Jets DE Sheldon Richardson says head coach Todd Bowles has been more strict than in the past, per Darryl Slater of NJ.com.

Bowles has been left with a young team following the Jets' roster purge that including veterans like C Nick Mangold and LB David Harris. With his job possibly in jeopardy, he has been putting emphasis on working harder.

"It's completely different from the last couple years," Richardson said at minicamp. "A lot more strict now. We weren't loose [in the past], but it's a lot more strict now. It's even more enforced than what it has been in the past."

Jets DE Sheldon Richardson wants to stay with the team for the rest of his caeer, but is not open to giving a hometown discount.

The Jets, who finished 5-11 last season, are entering a rebuilding phase. But Richardson wants to be a part of it.

"A lot of guys just want to go jump on a bandwagon," Richardson told Manish Mehta of the NY Daily News earlier this week. "Older guys. Later in their career, it's easy to go jump into a good situation. It's a free market, so by all means, do your thing. But me personally, I like to make history, not be a part of it."

Jets DE Sheldon Richardson wasn't afraid to voice his disapproval of the Jets cutting veteran LB David Harris, per Manish Mehta of NY Daily News.

Jets owner, Woody Johnson, made the call to cut Harris as he looks to shed payroll for the upcoming season. Upon hearing the news, Richardson said what many were most likely thinking.

"It shocked the s--t out of me," Richardson said. "It is a business. But after a while it don't become a business. Dave wasn't (greedy). I know him, so I know he would have taken something (a fair and reasonable pay cut). I know he wasn't busting nobody over there. He don't want to play for free, either."

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - The Jets swear they are not listening to the noise outside of their locker room, where they are surrounded by a near-universal prediction of doom and gloom. Some are bracing for an historic disaster of a season. Some are embracing it, hoping that when the dark clouds disperse there's a rainbow leading to USC quarterback Sam Darnold.

But what if the Jets aren't just in a state of denial? What if they sense something different going on with their rebuilding team? What if their dysfunctional, ugly, 5-11 season last year was rock bottom, and now there really is nowhere to go but up?

Jets defensive end Sheldon Richardson said he is committed to being with New York for the 2017 season amid trade rumors that have surrounded him over the past several months.

Richardson acknowledged he has heard the rumors and is open to the possibility that this season, his fifth since the Jets drafted him 13th overall in 2013, could be his last with New York.

"I'd be a fool not to be open to it," he said, according to Newsday's Bob Glauber. "I just want to go out there and have a great season. I can get my trade value to go up. I can get traded during the season. Might get a first-round, second-round pick. You never know."

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Sheldon Richardson may think that Brandon Marshall was the source of the Jets' unhappy locker room last season, but Marshall's new Giants coaches and teammates see him in an entirely different way.

"Brandon has been a breath of fresh air for us," head coach Ben McAdoo said on Thursday. "He comes out, he works hard at football, you can see he loves football. It's refreshing to have a guy that's been as productive as he has over his career and has played as long as he's played, being out here working the way he works; you can really see he loves the game."

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - He's been a disappointment on and off the field for most of the last two seasons, and he knows the Jets have tried their best to ship him somewhere else. Yet as the Jets begin preparing for the 2017 season, Sheldon Richardson is still on their roster.

And the Jets believe -- or at least hope -- he's returning more motivated than ever before.

"After just one day in OTAs, and watching him move around, this guy -- I shouldn't say (he has) a chip on his shoulder," said Jets defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers. "I think he kind of has something to prove."

That seems obvious given how the last two seasons have gone. He's been suspended twice -- four games in 2015 for violating the league's substance abuse policy, and once last season after he was arrested for resisting arrest and other traffic violations when he was caught driving 143 miles per hour with a loaded gun and a 12-year-old in his car. He also had a disappointing five sacks in 11 games in 2015, and a dismal 1 ½ sacks in 15 games last year...

Sheldon Richardson has been a regular at the Jets' offseason workouts, knowing every day there could be his last. He knows the Jets tried to trade him last season, and he surely knew they tried again during last week's NFL Draft.

But if he's bothered by that at all, his teammate, Leonard Williams, says it's hard to tell.

"I'm sure he's heard the rumors," Williams said on a conference call with the media on Wednesday. "He's not letting it affect him. He's just working while he is here and I respect him for that."

Jets GM Mike Maccagnan has spent a lot of time this offseason looking at the quarterbacks in this draft. But that isn't necessarily unusual. In fact, he said, the Jets "feel pretty good" about the quarterbacks they already have.

"We have the two young guys (Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty) and we like both of them in terms of ability and potential," the Jets GM said during his pre-draft press briefing on Monday. "We feel pretty good about the guys we have."

That hasn't stopped him from looking, of course, and at least considering the possibility of the Jets drafting a quarterback with the No. 6 overall pick. They have scouted the top quarterbacks in the draft heavily this offseason and many believe the Jets will take one in that spot...

PHOENIX - The Jets weren't just bad last season, they were downright dysfunctional at times. Todd Bowles knows it. Everybody knows it. And the Jets coach expects that to change.

Just don't expect him to drop the hammer on his players, or tighten the rules on what at times appeared to be his loosely-run ship. Bowles, as a former player, understands that stuff happens. And he doesn't plan on taking control with some draconian approach.

The free-agent market has thinned out a bit, but the Jets still have plenty of holes to fill. Yes, they still need a quarterback. But they have many other needs, too.

The good news is they still have a decent amount of salary-cap space and there is still help available. Here's a look at some of the non-quarterbacks still on the market who could be a fit:

CB Morris Claiborne (Cowboys) - The former sixth-overall pick (2012), he was long considered a bust before he began to finally play up to expectations last season - right up until he injured his groin. He's still only 27 and as the Jets begin a youth movement in the secondary it might be worth giving him a chance to prove his start last season wasn't a fluke. They'd need to move fast, though, since word is he could soon end up with the Ravens.

Ralph Vacchiano, SNY.TV:

Players always talk about the non-financial intangibles when they enter free agency, about their desire to find the right situation and play for a winner. But the truth about free agency often is this: Money talks.

Still, the real top players in the market sometimes have choices to make when the money is close, and that's where things could get interesting for Mike Maccagnan and the New York Jets. He's got the money to spend to begin the makeover his roster (approximately $37 million in cap space and maybe more to come). But if his top targets end up with multiple, lucrative options, does the Jets GM have the rest of the package to lure those players to New York?

It could be an interesting question right off the bat with a report already emerging that the Chicago Bears are ready to battle the Jets for free-agent quarterback Mike Glennon. Not that the Bears are in great shape -- they're coming off a 3-13 season and have missed the playoffs the last six seasons just like the Jets. Maybe Glennon, or any player, could make the argument that the Jets are the more attractive spot between the two.

The NFL offseason may be off to a slow start, but things are surely about to pick up with cuts and contract restructures on their way, and with the scouting combine just two weeks away.

With that in mind, here is our weekly look at some of the biggest questions facing the Jets, what's new about them, where they stand on finding an answer, and if any of the issues have changed.

1. Who is their quarterback?

They of course haven't answered this yet, but they did answer who'll be coaching the quarterbacks: new offensive coordinator John Morton and new quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates. Neither has an extensive resume at their current positions -- or really working with quarterbacks -- which is interesting if they're going to be entrusted with developing a young quarterback.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - The words came from his heart and the intent was to inspire, even if the sincerity and the message was often lost on some of his teammates. That was the problem Brandon Marshall faced this season. He wanted to unite his teammates. He divided them instead.

It's not that the Jets' locker room problems were his fault -- not by a longshot -- but there's no doubt the veteran receiver was in the center of it for much of the miserable, 5-11 season.

Marshall on 2016 struggles 00:03:55
Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall discusses a disappointing 2016 season and where he feels his NFL career is going moving forward.

Ralph Vacchiano, SNY.tv

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Though he called this "probably my most frustrating year" in the NFL, and though he at times became a polarizing figure in his own locker room, Brandon Marshall made it clear he wants to be back with the Jets next season. He even joked "I'll play for free."

Now the Jets have to decide if the 32-year-old receiver with the declining production and controversial leadership style is worth bringing back, even at that price.

Marshall, of course, believes he is even after one of his least productive seasons - 59 catches for 788 yards and three touchdowns. But his lack of production is only part of his equation. Marshall is due $7.5 million next season -- a bargain for an "elite" receiver, but otherwise a hefty price. And perhaps more importantly, he spent much of this season in the eye of the Jets' locker room storm.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - The "dark cloud" that Darrelle Revis said hung over the Jets for most of the season caused a fractured locker room that never seemed to heal. And at least one Jet is convinced that the cloud of internal problems led directly to the team's miserable, losing year.

"It didn't help us," receiver Quincy Enunwa said on Monday. "You look at our record, it really hindered our play. A big reason for that is when you see the bad things that are going on, you kind of feel like you almost lose your purpose. You go into the season and you don't want to play for self. You want to play for team. But when team doesn't feel like a team, then you've got to start playing for self."

That is a damning assessment, and it seems to sum up the 5-11 Jets perfectly - a team that never really seemed like a team. They all came into the season feeling, as Enunwa said, "that we were a really good team." Then they were blown out in Kansas City in Week 3 and that served as a flashpoint for their new reality.

Clearly, he wasn't focused on football or the Miami Dolphins two hours before a prime-time game."

During the Snapchat, Richardson says, in part, "you know, pregame sh*t, where the ho's at?" He then says, "f*ck this," followed by either "game" or "guy," with the last word somewhat unintelligible.
