The news yesterday that S Stevie Brown is out for the season after tearing the ACL in his left knee on Saturday night has left a pall over the Giants.

"We had the bad injury last night to Stevie," Tom Coughlin said on a conference call yesterday. "A nice interception, something he has done extremely well, running the ball back after the interception and I don?t believe it was a contact issue. It was just something that happened. I feel badly for him. He?s worked hard. He?s prepared himself well and been in a position where he?s made a lot of plays for us. We will definitely miss him. We continue, that?s what we do."

So, what is the immediate plan to fill Brown's spot? Outside of getting Antrel Rolle (ankle) back on the field and sliding Ryan Mundy over, the Giants have few options but to trawl their roster for solutions.

According to several sources, Giants' safety Stevie Brown could possibly have a torn ACL after twisting his left knee returning a Geno Smith INT in last night's game vs the Jets. The injury would effectively end his season.

"I feel bad for Stevie Brown. He?s been a tremendous addition to our team," said Tom Coughlin after the game. "The guy has another interception and then has that happen. I don?t really understand how it happened. I couldn?t see it, but evidently he just got his foot planted the wrong way. I don?t think it was a contact injury."

[sny-box]"I didn?t have to do interviews with this many cameras. I just got to eat lunch and go back, but it?s definitely a little bit different. Coaches talk to you in a different way. Players talk to you in a different way. It?s not about keeping it going, keeping your head focused and see if you can try to make this team. Now it?s like we?re going to need things from you this year and expect things from you." - Safety Stevie Brown on the difference between this year and last.[/sny-box]

In one year, Stevie Brown has gone from roster hopeful to burgeoning star. Expectations are a bit higher this time around.

"There are always going to be questions every single year," said Brown. "Until you get established or someone does it year in and year out, you?re always going to have questions if you?re going to just be a one-year guy. So I believe every single year you always have to go out there and prove yourself."

When you hear the name Stevie Brown, what comes to mind? Interceptions and record-setting runbacks, of course. Well, there's more to him than that, but Giant fans hope that Brown can repeat his penchant for big plays on defense this season.

Brown was a pleasant surprise for the Giants in 2012, starting 11 games at safety in place of the ailing Kenny Phillips. His 76 tackles, two forced fumbles. two fumble recoveries and eight INTs and an NFL-high 307 return yards were enough for the Giants to slap a second-round tender worth $2.023 million on Brown this spring. The eight INTs, by the way, are the most by a Giant since 1968, when Willie Williams racked up 10 and Spider Lockhart had eight.

Before signing with the Giants before the 2012 season, Brown had not created nor capitalized on a single turnover in his 23 games with the Raiders and Colts. That's ancient history to him, now. He is brimming with confidence these days.

The Giants "have just put their toe in the water again" for Charles Woodson, the veteran defensive back agent's tells ESPN's Josina Anderson.

Two days ago, Woodson left his visit with Denver without receiving a contract offer, but the two sides reportedly remained in contact.

In addition to the Broncos, Woodson, 36, has visited with the Raiders, the only team known to have made an offer to the free agent.

It is only speculation that Mathias Kiwanuka will play along the Giants defensive line, according to Giants.com, though general manager Jerry Reese did hint at the move prior to the NFL Draft last month.

"He will probably play more on the defensive line" this year," the GM said.

With the shakeup along the defensive line this off-season -- losing Osi Umenyiora to the Falcons -- Kiwanuka can serve as another pass rusher to complement Jason Pierre-Paul and Justin Tuck, who will line up at numerous positions up front.

The Giants placed 2nd-round tenders on S Stevie Brown and RB Andre Brown today, making sure they stay Giants for at least one more season. RB Ryan Torain was not tendered, making him eligible to become a UFA tomorrow at 4pm.

From our partners at Rotoworld:

Stevie Brown, who played linebacker at Michigan, was a revelation in place of injured Kenny Phillips last season, recording 76 tackles, eight interceptions, and two forced fumbles across 16 games, starting 11. Phillips is a free agent and unlikely to return, making Brown the obvious candidate to replace him full time. He will be paid approx $2.02 million this season.

During his book release earlier today, Giants head coach Tom Coughlin used the story of one of his players to demonstrate some of the learning points.

What unit stood out last year as the one that needs the most improvement this offseason? It was the Giants? secondary, right?

Countless times, the Giants gave up huge plays in the secondary, especially on third down, which kept the opposing offense on the field.

Big Blue was near the top of the league in giving up passing plays of more than 20 yards. Stevie Brown had a breakout season, but that was pretty much all the positive recognition this unit received.

This season, the Giants lacked their signature pass rush, which had lifted them over the Patriots in Super Bowls twice and had set the tone for the rest of their defense.

Whether it's via free agency, the draft or trades, the Giants need to upgrade their pass rush, which will allow their linebackers to focus more on stopping the revent and their defensive backs on generating turnovers.

The heart and soul of the Giants D: the defensive line. Let's begin there.

Giants? secondary coach Peter Giunta addressed the media Tuesday to discuss the secondary?s performance from this past weekend?s game against the Bengals.

The obvious area of emphasis was the very first drive in which the Giants allowed Andy Dalton to hit A.J. Green on 56-yard touchdown pass in which the secondary looked completely confused.

Stevie Brown was supposed to slide over in coverage, but Corey Webster should have realized, according to Giunta, what was going on as the veteran guy.

Giants safety Stevie Brown was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Year following his team's 29-24 victory over the Cowboys Sunday.

Brown and fellow defensive backfield mate Antrel Rolle have both been honored in the past three weeks.

Brown intercepted Cowboys quarterback twice, moving his season total to five. He also recovered a fumble and led the Giants in tackles with six.

Quarterback Alex Smith of the San Francisco 49ers, safety Stevie Brown of the New York Giants and cornerback Davon House of the Green Bay Packers are the NFC Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for games played the eighth week of the 2012 season (October 25, 28-29), the NFL announced today.

DEFENSE: S Stevie Brown, New York Giants

  • Brown had two interceptions, recovered a fumble and had six tackles in the Giants? 29-24 win at Dallas.
  • He is only the third Giant to record at least three takeaways in a game against the Cowboys, joining WILLIE Williams (1969) and Terry Kinard, who did it twice (1983 and 1987).
  • Brown?s three takeaways accounted for half of the six turnovers forced by the New York defense as the Giants recorded four interceptions and recovered two fumbles.
  • Two of Brown?s takeaways led to scoring drives for the Giants and his third was an interception inside the red zone with 1:03 remaining in the game and the Giants up by five points.
  • Brown has an interception in four of the past six games (five interceptions). His five interceptions are already the most in a season by a Giants safety since 1999 (Percy Ellsworth, 6).
  • Brown?s 168 interception-return yards are the most by a Giant since Dick Lynch in 1963 (251).
  • In his third year from Michigan, this is Brown?s first career Player of the Week Award.
  • He is the second Giants safety to be honored this season, joining Antrel Rolle (Week 6). Previously, no Giants safety had won the award since 1998 (Percy Ellsworth, Week 16).
  • This is the first time in franchise history two Giants safeties have been named Defensive Player of the Week in the same season.

When a team scores one offensive touchdown, it usually loses. But the Giants relied on five field goals from Lawrence Tynes and a Jason Pierre-Paul interception return for a touchdown to barely hang on in their 29-24 victory against the Cowboys.

For most of the game, the Giants had a weak rushing attack, and Eli Manning was not his traditional self in Cowboys Stadium.

After the 56-yard Rueben Randle catch on the opening drive, it almost seemed as if the Giants would just steam roll the Cowboys, playing without middle linebacker Sean Lee. But that drive only yielded a field goal.

It went down to the final second, but the Giants somehow hung on for a 29-24 victory after leading this game 23-0.

The defense collectively had a rough day, as they allowed Tony Romo to make big plays all over the field, throwing for 437 yards. Three Dallas receivers ? Miles Austin, Jason Witten and Dez Bryant ? each had over 100 yards receiving on the day.

But Stevie Brown?s effort helped the Giants preserve the victory. Brown picked off two passes and recovered a fumble. He?s now second in the NFL in interceptions with five.

Stevie Brown had filled in more than adequately for Kenny Phillips, who is nursing a sprained MCL. Brown is tied for the team lead in interceptions with 3, and has helped solidify the secondary as Antrel Rolle and Corey Webster continue to play through lingering injuries.

Given Brown's performance, does he deserve to retain the job even when Phillips is healthy?

Last year, in Phillips' fourth year he put together his best season. He had 82 tackles, four INTs, 11 passes defended, a forced fumble and a safety. And in three full games in 2012, he had 15 tackles and one pass defended.

Giants defensive coordinator held his weekly press conference today, answering a wide range of questions from this week's game plan to progress reports on his unit.

When asked about how he plans to attack Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, who shredded Big Blue for more than 300 yards and 3 TDs in the season opener, Fewell said there's not much you could do about "classic Tony."

"I just think he had a really good game against us in the first ball game.? He made some plays with his feet, which is classic Tony, and stayed alive.? I thought he and Dez (Bryant) hooked up and did a good job, and he brought (Kevin) Ogletree in the game and he did a good job against us.? I think that they had a good plan and they executed their plan better than we played."
Fewell said this time around, the secondary has made tremendous strides. Corey Webster and Antrel Rolle are getting healthier, as his Kenny Phillips. In his place, Stevie Brown has collected a team-high 3 INTs.

The defensive backs will continue to incorporate more press coverage into their repertoire, which has proven to be a solid method of late.
