Questions about wide receiver Stephen Hill's future with the Jets intensified Tuesday as Rex Ryan gave him less than a full endorsement. (Post, Aug. 26)

?He?s had some strong moments, but there are others where we wish maybe he had hung on to a ball or so,? Ryan said of Hill, a 2012 second-round pick by former general manager Mike Tannenbaum. ?But he?s had a pretty good training camp. I don?t want to say it?s been outstanding, but it?s been pretty good. . .He?s blocked consistently, but he just hasn?t had a lot of shots at catching the ball."

Hill, who the team said was too ill to speak to the media after practice Monday and Tuesday, has just two catches for 29 yards in the Jets' three preseason games. Earlier Tuesday, ESPN reported the Jets tried to trade Hill in the offseason.

Stephen Hill spoke with the press yesterday about the more limited reps he will be seeing this week against Baltimore according to JP Pelzman of the Bergen Record.

Hill acknowledged Wednesday that wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal told him the bad news.

Hill said Lal was "basically just straight up with me, that some things are going to be cut down. But I?m still going to get enough reps."

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. ? Jets rookie wide receiver Stephen Hill went straight to the sidelines after he came up lame on Sunday afternoon trying to chase down a deep ball from quarterback Mark Sanchez, never to step foot on the field for the rest of the Jets 23-20 overtime win in Miami.

On Monday, head coach Rex Ryan told the media that Hill was ?iffy? with a right hamstring injury, casting doubt on if the Jets will have a player who could be a red zone threat against the tough San Francisco defense. Hill spent Wednesday?s practice on the stationary bike and then working with the training staff on agility and stretching exercises.

?[The] hamstring is coming along but we?ll just get the final word from the coaches and the training staff later on,? Hill said.

It was good for the Jets to open the season with a dominating win. The Bills, despite Sunday's 48-28 loss, are a good measuring stick for where the Jets stand as they are just in the very start of their hunt for a postseason bid.

Here's some of what?occurred?to us in the aftermath of Week One:

1) ?Ground and pound ain't dead yet -- Don't despair at the notion that the Jets only gained 118 yards on 36 carries (a 3.3 YPC average) just yet. ?The Bills were selling out against the run much of the game and that left players like Stephen Hill in single coverage. ?Hill was able to get open in multiple ways, be it with his speed or physicality. ?Now starts the game of NFL cat-and-mouse. ?Teams will start to dial back the eight-in-the-box stuff and that will only help the Jets running game benefit from the softer defensive front they'll see.

Rookie receiver Stephen Hill looked pretty good in his first regular season game scoring two touchdowns on five catches. ?As I thought about the rookie and his performance, I couldn't remember one as memorable since a certain Viking back in 1998. ?Rich Cimini wrote that there have been few performances by rookies like Hill had in his fist game, and noted a few other players who had similar stats as Hill put up yesterday for the Jets.

Cimini also wrote that Hill was sick as a dog during the game.
