Alain Vigneault noted last night that the Rangers have one decision to make on defense and it is who will be the seventh defenseman.

As noted by the NY Post and Newsday, the battle is between Justin Falk and Stu Bickel while Conor Allen will be sent to Hartford on Sunday.

Bickel and Falk are both on one-year, one-way deals. Bickel is at $750,000 while Falk is at $975,000 and would cost a $50,000 cap charge if he was sent to Hartford since his salary is above $925,000.

Before the Rangers loss to Ottawa, as Kenny Albert and John Giannone noted last night, Stu Bickel had only been on the ice for six goals against all season and not in the 16 games preceding it.

After a stretch from January 14th to February 24th where Bickel played under ten minutes in every game, he has played at least 11:35 in six of the last seven games and over 17 in two of the last three.

Earlier this week John Tortorella told Ranger Rants,"He?s a real interesting one to us, because he continues to simplify his game and his game becomes better when he becomes more simple. The minutes he got he deserved. He had some struggles with some other guys along the way. He brings an element of willingness when you need to have it. There are some big-time warts on him sometimes. But he has slowly understood trying to play within himself and his game has improved as a result of that.?

"I don't want to play GM here. You have to be real careful as far as Marc with IR. This is the type of injury with Marc that he could feel real good in another day or two and we get him going right away. It's been such a touch and go thing with Marc, that we just didn't go that way. We felt we wanted to get to our number this way."

All this really means is that they can be sent down in the next 30 days without having to pass through waivers again. It gives them options if/when Michael Sauer and Marc Staal are ready to come back.
