Sean Avery did an interview with Off The Record of TSN and spoke at length about his agitating ways on the ice.

Avery was asked about the idea of many of his teammates not liking him and said, "what I do is try to push peoples buttons constantly. If I ignored you then I probably had no interest in you whatsoever. That was me, I liked to push guys. I woke up every day and I acted like that was going to be my last day to do that certain job. I had to be on edge in all facets of my life. I am an intense guy. With my teammates a lot of it came down to jealousy. I'm not saying that maybe guys were jealous that I played by my own rules, or that I pushed guys in the wrong direction."

Sean Avery did an interview with Off The Record of TSN about his career and what led to the end of his hockey career.

Avery said that he finally got tired of the restrictions that were put on him as a player and he felt he pushed the boundaries as far as he could.

He said, "as a sport there are restrictions on everyone. A team says that we are paying you and we are going to dictate your identity and how you act in the real world. Then they ride them as hard as they can and? at the end it's 'thanks for your service and we will invite you back for some sort of ceremony at some point."

One week ago "hockey god" Sean Avery was on Q104.3 for an interview.

Avery's comments are below:

  • "I am retired. I had to say it was a joke because there was some complications with me maybe not getting paid."
  • On why he is retiring, "I played twelve years and I had a really amazing opportunity to step into a line of work that I was passionate about for the last five or six years of my career. I played twelve years, how long do you have to play?"
  • "I loved playing in NY and consider myself a New Yorker. If you can walk with your head up high and you had a great career and had fun doing it and didn't get hurt and still have half a brain than I think you are ahead of the game."
  • "I am legitimately working in the fashion space. It's a good gig, I am extremely busy, we have a lot going on."
  • On Marty Brodeur, "he could use a b12 shot"
  • "I can tell you one thing, the New York Rangers would have beat the New Jersey Devils this year if Sean Avery was on the team."
  • "I have always been right when I said something. I shot my mouth off often but I was always right and everything I said was always the truth and right."
  • On what is next, "marriage and children should be on the list."
  • On the women that Alex Rodriguez has dated compared to the women he has dated, "I am still waiting for someone that is hot."

Last I read he announced that he was retiring. So we sent him his retirement papers, but of course he wouldn?t sign them. So I don?t have any idea what he?s doing.

He was in Hartford for the last month. He had a difficult time there. We didn?t put him on the clear-day list. So as far as I?m concerned, I really haven?t spoken to him. If he?s going to retire, he should retire. If he?s not, maybe somebody?ll give him a job next year.

In the NY Post, Larry Brooks writes that there is an NHL team, maybe two, that has told Rangers GM Glen Sather that they would take Sean Avery if he was placed on on re-entry waivers.

Brooks says that Sather is willing to trade Avery and take on a player in the AHL making more money, but that re-entry waivers is not an option right now because of the salary cap impact:

Avery?s full cap hit for the remainder of the season is just a tick over $890,000 as of tomorrow. Therefore, the Rangers would be hit with approximately $445,000 of dead cap space upon a re-entry claim.

We have to make decisions for what we think is best for this team and that situation just didn't work out. People are going to say it's this that and the other thing, but I have never made any decision with a player, as far as being on the team, other than what is best for our hockey club. People can accuse and do a lot of different things and I am sure that Sean is upset and he has a right to be because he wants to play. It is a hard thing to do when you tell a player you're not going to play here. I understand him being upset but it's not going to determine how I go about business as far as what I think is best for this team.

In last night's game against Floria Sean Avery was a healthy scratch as John Tortorella inserted Erik Christensen into his spot in the lineup.

Tortorella said during his pregame press conference, via Ranger Rants, that he was having a hard time finding ice time for Avery and that other players have stepped up to do some of the things that Avery does:

Sean played some good games for us when he came up. I think it?s leveled off but I?m trying to be fair to him also with you guys. I haven?t put him on the ice, it?s awfully difficult to play that way. But I have other players doing the things I need done in situations that Sean is just not getting involved in.?

Torts said again today that"This is the same situation as any other player being brought up and we want to conduct it that way."

When asked if he thinks that Avery is a different case than any other player being called up, Torts said:

"For me it is (the same), for you and outside I understand that, but that doesn't change with the business I have here with the lineup. It doesn't matter to me whether the fans are grinding on a guy or loving him, it's not going to change my decision, it can't happen that way. You can't run a business that way."

Just like in February 2007, when the Rangers were floundering and Sather reached out to Los Angeles to trade for Avery, and just like in February 2009, when the Rangers were floundering and Sather reached out to Dallas to bring Avery out of the black hole into which he had been consigned following his "sloppy seconds" comments and back to New York via the re-entry process, just like then, the Rangers are reaching out for Avery.

Desperate times and all that.
