Yesterday, in the NY Post, Larry Brooks noted that the Rangers acquisition of Justin Falk and signing of Aaron Johnson spelled the end of Roman Hamrlik, Matt Gilroy and Steve Eminger's time with the Rangers.

Hamrlik was claimed off of waivers by the Rangers on March 6 and played 12 regular season games for the Rangers and two playoff games.

Eminger has played three seasons for the Rangers and signed one-year contracts with them the last two summers. He played in 35 regular season games and 11 playoff games.

Following a shake first 7-10 minutes against the Capitals yesterday, the Rangers took control of the game, tied it up and pulled off a 4-1 win.

In the post game, John Tortorella described what woke the Rangers up and how they were then able to execute, "Cally has a big hit. Emmy has a big hit. Haley has a big hit. I think it woke us up. From that point on, I thought we were good all the way through. We held them to 11 scoring chances and that counts the 5 on 3 but we really grinded and did our work on the walls. I think we are beginning to sort our selves out in how we have to play and doing it more consistently."

The Rangers have called up Steve Eminger, via the AHL Transaction wire, from his conditioning stint in Hartford.

This is likely a move related to Michael Del Zotto who missed the last part of the third period and OT last night.

Eminger has played in four games for the Whale. Has one goal, nine shots on goal and is a minus three. He told Bob Crawford of the Whale, earlier in the week, that he was playing in all situations.

Prior to separating his shoulder last December, Steve Eminger was averaging over 13 minutes a night on defense for the Rangers.

Eminger told the Rangers Website that he was happy with his play until he hurt his shoulder and followed that up with a sprained ankle that kept him out until the playoffs, "Things were going pretty well and I was feeling well playing top four, top five minutes and the injury hit and being out for two months and coming back at that part of the season was pretty tough. You do lose a bit of it and just as I was getting back into it I sprained my ankle and that was tough and then coming back in the playoffs was going to be a big challenge."

Eminger added that following all the injures, "It was tough to be in game shape" but that heading into this season he feels good and has been skating for most of the summer.

?I know I?ll be back, it?s a matter of time. I?m not a negative person. I?m not going to sit around all day and mope because of my shoulder. I?ll be with the team, I?ll come to the rink, I?ll be happy. I?ll just be normal.?

According to Pat Leonard of the Daily News, Steve Eminger will be out 8-10 weeks due to a separated shoulder suffered on Saturday night against Phoenix.

The Rangers didn't have a lot of depth on defense to begin with and now are without three of their top six defensemen for at least a month, with Marc Staal being the closest to coming back and he isn't even that close yet. A lot will fall on Anton Stralman and Jeff Woywitka, if healthy, otherwise Tim Erixon gets another chance to show what kind of talent he has.

A lot will fall on the forwards to continue to backcheck and work in the defensive zone. There is inexperience and players that John Tortorella may not entirely trust about to play big or bigger minutes.

While John Tortorella told the Daily News that he wasn't sure about the defense pairs, it is assumed that Steve Eminger will step up to either play with Michael Del Zotto or with either Ryan McDonagh or Dan Girardi.

Eminger told Newsday that his game won't change with an expanded role:

"I feel ready. I'm not going to do anything different because I might play more minutes. It's not a case of that. I'm just going to play the same way.''

If it ends up that I'm a fifth or sixth or seventh defenseman, then so be it, but I am trying to set myself up in as good a spot as possible. I am not just accepting the same role as last year. I am coming in to compete.

Blueshirts United

In the NY Post, Larry Brooks writes that Eminger could be the front-runner for the fifth defense spot with either Tim Erixon, Michael Del Zotto or a "defenseman who will make an impact at camp."

Emmy won't crack the top four, but he should still have the mindset of trying to get into one of those spots. He averaged close to 16 minutes a game last season and should be helped this season that both players that he is really contending with, Erixon and Del Zotto, are both lefty shots while he is a righty shot. He played on the left side last season and was okay, but will be a lot better if he can play on his natural side this season.

...I was a little surprised by this last night but I think it was just a one game thing. Eminger has exceeded expectations by miles this season and shouldn't lose his spot in the lineup. It's the same situation with Del Zotto that it has been for a while, he isn't better than any of the six ahead of him but still possesses the most offensive talent of any of the Rangers defenseman. We will see what the Rangers do on Thursday but I think Del Zotto will be scratched and then sent down to play in Hartford as the Whale schedule resumes.

On another note, Ryan McDonagh has been great in his time since being called up.

...I don't know how long Eminger will play as well as he has, but let the good times roll with that. I am surprised at the level he play he is at, and it is a good surprise, especially with the amount of minutes he has played since Michal Rozsival has been out. He isn't any long-term player with the Rangers, but he has far exceeded expectations.

Of the nearly 20 minutes that Eminger played, over 17 of them were at even strength. He played 48 seconds on the powerplay and 1:30 on the powerplay.

...He hasn't been as bad as he was early in the season where I would guess he was most likely still dealing with his training camp injuries. He has been solid, he will make his mistakes but he will also play a more physical game which the Rangers need. Most people still don't like him, I am not crazy about him, but he does deserve credit for his play over the last couple of weeks.

At TSN, Scott Cullen has been looking at many recent off-season moves, and took a look at the Rangers' swap from a week ago of Aaron Voros and Ryan Hillier for Steve Eminger.

With the Rangers, Eminger is a prime insurance policy.? If the Rangers can't come to an agreement with restricted free agent Marc?Staal (a worst-case scenario), decide to bury Wade?Redden in the minors or merely want competition for Matt?Gilroy, Eminger is capable of filling a variety of roles on the Rangers' blueline.
...Cullen really nailed this one.

Eminger had 102 hits and 99 blocked shots last season in Anaheim, and averaged 19:28 of ice time per game.

"He's going to push guys, and it's important to have that push," said Rangers associate coach Mike Sullivan, who also coached Eminger with Tampa Bay. "That's going to force a competitive situation on our blue line that will be good for all of us."
Rangers assistant coach Mike Sullivan telling Arthur Staple of Newsday what kind of role Steve Eminger will play next season.

...Eminger looks like a depth move and one that will do what Sullivan says. He is an NHL player, maybe not a great one, but still an NHL player, and will be on call whenever a defenseman struggles. Remember, it's all a competition to make the team, and while Eminger probably will in some capacity, he could also beat out a player for a spot. There is nothing wrong with depth; depth means options and shaking things up if they aren't working.

This is a move that has to motivate Wade Redden. It's a move that shows they are adding capable defensemen and won't stand for bad play from players. Of course, they need to follow through with sending Redden downor benching him again when/if he struggles, but with Eminger they now have someone they can probably feel comfortable with.

Update:6:09PM:

More on Eminger from the Orange County Register:

Eminger was scratched 18 times in all and finished with four goals and 12 assists in 63 games. The seven-year veteran had a plus-1 rating, but that didn?t indicate the times he was often pushed around in his end and forced into making mistakes under pressure.
....Yeah, well, Aaron Voros can't take two strides without falling, taking a penalty or trying to hit someone away from the play. Then again, Voros is loved in the locker room, or at least by Sean Avery and Henrik Lundqvist.
