or bad for Avery? Obviously we now know it was bad news.

If you?ve been on the Blueshirts United website today or probably many other websites that have covered this story, you?ve seen how many fans believe keeping Christensen over Avery is just a plain old bad move. The fans have spoken; what do the advanced stats have to say?

The following are tables showing how each player fared in several advanced statistical categories. Please note only the previous two seasons of Erik Christensen?s career are covered in his table. This comprises the length of Christensen?s tenure on Manhattan and seemed to be the fairest way to compare him with Avery, who spent most of the last four plus seasons plus with the Rangers. Also, these numbers reflect only five-on-five performance. This seemed fair since Christensen saw far more PP ice time than Avery so including those numbers would likely skew the analysis in Christensen?s favor.

The versatility thing is big as EC can play LW/C and be a star in the shootout if he comes into the lineup. It comes down to having Avery, a guy who can be positive on the ice, but also has the highest possibility for being a distraction on/off the ice as a healthy scratch. Mike Rupp took his spot in the lineup and the decision was made that his time with the organization was up.
