Hopefully, David Wright makes a brisk and complete recovery from his concussion, but while he's recuperating, someone needs to play thirdbase for the New York Mets.? When the Mets placed? Wright on the Disabled List, the team purchased the contract of 32-year old IF Andy Green (pictured) from AAA Buffalo.? The move was met with scorn and derision both in the comments section here and my email inbox.

It seems likely, that as he did on Sunday, Fernando Tatis will get the bulk of the playing time at? 3B in Wright's absence.? Green, who was hitting .270/.333/.410 with AAA Buffalo, while playing at second and third, and even a few innings in RF, will serve as the backup infielder.

What about Daniel Murphy?? And what about Nick Evans? And Shawn Bowman?

AAA: Buffalo Bisons (1) @ SYRACUSE CHIEFS (7)The Bisons struggles continued as they fell to 1-10 on the season. LHP Jonathan Niese (pictured) didn't fare well once again, allowing seven runs (five earned) and nine hits over 5 1/3 innings (0 BB / 6 K)? to suffer his second loss. He's allowed twelve runs and twenty-two hits in just 12.1 innings during his first three starts. At the plate OF Fernando Martinez was 2-for-4 with a double and C Robinson Cancel also added two hits. OF Nick Evans was 0-for-4 and saw his average drop to .122 (5-for-41).

AA: Portland Sea Dogs (2) @ BINGHAMTON METS (4)RHP Ryan Coultas made his second professional start and held his own, going 5 1/3 innings and allowed two runs, four hits, and a walk while striking out three. LHP Adam Bostick picked up the win, his second, with a scoreless 1 2/3 innings. LHP Roy Merritt worked a perfect 1 2/3 for his Eastern League leading fifth save. 3B Shawn Bowman and 1B Lucas Duda each added two hits and a home run a piece in the victory.

Yesterday the Binghamton Mets fell to the Springfield Cardinals 9-5. RHP Brad Holt started and went three innings, allowing four hits, three runs, and one walk while striking out four.

3B Shawn Bowman had another big day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. He went 2-for-3 while playing in a Bisons' exhibition game on Friday. C Francisco Pena also had a single and an RBI in the game.

the organization is trying to get these prospects as much action as possible, which is why you're seeing guys like Holt and Pena playing on teams that they won't be starting the year with... Shawn most likely will be starting with the B-Mets with Holt and Pena ticketed for St. Lucie, although nothing is definite yet...

Yesterday the Buffalo Bisons fell 2-1 to Memphis in their second exhibition game of the year. Highlights included OF Fernando Martinez going 1-for-4 and 3B Shawn Bowman finishing 2-for-3.

Their game today against the Zephyrs was rained out, according to Buffalo's Director of Public Relations Brad Bisbing. The team will play Memphis again tomorrow at 1 PM EST.

as I said a few weeks ago when I previewed him for the WBC, one of Shawn's primary objectives this season will be to improve his plate discipline (just 2 BB in 113 at AA last year)... although he played in this game with the Bisons, it's pretty likely he'll be starting the year with the B-Mets...

The Binghamton Mets announced last week that they will play 11 exhibition games between March 18 and April 2 in Florida before heading north to open their season April 8th against the Trenton Thunder, the Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees.

The schedule includes five games against the Jacksonville Suns (AA affiliate of the Marlins) and six games against the Springfield Cardinals (AA affiliate of the Cardinals).

Mets minor league pitchers and catchers reported to camp last Friday while position players will report on Wednesday. However many of the teams top prospects have already been at the Mets' Port St. Lucie complex working and / or seeing action with the major league club over the last few weeks.

The second World Baseball Classic will kick off Thursday with Pool A action inside the Tokyo Dome in Japan while the other three pools will begin play Saturday and Sunday. For the most part, all those within the Mets organization left Sunday to join their respective teams.

We all know the obvious names participating from the Mets: Carlos Beltran (Puerto Rico), Carlos Delgado (Puerto Rico), Alex Cora (Puerto Rico), Pedro Feliciano (Puerto Rico), J.J. Putz (USA), David Wright (USA), Oliver Perez (Mexico), Jose Reyes (Dominican Republic), and Francisco Rodriguez (Venezuela). However the organization also has several other prospects and minor leaguers who were selected to take part in the tournament:

  • SS Ruben Tejada (Panama) - The young infielder, known for his defense, made his full season debut last year in the FSL at just 18 and hit .229 in 131 games. He is a very good defensive shortstop and will most likely begin the season with St. Lucie again. He's still just 19.
  • 3B Shawn Bowman (Canada) - Shawn has slipped in organizational rankings over the last few seasons because of injuries, but the skills are still there. He lit up the FSL to begin 2008, hitting .340 (33-for-97) in 26 games which earned him a July promotion to Binghamton. A solid fielder, he needs to improve his plate discipline (just 2 BB in 113 AB at AA).
  • 3B Stefan Welch (Australia) - Toby wrote in his top prospect series that the "Australian Welch has shown gap power from a line drive stroke and an tall thin frame as a teenager." He hit .281 (71-for-253) in 63 games in the Appalachian League with 9 triples, 14 doubles, and 4 homers.
  • OF Jesus Feliciano (Puerto Rico) - Now 29, he's spent 11 seasons in the minors without getting a call-up to the majors. Jesus has been in the Mets organization since 2007 and hit .308 (157-for-509) with 3 homers, 21 doubles, and 55 RBI last season for Triple-A New Orleans.
this is a good opportunity for fans to see some of these prospects who they wouldn't otherwise have had the the chance to see... they'll be playing against premier talent and there's no question that it's an exellcent experience for younger players to go through and learn from... it can only help as they move up to higher levels...

Toby's Note at 4:39 PM Thursday:

I messed this up in my original post.? The Mets must add Carp to protect him.? Players are now eligible for? their fourth and fifth rule five drafts....

Thursday, November 20th is the deadline for MLB teams to file their reserve lists with the commissioner's office identifying players on the roster for the MLB and all minor league rosters.? These are lists used for the Rule 5 Draft on December 11th in Vegas.? (Lets pause here and acknowledge the genius of placing nearly every baseball executive, all of the agents, the major media, and thousands of job seekers let loose in Vegas for five days.)

Paul Greco of Gotham Baseball has been hanging out in Arizona talking to players and clearly sitting with the scouts at the games.? He posted a really strong player by player review for both the Mets and Yankees.

Excerpts of his commentary follows, as usual, mine is italicized.

P ? Eddie Kunz : Although he's been a closer in the minor leagues, the scouts told me that he is not aggressive enough to be a closer at the major league level.? As a matter of fact, two scouts I spoke with went as far to say that Eddie Kunz would be no better than a situational right handed pitcher.

The Arizona Fall League released the first draft of its rosters Wednesday. The Mets assigned 23 year old RHP Tobi Stoner and 25 year old LHP Jason Vargas, 21 year old C Josh Thole, 23 year old INF Dan Murphy and 23 year old 3B Shawn Bowman to the Peoria Saguaros. The Mets can send two more pitchers to the league.

The AFL begins play on October 7th, which happens to be the day that both NL Division Series are tentatively scheduled for game five if they go that far. So hopefully Dan Murphy?s resting up for the NLCS.

Stoner is 4-6 with a 4.62 ERA in 14 starts for Binghamton. In 74 IP, he?s fanned 57 (6.9 K/9) and walked 26 (3.2 BB/9).
