Knicks on roster changes 00:01:21
Knicks coach David Fizdale and forwards Julius Randle and Kevin Knox talk about this year's roster coming together

Dennis Smith Jr. is expected to make his preseason debut on Wednesday against the Hawks, which adds a layer of intrigue to the Knicks' starting point guard competition.

Smith Jr. missed New York's first two preseason games due to a back strain. He returned to practice over the weekend and, barring a setback, will make his preseason debut on Wednesday.

The Knicks had taken a cautious approach with Smith Jr.'s ailment.

Here are a few takeaways from the Knicks' 104-99 win over the Wizards:

MORRIS EJECTED: Marcus Morris was ejected 13 seconds into the second half for doing something you don't see often. First, he appeared to hit Justin Anderson, his defender, with an elbow when he swung his arms through to create space. That happens regularly in the NBA. Here's the odd part. He then hit Anderson in the head with the ball and started jawing with him. He received a flagrant-two, presumably for the whole sequence.

Based on what we've heard from players at Knicks training camp, defense has been a priority this week. You'll get your first look at the Knicks' defense in action on Monday when they open the preseason in Washington.

Something to expect? Ball pressure. That's been a point of emphasis during camp.

"Me and all my teammates, we pay a lot of attention to pressuring the ball on defense. And not letting the opposing team be comfortable offensively," Frank Ntilikina, one of the team's top defenders, said Sunday. "So yes, you will see that from the Knicks."

A few notes and observations from Knicks training camp on Thursday:

RJ Barrett spent some time talking to Hall of Famer Bernard King on Thursday.

King didn't want to reveal too much about the conversation, but he seems impressed by the Knicks' No. 3 overall pick.

Evaluating Frank Ntilikina 00:00:56
Ian Begley addresses the strong showing from Frank Ntilikina after a good summer playing for France. Also, Dennis Smith Jr. turned heads.

A lot has changed for Knicks PG Dennis Smith Jr. this summer. And it wasn't just his jumper.

Smith spoke to the media at practice Wednesday, and he admitted being down about 15 pounds since the end of last season. The Knicks had told him to cut weight, and he did just that.

Of course, that came with some food sacrifices.

Frank Ntilikina ready for season 00:02:20
New York Knicks point guard Frank Ntilikina feels some added confidence in his game after competing in the FIBA World Cup this summer.

Ian Begley, SNY.tv Twitter |

Frank Ntilikina learned something important about himself during France's run to the bronze medal in the FIBA World Cup:

"How good I can be playing basketball," the guard said on Wednesday. "It's simple on both sides of the court. A competition like that brought me a lot of confidence."

If Ntilikina can play with the kind of confidence/competence in New York that he showed with the French National Team last month, maybe he earns a spot in David Fizdale's rotation.

Rarely has a season ended with such a strong feeling about what might have been. The Mets went 46-26 in the second half, looking every bit the part of a playoff team with Seth Lugo and Justin Wilson doing the heavy lifting at the back end of the bullpen.

Yet they were realistically out of the Wild Card chase with a week to go in the season, and they weren't even close in the NL East, 11 games behind the first-place Braves and seven back of the Nationals.

It's no mystery as to what went wrong, of course, most of it during a 40-50 first half. Edwin Diaz set a major-league record by giving up 15 ninth-inning home runs, while Jeurys Familia allowed 42 walks in 60 innings -- the two of them turning the Mets' bullpen into a dumpster fire for much of the season.

John Harper, SNY.tv | Twitter |

Early Sunday afternoon, when Pete Alonso was still basking in the glow of Saturday night's historic 53rd home run -- the most ever for a major-league rookie -- he was telling SNY's Steve Gelbs in a pre-game interview that one of his primary goals going into next season is to improve his defense at first base.

"I want to win a Gold Glove," he said.

Suffice it to say that spoke not only to Alonso's pursuit of greatness, but the outlook for the Mets in the years to come.

Knicks front office speaks 00:02:21
New York Knicks president Steve Mills and GM Scott Perry explain their offseason roster construction and why they missed on big free agents.

It's Knicks Media Day out in Tarrytown, NY, and it's also the first time team president Steve Mills and GM Scott Perry discussed their free agency moves.

The result wasn't what Knicks fans were hoping for, as the superstars like Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, Kawhi Leonard and others found their way to different teams. However, Mills and Perry had multiple plans in place if something like this were to go down.

So the roster that they have put together with training camp kicking off tomorrow is one that they did envision when prepping for free agency.

Mets end with a flourish 00:01:51

It was simply meant to be.

Well, it was the perfect time to do so.

Mets complete sweep of Braves 00:01:29
Dominic Smith made his return from the IL in dramatic fashion, launching a walk off 3-run HR in the 11th inning as the Mets swept the Braves

To finish off their season, the Mets did it with a grand walk-off to defeat the Braves, 7-6, at Citi Field. >> Box score

Five Takeaways from Sunday's game

1) In an improbable, feel-good finish to a season that was somewhat appropriate for a Mets' team that came back from the dead with a second-half comeback, Dom Smith hit an 11th-inning, game-winning home run in his first at-bat since July 26th. Which, naturally, led to one last tear-off-the-jersey moment, an instant tradition that also became a trademark of a team that pulled off some keep-hope-alive, walk-off wins at Citi Field down the stretch.

How does Dennis Smith Jr.'s new shot look in five-on-five scrimmages?

"It's a lot better," David Fizdale said on Tuesday. "It's a lot less movement, it's more efficient. He put in a lot of time on the fundamentals this summer. But it's a process. He'll have days where it's not as great. But I think consistently now he's got a shot that has a better chance of going in."

Smith Jr. has worked extensively on his shot this summer with Knicks assistant coach Keith Smart. He shot 42 percent overall and 32 percent from beyond the arc this season. The Knicks, obviously, would like to see those percentages increase in Smith Jr.'s third NBA season.

The Mets (83-75, 5.5 GB for second Wild Card) wrap up their four-game series with the Marlins (55-103) at Citi Field on Thursday at 7:10 p.m. on SNY.

Mets Notes

The Mets were eliminated from playoff contention on Wednesday night after the Milwaukee Brewers clinched the second Wild Card. The team still went on to beat the Marlins 10-3 as Jacob deGrom was dominant in his final start of the season. The potential Cy Young Award winner threw seven scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and one walk. He ends the season with 23-straight scoreless innings pitched and 255 total strikeouts. Pete Alonso hit his 51st home run of the season, as the first baseman is one homer shy of tying the rookie home run record held by the Yankees' Aaron Judge. Prior to Thursday's game against the Marlins, the team activated Dom Smith from the 60-Day IL and announced Jeff McNeil will need surgery for his fractured wrist that he suffered in Wednesday's game.

With just four games left in the season, the Mets have activated Dom Smith from the 60-Day IL.

The 24-year-old has been out since July 26 due to a stress fracture in his left foot. He became eligible to return to active roster on Sept. 25 after moving from the 10- to 60-day IL.

Smith is hitting .278 on the season with 22 RBI and 10 home runs in only 88 games. However, it's still the most games he's played in a season with the Mets, after playing just 49 games in 2017 and 56 games in 2018.

Michael Conforto
Michael Conforto

John Harper, SNY.tv | Twitter |

In what turned out to be the Mets' last gasp Monday night, and realistically the 2019 season as well, Michael Conforto struck out swinging with two runners on base to end the seventh inning.

That was fitting for a team that will have a number of important decisions to make this winter if it is going to make the jump from nice second half to legitimate contender in 2020, because in many ways, Conforto is a perplexing case.

He's had a solid season, highlighted by his 31 home runs. But in a year when more than 50 players around the Majors have already hit 30-plus long balls, that doesn't necessarily make you a star.

There are only 13 games left in the regular season, but Dominic Smith is still hoping to return. And he took a big step on Monday.

Smith, who had been with the team, has traveled to Florida to start doing "more baseball activities and maybe getting some at-bats," manager Mickey Callaway said before Monday night's game in Colorado.

Smith, who has been out since July 26 due to a stress fracture in his left foot, ran and hit off a tee last week for the first time since suffering the injury, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.

The 24-year-old Smith was recently transferred from the 10- to 60-day IL, meaning he won't be eligible to return to the active roster until Sept. 25.

Mets infielder Robinson Cano
Mets infielder Robinson Cano

Danny Abriano, SNY.tv | Twitter |

With his lightning-quick recovery from a torn hamstring surprising even the Mets' training staff, Robinson Cano is on track to rejoin the team after a rehab stint with Short-Season Brooklyn -- with that return potentially imminent.

Cano had been heating up before his injury, with 10 hits in 19 at-bats, including four doubles and a home run. But while he is expected to return, it isn't yet known if he's healthy enough to play in a starting capacity.

If Cano is ready to be more than a bench player upon his return, it's safe to say two things:

Mets' Jeff McNeil
Mets' Jeff McNeil

John Harper, SNY.tv | Twitter |

The beauty of Jeff McNeil is that he is as versatile defensively as he is wizard-like offensively, and with a huge series against the Cubs this week the Mets need to get creative in how they use him to help kick-start a suddenly sluggish offense.

For starters that means getting more left-handed hitters in the lineup against Yu Darvish in Tuesday's series opener, since the Cubs' righthander has been significantly more vulnerable to lefties than righties this season.

The most logical move is playing McNeil at third base, allowing Joe Panik to stay at 2B, and sitting the slumping Todd Frazier.

Most everything about the Mets' second-half run has been remarkable, but the emergence of J.D. Davis and Amed Rosario, in particular, has bulked up a youthful position-player core that suddenly gives this franchise an entirely different feel, both in the present and the future.

Add that duo to Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil and Michael Conforto, and you can make the case the Mets have five cornerstone players, four of which are under contractual control at least through the 2023 season.

And that's not counting Dom Smith, who probably looms now as a valuable off-season trade chip, or Brandon Nimmo, who figures to be an important player when he comes back from his neck injury, even if it's more for depth at this point.

Overshadowing the Mets' loss to the Braves on Tuesday night in Atlanta was the sight of Jeff McNeil pulling up lame and grabbing his hamstring after trying to leg out an infield hit in the ninth inning.

McNeil walked off the field with a noticeable limp and said after the game that he "felt a little snag" and was hoping it was just a cramp.

But while the Mets got good news after McNeil's MRI, he has been placed on the 10-day IL.

Lost a bit in the shuffle of the Mets' 2019 season has been the remarkably consistent performance of J.D. Davis.

Acquired by Brodie Van Wagenen in the offseason for three prospects, Davis' path to playing time initially seemed blocked at the big league level.

His primary position of third base was covered by Todd Frazier. Davis played some first base with the Astros, but with Pete Alonso and Dominic Smith at first base in New York, that wasn't going to happen, either. His outfield experience only consisted of five games in left field in 2018, but that has increased with 30 games in left this season.

Dom Smith reacts to defense woes 00:01:53
Dom Smith had a few defensive miscues vs. the Padres, but he and his manager are confident he'll rebound.

For most of the season, the Mets have gotten by defensively with Dominic Smith, a natural first baseman, starting in left field. He had an adventurous night in the outfield in Wednesday's loss to San Diego, though.

With the Padres leading 2-1 in the third and Manny Machado on second, Hunter Renfroe singled to left. Smith was looking to come up throwing, but took his eye of the ball, which went underneath his glove and allowed Machado to score and Renfroe to coast into second.

Later in the inning, Franmil Reyes doubled down the line to score Renfroe. Smith's throw back into the infield was well wide of its target and allowed Reyes to hustle to third, though he'd be stranded there to end the inning. It was Smith's second error or the inning.

Mets fall 7-2 to Padres 00:01:33
Only two Mets outside McNeil and Conforto had a hit in the 7-2 loss against the Padres. Noah Syndergaard allowed 3 earned runs in 7 innings.

The Mets jumped out to an early lead, but Noah Syndergaard was unable to hold it as the Mets fell to the Padres on Wednesday, 7-2. >> Box score

Four takeaways from Wednesday's game

1) Syndergaard was not as sharp as he would have liked, walking five batters (one intentionally) over seven innings pitched, the most he's issued in a start this season. He did finish the outing strong, however, holding the Padres scoreless over his final four innings. In total, the right-hander allowed four runs (three earned) and eight hits while striking out eight Padres hitters.

Not that there was any real doubt, but Robinson Cano's "I'm Not Done Yet" night at Citi Field on Tuesday was a pointed reminder the Mets will be trying to patch together and add to their flawed roster with the hope of trying to win again next season rather than rebuild.

Which raises an obvious question with the trade deadline a week away: what's the best way to improve for 2020?

Trading free agents-to-be Todd Frazier, Jason Vargas, and even Zack Wheeler won't bring back much in the way of difference-making talent for next season -- not with the way GMs hold tight to their best prospects these days, especially in deals for rental players.

Smith happy to produce in win 00:01:22
New York Mets first baseman Dom Smith was happy he was able to knock in 4 RBIs after committing a game-ending error the night before.

The key for Dominic Smith was keeping an even-keeled approach, he said following the Mets' 11-4 win over the San Francisco Giants on Saturday.

Smith was less than 24 hours removed from costing the Mets a gem of a game from pitcher Jacob deGrom.

Pablo Sandoval blooped a ball into shallow left field in the 10th inning and Smith miscommunicated with shortstop Amed Rosario on the play. The ball fell to the ground and the Giants' Alex Dickerson, hustling around the bases on the play, crossed home plate for the walk-off win.

Smith happy to produce in win 00:01:22
New York Mets first baseman Dom Smith was happy he was able to knock in 4 RBIs after committing a game-ending error the night before.

A day after a costly error in the outfield, Dom Smith's bat led the way for the Mets in an 11-4 win over the Giants. >> Box score

Five things to know about Saturday's game

1) Smith had a tough Friday evening in the outfield, but his fortunes have since changed drastically. After his costly error less than 24 hours earlier, Smith scored the first run of the game with a bomb of a solo home run, which went over the deepest part of Oracle Park, Triples Alley in right-center field. Smith then recorded his second RBI of the game on a single in the fourth inning. As the Mets were padding runs on late in the ninth inning, Smith added two more RBI, bringing his game total to four with a single.

2) Smith was in the game early because Pete Alonso was not. Skipper Mickey Callaway gave Alonso the day off and started Smith at first base, despite Alonso's wishes to play. It paid off with Smith's early performance, but Alonso, despite not starting due to his rare day off, still found a way to contribute. Coming off the bench in the sixth inning, Alonso hit a 444-foot, three-home homer. Alonso reached 75 RBI on the season with the shot, a team rookie record.

The Mets have struggled to score runs through the first two games of their series with the Giants, pushing just two runs across in 26 innings.

But as they look to get the offense going on Saturday, they'll do so without Pete Alonso.

Dominic Smith will get the start at first base on Saturday against Giants right-hander Jeff Samardzija, as Mickey Callaway looks to give his rookie first baseman a bit of a breather.

"I was talking to [Todd] Frazier the other day, just about his experience, and he said coming out of that Home Run Derby the year he did it, he was worn out. We kind of took it out of Pete's hands. We've got the righty going today, we've got the lefty tomorrow, give him a day and let him get after it tomorrow."

Mets lose in extras again 00:01:49
Mickey Callaway, Dominic Smith, Amed Rosario and Jacob deGrom on Smith's 10th inning error that led to the Mets 1-0 loss

For the second straight night in San Francisco, a pitchers' duel carried the ball game into extra innings. And while Friday's game didn't last 16 innings like the previous night, it ended in a loss just as deflating.

In the bottom of the 10th inning, with two runners on, Jacob Rhame forced a weak pop up to shallow left field off the bat of Pablo Sandoval. With Dominic Smith coming in and Amed Rosario drifting out, there was a brief moment of hesitation Smith's part, and just like that, the ball dropped to the grass and a hustling Alex Dickerson scored all the way from first base, handing the Mets a 1-0 loss

Smith was charged with an error on the game-ending play.

Mets suffer another tough loss 00:00:54
Jacob deGrom struck out 10 over 7 stellar innings of work but Dom Smith's error in the 10th dealt the Mets another heartbreaking loss, 1-0

The Mets wasted another gem from Jacob deGrom, and the game's only run scored on a Dominic Smith error as the Giants beat the Mets 1-0 in 10 innings. >> Box score

Five things to know about Friday's game

1) In the bottom of the ninth inning of a scoreless game, the Mets turned the ball to Jacob Rhame. Coming off of his one-game suspension, Rhame walked two batters in the inning, but with two away, Joe Panik struck out to send the game into extra innings. The Mets stuck with Rhame to start the 10th. After walking Alex Dickerson to start the inning, Pablo Sandoval blooped a ball to left, and after Amed Rosario and Dominic Smith had some miscommunication, the ball fell in for an error charged to Smith, allowing Dickerson to score the winning run all the way from first base.

2) Jacob deGrom dazzled through seven innings on Friday night. Though the Mets couldn't give him any run support, deGrom was as dominant as he's been all season, allowing just three hits while striking out 10. He allowed just one extra-base hit, a double to Kevin Pillar in the fifth. DeGrom was pulled after 108 pitches, 74 of which was strikes. He also passed Ron Darling for sixth place on the Mets' franchise strikeout list.
